we'll just kind of flip back and forth and do it bilingual how about that so what words do you think your students might use to describe sharing in these images you can go ahead in the chat what words might your students use to describe sharing half a cake half sharing yep fair fold in two so we'll look at a few so folding counting visualizing measuring cutting fair sharing and dividing so just some of the words and some of the images from that little book and everything is really based around the learning progression and the learning progression was created at the university of alberta by dr linda garvey and it's going to show you um sorry um it's a step-by-step look at all the stages of knowledge and um all the construction that our learners are going to go through as they develop confidence in math so it's going to have big ideas it's going to have conceptual threads and it's going to have indicators and so if we look at this one here so this is number so you can see in the right at the top number it's got that big idea right up there that uh quantities and numbers can be regrouped by units or separated into units and then all along we've got different conceptual threads and indicators and so today we are going to be looking at separating quantities to make fractions and you can see those indicators and they start over on the left with kindergarten and they work all the way through to grade three and this continuum really allows us to see where our students are and what their next steps are or maybe if we need to go back and work a little bit more with our students so do you ever see students do this and so this is something i see a lot in grade one when we start talking about sharing and we start talking about you know the early stages of fractional thinking and this is the beginning of that learning continuum where we're you know splitting something and looking at it like which piece would you want and so we know we split it we know that it's half ish and in grade one every fraction is half for my students anytime we split everything anything it's half but we're starting to see visually that we're splitting things and is it fair and does it look right and as we continue along that continuum Splitting Fractions we're seeing that then we go from that visualizing to actually splitting things and so there's different activities and different little books that we can work through in mythology and in mythology to practice these uh the splitting and the sharing and the um fair sharing and the equitable pieces and we can really work with both in class and virtually with manipulatives to have our students really feel it and play with it so we can see that we've got the recording sheet so that's one of the black line masters that we can be used we've got those color tiles that's one of the virtual tools that i'm going to show you once we get into mathology.ca and that's accessible to your students and there's just lots of ways that we can give our students concrete materials ways that we can put things together and then we can use those virtual tools as well so i'm going to give you about 30 seconds here to think about these materials and how might they help your students to explore equal sharing maybe throw a couple ideas into the chat if you have these materials how might they help your students explore equal sharing holding yeah paper folding cutting yep cutting rolling and cutting the dough non-standard measuring equal parts with the string measuring building with play-doh partitioning weighing so i was thinking when i saw this string folding it in half and finding the two pieces there we can see that paper folded up so again as we continue along that continuum we're seeing the next step for our students would be separating holes into equal parts and starting to name those fractions so when we're looking at this our students have moved from everything being half no matter what its size is so what kind of fractional names could your students give so maybe we're talking uh half or we're talking a quarter or we're talking a third as we split up these pieces so maybe taking the plasticine and breaking it into two separate pieces or four separate pieces and talking about what those fractional names are and so this is one of the teachers cards and they look exactly the same in french and english if you've got the activity kit this is what it looks like and i will show you in ca what it looks like with the online version but what do you think could help you if you're looking at this image of this teacher's card what do you see there that could help you in working with your students and i know if you don't speak french it's not super easy right off the bat but if you've got any ideas go ahead and throw them into the chat probing questions in blue yeah love those probing questions uh we've got the steps to follow as we're working through that activity the time in the format for the lesson yeah we've got some things so in green it says astilve which are some things that you're going to want to look for as your students are working through those activities you've got the ideas to differentiate right on the card and on the back of the card you've got the behaviors and the strategies that you could see with your students as well as their next steps so all of those things can help you as you're working through the activity seeing different things that your students are doing being able to identify those things and looking at what the next steps would be for your students folding paper how does folding paper help our students to compare so folding paper like with all of our students and even those who typically struggle with math everyone can fold everyone can fold paper and folding helps us make predictions about the outcomes of a series of folds it helps us to refer to the paper to articulate reasoning and opening it up allows us to test what our theories are and you can see this one here has actually got everything written out names so we've got eight so we've got quarters we've got halfs and we've just moved hands-on instant results yep uh we've moved a little further along the continuing that that we're pulling in that the size of things and the measurements of things to get those equal parts and seeing that all those equal parts come together to make the whole and there is our