Earth is an expository nonfiction text that explains the solar system, planet Earth, seasons, day and night, and taking care of our Earth. The back of the book includes a paragraph on one of today’s scientists. Readers gain information from text and graphics. A two-page experiment written in third-person procedural language invites students to learn about day and night using a Styrofoam ball, pushpin, pencil, and flashlight.
Earth is divided into sections. Illustrations, such as some labeled photos, diagrams, and a pie chart, enhance the readers understanding of the information. Fact boxes appear throughout the text to provide students with additional learning opportunities. Periods, commas, question marks, quotations marks, and exclamation marks are used. A table of contents, glossary, and an index support the reader.
Simple plurals using –s, and verbs with the –s, -ed and –ing inflectional endings are used in the text. Some sentences contain adjectives, adverbs, simple connectives, and compound words. Glossary words are bold faced throughout the text.
