before we get started welcome to our mathology webinar this afternoon um we are going to talk a little bit more about practical supports for teaching k-3 maths in french so i'm just going to turn off my video and we are going to talk a little bit more about the french language and everything that goes along with that in mathematicia and before we really get going i will let you know that i am the bilingual literacy coach for renter county district school board which is just outside of ottawa and i've been working with mythology since it came out in kindergarten way back i got to try it out with my class and loved it and then i got to use it with my grade ones and as it was brought into french and moved up through the grades i happened to move up through the grades as well i got to use it all the way through with grade two and now grade three is in the works and i get to work with teachers throughout renfrew county trying it out so i'm going to ask one of you either elisa or tammy to turn on your mic and play a little game with me so this is one of our grade two activities called catholic and you can be red or yellow you can choose and i'm just going to get you to work through that first equation up in the corner and tell me where you would like i'll say you're red and you can tell me where you'd like me to put your jets home okay so we just have to go almost my sink okay us cis and i'll do this one down here at the very bottom very bottom this one here yeah all right so now i'm up ty's my sis says um i'll do the today's right beside my the one that i have already okay and kettles let me see okay you're up i will pick i'll do the size above one of my tones [Laughter] all right size one lips and then [Music] and your turn i will pick i'll do this sis uh in the second row just above yeah perfect okay we'll just do one more section set catals activity is right and how much conversation that our students can have as they play through this game so it's both the math piece and the conversation tone tool working through your thinking where you want to put everything and that's one of the activities so it's actually concat from the grade two uh activity kit and it goes through all of the parts of a three-part lesson so we're going to do our ava or ma and our ideas for difference and our consolidation so just to give you an example there's a little minds on at the beginning and lots of ways of talking and getting that oral interaction the oral production and the oral comprehension with our students so lots and lots of french going on at the same time as our math and so this is one of the teachers and i just pulled a few things off of pearson's website to talk about both the math and the french and how that can all be integrated together and so this teacher here as i did notice that there are two big problems and one is that the students don't always understand the vocabulary the math vocabulary because it is their second language and they don't always see the link to the real life math and so some of the things that have been put into methodology are the uh the mildemu so with every activity there's a little section with a mule demo with a demo with some things that you might want to talk about you might want to bring in you might want to create a word wall uh just below that you can see one of the activities that i did with my kindergarten students when we were talking about uh one of the little books i think it's i don't remember which one i'd have to see it again it was a while ago but they put their names in and we used the boxes and we talked about moindus psychic justice like and we got pulled in some of the literacy that way and then the below that is a picture from one of the grade three little books where you can see the time and the calendar and all of that pulled right back in there so that real world connection uh here's another this is a superintendent talking about how easy it is to put centers into place and organize games and these are actually students from my grade 1 class and my grade 1 2 class and how easy it was for me to have both my math centers set up with the activity kits but also the little books the listening center the activities that went along with that and some of the reading that i could pull in so i could do my math and my language all at the same time which in an immersion class depending on what percentage you have of the day it's always nice to pull that all together and this is actually me and my students um and my point was really that there wasn't a lot out there that i could use and so it's really made the difference to have the right math tools at the right level and at the right level of french for my students and mythology was adapted and not translated so the french really is appropriate for those students in the second language classroom so just an example this is a kindergarten book and you can see some of the ways that the language has been scaffolded so these are not books that students will be reading independently in kindergarten but you can start to point out those words as you're working with students you can see in grade one we start to have a little more out there we've got numbers things are a little more chunked in grade two i've often had to do some scaffolding around this but again this is not what my students would be reading independently in grade 2 this is what we'd be working through together so this is where i sort of pulled in more of that word wall piece and brought together the language and could use my math and my language block together and then gets just a little more complicated in grade three so everything in mythology is based around that and it's our learning progression created by dr lynn mcgarvey and it's gonna really it's a continuum of learning and it shows us where our students are in their math learning and it shows us their next steps and how that evolves over time um it also shows us if we're working with a certain concept and our students are a little step back what their next steps need to be and the way it's set up is that there is a big idea then there's our conceptual and then designs and this one here goes from kindergarten to grade three and so you can see some are a little bit closer to that left side more kindergarten-based concepts some of them get a little bit heavier towards that grade three end and it's really going to depend on where you are and it covers all of the math strands so that's just one piece of methodology and everything is really based around that but there's also all of these great professional learning resources and professional learning videos all throughout my strategy poinsettia for the classroom there's elito so grade one and grade two currently available french and english grade three on the way pieces are coming out pieces are online um throughout the summer so keep your eyes peeled for that it's beautiful and then the math little books which go from kindergarten through to grade three there's now lesnar so um these right on wipe off spiral bound math mats that really allow us to see our students thinking to allow them to express that a little bit better and it all comes together on methodology and that's good excuse me that's our online platform it's going to allow us to search to plan to teach um to do our assessment and to do our next steps as well as our own professional learning actually i have a question for you if you don't mind will the read-aloud books be available on [Music] mathology.ca yes okay we're going to go right into methodology.ca right in a moment and i'll show you the little books i'll show you the activities i'll show you everything i just want to point out before we go that everything is available in class so there are the hard copy books there are um itself everything is also available on dot ca and it's super easy to transition between the virtual and the in class so you