paper folding right there um and cindy's on there and that's just a little heads up that we do have mathology on social media we'll talk about it a bit later but we are on twitter and on facebook and it's a great place for teachers to come together and share ideas of how they're using mathology so if you saw this what would you say this student knows about fractions what does this reveal about student thinking we can see that we've moved a little further along that continuum we're seeing an understanding of equivalent fractions yeah we're seeing the visual we're just continuing again to move along that learning progression and for this particular activity we can look at the back of that teacher card and we can see where our student is and we can see their next steps super visual as well as using materials concrete materials being able to represent with pictures and with symbols so just one example of some of the resources and some of the activities and the little books and the activity cards and all the resources that come together in mathology to work along a learning progression continuum so to work along one indicator so some of the things that we've seen and all of the components come together so we talked a lot about the learning progression the other components of mathology are the professional learning resources so all of the research that has come together there are short professional learning videos in mathology.ca there are resources for students and for the classroom so the activity cards are available in hard copy and printed resource as well as on mathology.ca there are 72 little books from k to 3. there are the new math mats which allow us to they're dry erase that allow us to see our students thinking and everything comes together on mathology.ca helps us to search to plan to teach it helps us to do our assessment and our follow-up and our next steps as well as some professional learning so we are going to go into mathology.ca Using Mathologie now and i'll give you a little tour of that so hopefully my screen has shared and you're over there now and you can see that this is the home screen so all i've done at this point is put in my username and password and there are several ways that we can search through mathology.ca and the easiest way to do it is just to type in a keyword kind of like we do a google search and you can see that i've got 102 results when i look up fractions so for me that's a lot all the little books getting into activity cards getting in all the way down so i'm going to refine this search so the first thing i'm going to do is go by grade so let's look at what we can find for grade two you can see that now down to 21 results you can see so if you are working with the english version so i've got lemaya but the best birthday is the same book but in english i can go into my dimension suits so if i want to go into number if i want to go into patterning to measurement to geometry i can go into type so i can have an activity card i can have some consolidation i can use a little book i can do an intervention so i can see there's my intervention cards so all those ways to refine my search if i go back to the home screen the other way i can search is by progression so by that learning progression again so when we looked at number you can see that we were working here with sorry i'm trying to talk in english and french all at the same time we're working with forming fractions so that same learning progression from the book is right here so we can slide along and anywhere along the way we can hit the little magnifying glass and it will show us all of the resources that go with that part of the continuum i go back to the home screen the final way to search is by curriculum so if i click on curriculum let's pop over to grade two number i've got my expectations i can come on down to one point there be 1.6 i can go on the little magnifying glass and again i can see all of the little books and all of the activities that go with that curriculum expectation so head on back we're going to take a look at the best birthday so i'll pull it up here and there and all of the little book lessons are set up in the same way so they always start with a little about so something about the lesson our accent on math our links to the curriculum and our links to that learning progression so we can see where we are in the learning progression we can go back we can go forward if i go back up to the top and go into the details i get my little book itself so i've got some ideas in sharing the story i've got some ideas to present the little book and then i've got the little book itself so i'm going to go to that link it's just going to take a little minute to load and i've got two options so i can listen to the little book and i can read the little book or i can try the activity so if i click on listen and read my little book is going to load and if you are teaching french this is fantastic for me because a lot of my parents in french immersion don't speak french so it's really hard for them to work on reading with their children and a lot of the time if i have a supply teacher they don't speak french so this way it can be read to them and this is available in english as well so i'll just play just a quick minute to show you that the code foreign and so that would just work all the way through the little book and you can see the ideas in the story if i come back to the main page i've also got the option to try an activity and so i use this a lot in my class um i used a listening center so if you have a hard copy of the little books they have a qr code on the back so i could share it that way or i could share it in my google classroom just by highlighting the web address and pasting it into my google classroom and my students would listen and read along with the little book and then they would take part in the activity for the rest of the time that they had and again this can be read to them so the instructions can be read out and then those activities everything can be manipulated and moved around with a little mathematical concept cheat sheet at the and top another page on this activity so we've got more to do there if i go back to mathology.ca and i go back up to the top i've also got connected resources would you mind going back to the math little book um when you