While the current editions of LLI K-2 have had wonderful results in helping teachers to impact the literacy of struggling readers, as with everything, there is always room for improvement.
Fountas and Pinnell have revisited LLI for the primary grades to incorporate enhancements that can make them even more effective.
LLI Orange and Green systems will now include the titles previously contained in the booster packs, extending the range.
NB: The books themselves have not changed.
The principles in each section are taken directly from the NEW Comprehensive Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study Guide. There are now five new Instructional Procedures for Phonics/Word Study, and a different procedure is used in each lesson to teach the principle in that lesson.
The Goals on the first page of the lessons are now categorized to help the teacher know what to look for during observation while administering each part of the lesson. There are specific goals for each section. The assessment section on the back page more closely aligns with these goals.
The Text Analysis section on the bottom of the first page of each lesson now aligns to The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, Expanded Edition.
More emphasis on encouraging the children to give specific examples from the text during discussion.
More attention to genre during discussion focusing on identifying characteristics of fiction and nonfiction texts. You’ll also see the addition of the Thinking Within, Beyond, and About chart, which also appears in the upper-grade systems. This is meant to show the key understandings the children should be picking up on as they discuss the book. There is also now a Message (or Big Idea) for each book.
All of the Comprehension Conversations in Part Two of the Recording Forms have been revised to match the parameters of the new rubric, which is described in the revised System Guide for each color.
The revised Comprehension Conversations now feature a more rigourous scoring component. You’ll notice that there are more Key Understandings accompanying each prompt within, beyond, and about the text.
By August 2018 - PREk-3 will be available for full implementation - grades 4-6 to follow in 2019.
