You and Your Name is an expository nonfiction text that explains how our names are chosen just for us, tell people who we are, and that every name has a special meaning. Clear, simple ideas are easy to identify and understand with language that speaks directly to the reader. The text includes an activity for students to make a family crest or shield with their last name and symbols that depict what their family is like. An activity at the end of the book invites students to think beyond the text.
Illustrations enhance the enjoyment of the book, but are not necessary for understanding. Punctuation includes periods, commas, question marks, exclamation marks, and quotation marks. A speech bubble is used to signify dialogue. A table of contents supports the reader.
The book contains one-, two-, three-, and four-syllable words with some picture support. Verbs with inflectional ending of –ed and –ing, a range of plurals, possessives, and sentences with variation in placement of subject, verb, adjectives, and adverbs are used in the text. Compound words are included and some sentences have subordinate clauses and conjunctions. Content words are bold face and some words appear in the vocabulary of mature language users.
This title is part of Our Catholic Community, a series that provides opportunities for students to read, write, talk about, and reflect on their faith.