were inside the read and lesson end just show them how if they have our license they can share the math little book with home yeah so to share all you're going to do is highlight the web address and copy it and paste it into your google classroom or whatever virtual classroom that you're using the password protected classroom that you're using thank you merci if you want to see that yeah you passed it paste it in chat on teams okay i have glue we're a google board so i put it right in as an assignment my google classroom um so then you go back to mathology.ca After the Reading you've got some ideas for after the reading so what students can do after and you've got additional activities so you've got all of the reprodu reproducible sheets that you can use um in pdf and in word so you can modify them you've got a little assessment that you can do so things that you haven't seen yet that you've sometimes seen that you're always seeing and if there's activities so there's a letter that can be changed up and sent home with you know this is what we've read in our class and here are some ideas of things that you can do at home but links to that little book and then all kinds of activities that go with the little book so maybe it's a story with that you're gonna you know this one here i'm gonna share a crate in how many parts and here they are and i'm gonna draw them the different activities that can extend the learning from that little book back up on the side you can see over on the edge here that this is where the professional development videos are so Professional Development Videos if i click on those i'm going to get short they're usually around eight to ten minutes um little videos about the learning that is taking place and so just to give you an idea here move this one along [Music] [Music] so you can see just short videos to catch you up with the math um to explain everything that's going on to point out any main ideas so just a little extra pd in there so that's the little books just a quick overview does anyone have any questions about the little books before i move on i have just a quick tech question we're finding that when we're sharing the link for the book and the tool sometimes if kids are on ipads the tools are not working um have you found a hack for that at all in your system when when you're i'm assigning it to your kids like laptops seem to have no problem but the ipads at all i haven't had that experience all my kids this year right now are all on computers patty have you heard about anything that's worked i actually haven't heard of that so this is good i'm glad you're you're raising that so i will send that to our our tech folks and see if we can get a a hack as you call it for that so it's it happens when you share a um interactive tool to be using on an ipad is that correct if i capture that correctly that is and i know they have to sometimes they spin it and it goes um a landscape rather than portrait and then sometimes that'll make it work and then other times they just can't uh seem to drag the tool or um yeah using the ipad okay i will share that with our tech folks and see if i can see what i can hear back from them okay all right so if there's any other questions go ahead and write them in the chat i'm going to move on to an activity card Plan but i'm going to take us through a different way so we looked at some ways to search we looked at a little book um and when we look at the resources in mathology there are a lot there's a lot of resources that are available to you and one way that i find it's easy to figure out where you are and what comes next is to look through a plan so if we come up to the top here to plans and we go to all plans you can see that there's my plans that i've worked on there's examples of plans that have been created by pearson and there are shared plans so if you're working with another teacher that has mythology you can share your plans and so if we go in and look at say a grade two long range plan and this is going to show us our plan for the whole year so it's gonna start at the top in september take us right through until june i apologize for the dog sparking if you can hear those um and we're gonna go down two fractions and we're gonna pop up here and you can see all of the resources that have to do with fractions from this uh this part of the long range plan so we start with that same little book at the top and then you can see the activity cards that are going to go along with that and they follow each other so we start with our initiation to fractions and then we can work through all the way down until we get to that consolidation card at the end so they do follow each other and going through the plan is a nice way to see how everything builds and comes together with a consolidation it also shows you the options to get into those intervention pieces so if you need just a little bit more with the grade 2 kit there are in intervention cards as well as these light blue cards are math everyday cards so they're nice ways to get warmed up at the beginning to do a little practice and different activities all the way through so we are going to take a look Activity Cards at an activity card now if i come right back up to the top i click on my activity card and this is the first one so it starts off set up pretty much the same way as the little book so we get into our little about the lesson we get into our curriculum and that learning progression again so we can move it along when i come back up to the details i can see my teacher's card so if you've got the activity kit itself this is what the teachers card looks like it's all the same on mathology.ca it starts off with your list of materials and if it's anything that you're going to need to print out that's an addition it's linked right in there in pdf and in word then you're gonna get into your three part lessons so your before you're during you've got some ideas to differentiate differentiate down here so you've got some accommodations you've got some ways to enrich the activity and you've got some ideas for combined classes so if i'm working with a 1-2 or a 2-3 class i've got some ideas right with this actual activity as to how i can modify that i can come back up for some consolidation things that i might want to point out to my students and things that i'm going