Terry Fox Day
Terry Fox is known around the world for his accomplishments, but to Canadians he's something of a national hero. Terry lost his right leg to bone cancer in 1977 at only 18 years old. He wanted to do something to help the many Canadians who suffer from this disease, so he set out to raise money for cancer research by running across the country as part of his “Marathon of Hope.” Sadly, after running for 143 days and over 5,000 km, Terry had to stop his marathon when the cancer spread to his lungs. He died on June 28th, 1981, at the age of 22.
Every September, Terry’s legacy lives on as people young and old gather across Canada for the Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research. Visit the Terry Fox Foundation to join a run or learn about more ways to get involved.
Visit our website for ways to bring Terry’s legacy into the classroom.
Note that the date of Terry Fox Day varies regionally. British Columbia and Ontario celebrate it on the second Sunday of September, Manitoba on the first Monday of August. The national date for the Terry Fox Run is usually the second Sunday of September.
Tips to Get Organized for a New School Year
- Declutter and organize your classroom: Clear out old materials, organize supplies, and create a functional layout for your classroom. Label storage bins and shelves so they are easy for you and your students to access.
Create a welcome package: Prepare a package of documents for students and parents that includes important information such as class rules, contact information, and a syllabus overview. This helps set clear expectations from the start and creates a spirit of collaboration between you, your students, and their parents.
Give students something to look forward to: Create your own spirit days, gamify your lessons, award students for their accomplishments. This is a great way to keep students involved and invested in their own learning. A special days calendar is a great way to get students excited about learning in unique ways.
Create a routine: Establish daily and weekly routines for yourself and your students. Consistency helps manage time effectively and creates a familiar environment for your students.
Stay connected with colleagues: Collaborate with fellow teachers to share resources, ideas, and lean on each other for support. Who better to learn from than other teachers?
Stay up to date on current resources and research: Stay updated on new implementation strategies, technologies, and trends in education. This can enhance your teaching practices and keep you motivated and inspired.
Start the school year feeling confident and excited about connecting with students and setting them on a path for success.
