Bug Club Phonics Decodable Readers 

The Bug Club Phonics Decodable Readers are organized into 27 sets with each set focusing on particular grapheme-phoneme correspondences. Simpler, more common patterns are addressed first and more complex, less frequent patterns are addressed when easier skills are mastered.

There are 131 decodable books (70 fiction and 61 non-fiction) currently available in Spark Reading. The decodable books do not have audio versions or comprehension activities.

How to get started with Bug Club Phonics in Spark Reading

  • Inside Spark, look for the filter called “Decodable Books”
  • Click on the filter to look at the scope and sequence
  • Select the set that aligns with the phoneme/grapheme you are currently teaching
  • Select a book for whole class instruction or individual student reading and practice

Designed to support teachers who want to bring intention to their phonics instruction, The Phonics Companion includes 120 templated lessons and 30 suggested regular reviews. Every lesson has a consolidating section at the end where it links to a Bug Club Phonics decodable reader that could be used during the lessons. For those lessons without a link to a Bug Club Phonics reader there is a suggested sentence/passage for student practice. An accompanying website includes customizable teacher tools and line masters that can be shared digitally or printed. 

The Phonics Companion is based on a scope and sequence that has been field-tested in a range of primary classrooms and offers an easy-to-implement phonics solution.