to watch while we're working through that activity and again these probing questions so i love these uh just helps really to dig into what your students are thinking how they got there so um how did you share the object amongst eight people um how did you figure out how to name it um was there an object that was easier to share and then you've got the links to the cards themselves so this one here doesn't have a student card because you're going to be working with hands-on materials so this is a great one that you can share um in the virtual classroom because it's an activity to be done so this one here you're going to be working with a paper paper plate that's the word in english and it'll tell you all the things you're going to do the same as that we saw up above on the back of the card you're going to see the behaviors and the strategies that you might see as your students work through this activity so there's six possible things that you're going to see happening with your students and right below that is the next step so right in that moment you've got the next step right there to help your student progress along and if there are student cards or if you want to share this if you go to this little green print button down at the bottom you can click on that and print it as a pdf and then it can be posted in your virtual classroom your password-protected virtual classroom so often if there is an activity with a student card i will put it as a pdf and i will project it and have my students work and show me their work based on what they've seen projected on their screen the other cool thing with the activities is that there are interactive tools so if you click on that interactive tool button at the bottom it'll open up and you will see this one here so if we're looking at representing comparing parts and equivalent fractions i can pop up here and i can pick what i want to do with my pieces so all of those interactive tools when i come back up to the top i can get into my assessment piece so this is one of my favorite things if i pick my grade two class Assessment Piece when i showed you the activity card and i showed you the back of the teacher card you saw those six boxes with the behaviors and the strategies that you might see with your students and the next steps this is exactly the same thing but you can actually move your students in so sometimes it's as quick as a drag and drop if i've got several students i might click on them and move them all over my students right in there get everybody here and then based on the behavior or the strategy that i'm seeing i can click on next steps sign up that comes so i've got next steps in the moment so while i'm working with my students right there here's what i can do and i've got additional next steps which is a link to an intervention so this one here is an intervention two and that's over on the next page but if i click on that it's gonna open it right up it's just going to take a minute because it's loading it's easier if i show you on the other page but it's going to pop up with that intervention right away i'll just take you over here and show you i come right up here there's those interventions right here and so that intervention comes up and again if i need any extra materials i've got links to those right there i've got ways to practice i've got that little green print button again so i can print that as a pdf and put it into my virtual classroom or i can share it however i need to so in this connected resource oh just back to the evaluation these next steps i will tell you are very useful when you're doing report card writing so lots of great ideas saying students are here here's some ideas for what we're going to do next because i know we're getting to that point when i go back to that connected resources so that's where that intervention was i can see that there are some mini lessons so there's a mini lesson for the current year i've got some intervention ideas and i've got some anishisma we want to go just a little further i've got some possible false ideas with suggestions and i've got some next steps so i've got next steps in class and i've got next steps at home which i found to be quite helpful again with that little green print button so i can put it in as a pdf and just saying you know this is what we're working on in our class and this is what you can do to practice that same idea that same skill and then the connected lessons at the bottom so i can slide along i can see at the same grade where i would go with that i've got some intervention ideas i've got some math everyday ideas all linked up so that's quickly the activity cards just a quick run through of that does anyone have any questions about the Interactive Math Tools activity parts okay so if i go back to that plan piece just to show you a couple of things that i can do when i go back into that grade 2 plan if i go right up to the top when we looked at the interactive math tools if you click on that you'll see that all of these interactive math tools are available so they are connected to the activity card themselves but if you're looking for say money you can just come into your plan and you can pick any interactive math tools that you want to use and move those around so those are all right there the other thing you can do is you can take this plan and make it your own so if you use the green button to use the plan and then you give it a name just takes a quick minute and it's going to load everything up and then you have the option to take this plan and change it up any way you want to so if you decide you know what i really don't want to do fractions down here and may i want to move fractions up i can drag it on up to the end of february so i can take that plan and i can use it in any way that i want and it'll move it up there i can then once i get into that part of the plan i can move anything around so i can write little notes so if i want to use this little book i can say that i'm going to use that one i can click when i'm done i can move it up and down i can put the pin so that it will go to my home screen or i can take the lesson out completely the other thing i can do is if i've got a combined grade and i go into ensemble and say i've got a grade one two and i decide i wanna add my grade one stuff right into this grade two plan i'm