Big Ideas in Religious Education is designed as a teacher/catechist professional learning supplement to Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ, the Religious Education program of the Catholic Bishops of Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories. The program is based on the Catholic Elementary Curriculum Policy Document for Religious Education, Grades 1–8.
Dr. Josephine Lombardi, the Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ Series Theologian, facilitates five online modules that explore these Big Ideas in Religious Education:
The purpose of these learning modules is to increase teacher comfort and knowledge in delivering the Religious Education curriculum. The modules are also valuable adult faith-formation resources for anyone involved in Religious Education or catechesis in a school or parish setting. Each module contains background information, classroom videos, interviews, activities, opportunities for reflection, prayers, and links to related resources.
Accompanying each module is an ejournal that summarizes key information for participants, gives resources for delving deeper, and provides opportunities to record reflections. Participants download the ejournal to their computer to create a personal record of their learning. A comprehensive facilitator’s guide for each module provides suggested delivery plans and a wealth of additional resources to extend participants’ knowledge. Authored by Les Miller, an experienced adult educator and former coordinator and consultant at one of Ontario’s largest Catholic school boards, these guides exemplify best practice in collaborative inquiry.
