New Math Resource Supports Three-Part Lesson Model

Working with teachers and educators we’ve developed Mathology, a practical approach to using the 3-part lesson model your classroom. It includes tools and resources designed to maximize time for teaching while giving you time to observe, differentiate, consolidate learning, and assess.
All Mathology components are structured using the same lesson model, which was developed in collaboration with teachers, educators, and researchers across Canada, reflecting the most current research and practice in teaching and learning mathematics.
Throughout the model, an active focus on observing and conferring with students enables teachers to gain insight into students’ thinking and understanding at all times.
These practical tools are ready for teachers to use exactly when they need them.
Here’s a quick look at how the approach we’ve developed makes implementing each step of the 3-part lesson model more practical for teachers.
Step one: Activating Learning
Before you launch into your math lesson, research shows engaging students through a related story or a large group activity helps prepare them for learning.
But researching high quality activities that help teachers meet individual student needs takes time. The Pearson Mathology Little Books and Activity Kit give you quick access to an engaging provocation, problem, story, conversation, or task you can use with the whole class or in small group settings, so you can engage students and activate the thinking needed to build the new learning.
Step two: Constructing Knowledge
With Mathology you can choose rich activities or stories from the Mathology Little Books or Activity Kit that are accessible to all students, allowing them to develop new knowledge and skills. And the resources work with whole group settings, small groups, individuals, or even in learning centres.
Step three: Consolidating Learning
With Mathology you can make learning visible using student work to highlight big ideas, make connections, share strategies, and address misconceptions. You can also find additional practice and real-world applications that help reinforce and develop mastery of related skills and understandings at pearsonmathology.ca.
Support throughout the learning process
Along with following the steps of the 3-part lesson model, it’s important to observe and document student progress throughout the process. Mathology helps you do this with conversation prompts that guide you in what to watch for and look for when assessing students. The resource also helps you identify next steps to support student learning.
Mini lessons are another great tool that you can use at any point in the process to quickly revisit concepts, build fluency, or practice skills.
