Action!

In Action!, students will get the chance to look behind the scenes of the film industry, learning more about First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people who make movies both in front of and behind the camera. Students will also be able to see whether they have the skills it takes to be part of the exciting industry themselves. 

There for You

The selections in There For You allow students to explore relationships among friends, family members, and people in their own communities. Students will DRA: w comparisons between the selections they find in There For You and relationships and experiences from their own lives.

Marvelous Machines

In Marvellous Machines, students will climb onboard a Globemaster III with Captain Kevin Big Canoe, rescue an injured hiker on an ATV, and see what happens when a robot won’t stop talking. Each selection invites students to learn more about some of the world’s most marvellous machines.

Protecting the Planet

Students will feel like active participants in caring for the environment as they read Protecting the Planet. They’ll learn about what some young people are doing to fight global warming and other environmental problems, while, at the same time, realizing what they to make a difference.

Grade 8+

In Tune

Aboriginal peoples have been making music, from traditional drum dances to modern hip-hop beats, for thousands of years. Today, many people are making music behind the scenes, too. Students will be able to see whether they have the skills needed to work as a music producer, songwriter, or promoter. Students will also learn about some musical instruments they’ve never heard about before. 

Media Matters

Students hear the word media all the time, but what exactly are media and why do they matter? In Media Matters, students will read about emerging technologies, how advertisers target consumers, and about how Aboriginal peoples used to communicate in the past. 

Making Choices

From what they’re going to eat to what they’re going to wear, students make dozens of choices every day. This book look at the many decisions young people have to make, including what to do after high school and how to deal with peer pressure.

Our Voices

Our Voices looks at the traditional ways in which Aboriginal peoples used their voices, how some had their voices taken away, and how some are using their voices today. Students will read a poem by Métis spoken-word artist Tiffany Harrington, an interview with a residential school survivor, and learn about the many people who are working to preserve Aboriginal languages by passing them on to future generations.