gonna go all the way along here and i'm gonna do while my great teams are doing this i'm going to work on whatever from grade one i can pull that up and all the grade one activities are going to come up here so i can say while my grade twos are doing this my grade ones are going to do this and i can slide it right into my plan it just takes a minute to slide in there and then all of my plans are in the same spot for my combined grade i can also add in lessons that are not mathology so if i've got great things that i've done before i just write a title put in a url pop it in there and it will come into my plan as well when i'm done with my planning i come to these little dots up here if i've made my own plan i can see if it's covering the curriculum i can get a material list i can share with somebody else who has methodology.ca or i can export it in a doc so lots of ways to play around with that plan and there's lots of things right right on there and i'm just going to go back and show you with the if you are in english if you go to this one right down here grab and go lessons to try today right split up for you some great things that you can try right away so any questions up to this point i'm going to show you my favorite part next Analytics so feel free to write in the chat anytime and stop me but i'm going to show you my analytics so if i go into my analytics i'm going to see my grade 2 class here and i can see everything we've done so if we look at the back of the card we found those six little boxes we can see those six little boxes here for that activity so any activity that we're doing you can see where my students are you can see that we're still working on it you can see that we're on the right track or maybe you can see that we need some attention so i can see that for all of my students for the activities but the best part for me is i can see it by curriculum so i can pop up my b1 and i can see all the things we've done does that automatically update yeah yeah so every time i do that activity it pops into that that overall evaluation so i can see that right there if i go back i can also see per student so if i pick my student here so i pick scott in grade 2 and i want to see how scott's doing i can see oh there's a couple of things if i look at the overall activities but then if i look by the curriculum when i go to b1 i can see where we need to do some more work it's a really good visual for me in having those conversations so parent-teacher interviews at the beginning of the year i'm having those conversations and saying like this is where we need to see a little more work this is where we need to spend a little more time or if i'm having those conversations with my admin it's a quick visual to see where we're at and right away in the moment i've got those next steps so i can go back to that activity card i can click on next steps and say yeah we need more attention here but this is what we're doing about it the other fun feature is that you can personalize your home screen so you can see these five boxes along the bottom Personalize Home Screen you can pin things to them so i've seen some teachers do monday to friday or day one two three four five um i know if i've got uh coverage in my class i'll make sure i pin whatever i want them to do right up on the home screen so it's right there and it's quick and easy to do so if you go up to all the lessons you can see everything up here if you want to put things in your favorite you just click on that little heart and they pop into your favorites and then whatever you want on your home screen you just click on that little blue pin and then when you go back home it's right there for you the other feature i want to draw your Pearson Canada Page attention to is up here what's new and if you click on that little link it's going to take you to the pearson canada page and it's going to show you all the things that are going to help you so we go pretty fast through the webinars but everything right up here is going to be here to help you so there's some links to webinars there's some pdfs some getting started tips some kindergarten ideas some copyright everything you might need to know correlations sample plans everything's right here any questions about mathology.ca okay i'm going to go back i'm not sure where my [Music] other screen went so i'll just pop over here open it back up Mathologie and so for those of you that are looking at mathology you can see that there are some grade three things that are here and some grade three three things that are coming up so the math little books are available all the way through to grade three in french the math maths are now available in french as well as in english so right on wipe off the grade three math activity kit is available and will be number will be in math energy.ca in august so these are these wonderful math mats there's 40 math mats they're laminated they're right on and wipe off and they help you to represent to demonstrate and to illustrate math understanding um to just to talk about and to get a little deeper into your math thinking and to kind of persevere a little bit through as we're solving problems and to explain reasoning the grade three activity kit is now available in french and that's our 30 activity cards and there's all kinds of levels and lots and lots to do with that grade 3 activity kit as well as the grade 2 and the grade 1 activity kits and there is a spring promotion so if you get math energy.ca you get a one-year license you get 15 off print resources and with a five-year license you get 25 off those print resources and lots and lots of mathology spring webinars coming up so the french one today there are some english ones there's a english fractions one tomorrow there is a grade four to six one coming up and there is a math methodology and working through that language piece with the french and the english and the math all at the same time coming up in two weeks and all of those can be found on pearson's website so you can yeah sorry two two things uh worm i did take a quick look the english mythology um grades one to three fractions webinars are next week so when i do the follow up um with you guys i'll send you a link to the um the english ones that are next week they're at i think four on at 4 p.m on tuesday 6 p.m on thursday and we will