Ready, Set, Sow is an expository nonfiction text, with procedural language throughout, explains how an urban garden brings people together to grow fresh vegetables that can be enjoyed and shared with the whole community. The text uses language that speaks directly to the reader and the content is interesting and relevant. An activity at the end of the book invites students to think beyond the text.
Ready, Set, Sow is divided into four short chapters. Illustrations, such as photos and diagrams are used to convey information. A Planting Guide Index at the end of the book shows students how and when to plant 16 different vegetables and when to pick them. Punctuation includes periods, commas, quotation marks, question marks, and exclamation marks. Fact/tip boxes provide students with additional learning opportunities. A table of contents and a glossary support the reader.
The book contains many multi-syllable words with some vocabulary of mature language users. Verbs with inflectional endings, a range of plurals, possessives, and sentences with variation in placement of subject, verb, adjectives, and adverbs are used in the text. Compound words, conjunctions, and subordinate clauses are included. Common connectives are used throughout the text.
