Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
At Pearson Canada, we are dedicated to fighting systemic racism and creating bias-free content that reflects the diversity of K-12 learners in Canada. That work includes developing diversity, equity, and inclusion plans for our titles, guided by Pearson’s Editorial Policy, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and relevant Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action.
We have worked with 2 independent reviewers, Elaine Su and Eileen Marthiensen to assess all the titles currently available in Spark Reading specifically through a DE&I and Indigenous content lens. Their review was completed in late 2022. Based on the review, our literacy publishing team is creating an action plan to address their findings and recommendations. Thus far, we removed 3 titles from Spark Reading.
Pearson Canada hired professional Canadian actors to record an audio version of each book, thereby creating a unique feature in Spark Reading. When the author or protagonist was either Indigenous or from a particular cultural background, Pearson Canada engaged an Indigenous or culturally appropriate actor.
We encourage you to add your voice to our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts by reporting issues and concerns about Pearson content to your local representative or through our Report Bias Portal at pearson.com/report-bias.html Together we can create impactful changes.