do a recording of those as well so if you're not able to attend because i know everyone's busy i'll just make sure that each of you who attended who wanted to see the english version um we'll get that to you it'll be at some point next week though just to let you know and there is a question about the math mats the math mats actually are a separate um student item um not in the activity box they are a separate item that you can purchase thank you okay and so you can sign up for your 30-day trial and like patty said you can pick the language that you're going to want to go through so if you go to the pearson mathology website you'll see a button down at the bottom that says sign up for a 30-day trial there's also the link to sign up for webinars right there so all of that is available to you and again follow us online so there is a pearson mathology uh twitter feed as well as facebook community that is really sharing a lot of ideas just in how the little books and how the activities are being used in different classes so you can see a couple of things up here that were shared uh just ways that teachers are using both in class and virtual any questions you can see that our greater essex group are a wonderful group of shares on twitter so i wanted to say thanks for that so i'm going to make sure everyone's off mute if you want to ask any questions of jordan before we sign off for this evening this is this is a a good time i think everyone's off now offbeat if you want to chat or put any of your your questions in the chat box if you'd rather do it that way that's fine too and we have someone with their hand raised i just have a question about the um this was french but i thought this was supposed to be at six o'clock tonight and i heard you say something about six o'clock tomorrow but i thought the english was at four o'clock today and the same thing was in french at six o'clock tonight but this was french so it's english at six o'clock tonight or tomorrow okay so if you're looking for the english product done in english though uh for grades one to three those are being offered next week um tuesday at four and again thursday at 6 p.m if you're looking for mathology the french product um this session was to i think jordan was supposed to be in french and then you're going to repeat it at 6 p.m but in english is that have they captured that correctly other way around this one was in english and at six o'clock isn't that okay so if you're looking for it in english next week um at 4 p.m and 6 p.m and again i will follow up with each of you with a link to a video recording of next week's because i know you guys are busy as well so um one way or another we're going to get you the webinar you want how's that sound okay i think this was the right webinar but i just thought that when i signed up for it this was supposed to be the english one and at six o'clock tonight for the same thing it was supposed to be french but you showed the french books right now and i know somebody else who is planning to go to the six o'clock one tonight because it was supposed to be french yeah so i'm showing you the french resource but presenting in english and then presenting in french next will be the english resource presented in english no because we have the french last court yeah clock one will be the french resource presented in french that's right okay thank you so the english resource will be next week it's it's the same i know i was interested in the french resource but okay so the only difference between the two tonight was that they were both a french resource but one was presented in english and and the other one is presented in french i'll be back on and now we're doing the same thing in french okay perfect thank you and we have a question about um if you have some of the program can you purchase additional things or is it a whole program purchase so excellent question mythology um is quite flexible in that you can purchase everything separately so if you just want math little books for instance you can just purchase the math for the books if you want the activity kits you can just purchase activity kits if you just want mathology.ca you can just purchase it the moment you start combining those you do get a much better price there's some discounts when you buy mathology.ca and the print resources so um long story short you can purchase everything individually or together and when you purchase it together the discount is a little bit better how's that sound i just have a quick question if someone has attended this and they want to try the free trial because we're trying to make some choices for next year on what resources we're going to use yes so beta testing this out for a month or so before the end of the year where do they go exactly if they've attended this to get their free trial do they go to mathology etr yes so i'm going to i i think i did but it went really okay so this page is what link where are you at right now when you show that that link i'm going to type that the direct link right into the chat perfect because and then they make their choice if they're having french or english whatever version they want right right yep okay so it's just etr.mythology.ca that should get that should get you the um to the homepage and now they did they just changed up vague pearson just um changed the the way the the homepage looks when you um register it used to be for trial register here now i think it says um start an account so it's the same thing um it will ask you um what your email address is and it will ask you if you want it in english or or in french so for the folks who want french but they would like to have some of the teacher materials um in english or the parent letters in english you can sign up for english and french and that way you get all the resources in the same license so yeah you might want to try that yep say that one more time just just repeat that one more time so if you are someone who is interested in the french resource so mythology right sign up for the english and ask for the french and it will the the um our fellow rashad will set you your license up um so that you have access to the french resources and the english resources and you can choose which one you showed the students and which ones you use as a teacher oh fantastic thank you yeah you're welcome