can see my students here with the listening center acting out some of the stories uh some of the worksheets and activities that go along with it there's a qr code because on the back of the hard copy books there's a qr code so my students could independently do a listening center but on the other side of it you can see in my google classroom that i can post those little books for my students to listen to um and the kindergarten ones you can actually just click on the google classroom or the teams and it'll pop it right in there for you with the activities you can see the same activity in the classroom and the same activity virtual so a couple of little modifications um for the in classroom covid an activity that would have been done in groups of two my students are doing independently at home or projecting the activity on screen students are drawing two circles and working out the little pools themselves so we are going to go right into methodology and feel free again to interrupt me anytime if you have any questions or a small group so you can talk as you wish um and this is the home screen so the first and easiest way to search for things is to just write into uh the search bar so me and i'm going to get all the results that i have here for geo weekly all the little books all the activity cards so i can narrow down that search then so maybe i want to look here and i want to go um for grade one and i want to look for just the little books for grade one and then i've got all of that right there the other way to search is going to be by curriculum so you can see here i'm in ontario so i've got the ontario curriculum up so i can pull up grade one i can go into number i've got my expectations and all the way down here i've got these little magnifying glasses so i can find what i need so if i wanted to look up say fractions i can go to this magnifying glass and i've got everything that's going to go with this expectation and then the third way to search is going to be by that learning progression so if i'm in gnome i can work my way through here if i want to look at estimation i can see that continuum of learning i can move it along i can move it back and again i can go on to that magnifying glass and see all of the resources that go with that piece of the learning progression so let's take a look at why don't we pull up a kindergarten book so if i go into all lessons it takes a moment to load because there's quite a lot let's take a look at a kindergarten book since we've got some kindergarten folks in here so the little books are all set up the same way it starts with our apple gives us a little low down on the book our accent on the math our links to the curriculum and again going back to that learning progression so we're going to fall under ducat i can see where my students would be with as working through this book and i can see what the next step would be when i go back up to the top and i go into leads this is where i get the little book itself so you can see here that i can share in my virtual classroom through google me or google classroom or through teams i've got some ideas on packaging i've got ways to present the little book and then when i click on the link to the little book itself it's going to bring me here so i've got two options i can listen and read and i can try an activity and if you are working with a little book that doesn't happen to have that little google classroom button or teams button you can just click on the link at the top copy it and paste it into your virtual classroom if i go to li a quick i'm gonna get the book up here and you can see we can flip through so my students can flip through if they're in that password-protected classroom or i can project it and show it i've often projected these on my smart board and shown this and they can be read aloud so this was really helpful for me because a lot of my parents were in a lot of my kids were in french immersion their parents were not francophone so i could send something like this home and the students were supported and listening i'll play a little bit for you [Music] [Music] a so you can see that it's really not too fast it's got a good pace for a lot of our students and again we can stop it we can scaffold the language as we go through and then if you go back you've also got the option to try the activity so i often use the little books like i said before as a listening center my students could listen to them and then with whatever time they had left they could come and work through the activity and again with all of that reading up there they could listen so then you can see here so for this one here so you know right and working through that with a little bit of math info up here at the top i go back to my methodology points say yeah so that's the little book right there all the little books are up there i've also got some connected resources so i've got some ideas for ab hilarity i've got some additional activities up here so this is a page from the teacher's guide that can be used it's got some activity ideas i've got all these links to the fish reproductively so one of the ones i like most is this activity and i can pull up this link as a pdf or his word and it's just going to give me a letter that i can share in english or in french and i can click and put in these ideas of things that parents can be trying at home so we've been working on this book try doing these things i've also got any math tools that i might need to mathematically [Music] maybe there's some little games everything is going to be right in here and then they listen connects over to the side i've got my little professional development videos here most of them are around that less than 10 minutes point and i'll just start it up [Music] let's give you some of the background on the activity and on the math that's [Music] happening [Music] so you can see those are just videos for you to give you some of that math background so that is a quick overview of the little books does anyone have any questions at this point all right we will move on to one of the activity cards then so why don't we pull up the activity card from the game that we played a little earlier and again it starts off the same way so with our app football it's going to give us our time if we're going to play it in partners it's going to give us our curriculum links lisa and completely then again our links to that point can i see how we can move back how we can move forward with our students when we go back up to the details this is where we can see the activity card itself so if you've got lats in your class you'll see that this looks just like the teacher's card that's in la trois it's right up here except that right at the top anywhere where there's an extra piece that might be needed there's a link right here so this one here we might want to use a created um to support to scaffold the link will be right there in pdf foreign word then we go through our master sv so our ava getting a little minds on ma and our app so if you look through here we've got ideas for combination and we also have ideas for a combined class so if you're working with say this is a grade two activity if you're working with a grade one two class or if you're working with a grade two three class you can be doing the same activity just by bringing in a different fish deposit so maybe the numbers won't be as big if you're working with grade ones maybe the the equations will be a little bit more complex in working with the two three class and i'm going to say that take a look at these um the first couple of times that i worked through most of these activities i didn't look at these i really just wanted to do the activity and do it really really well but there's so much value that comes from these kids now that performs not just in figuring out your students thinking and then getting them to express those things so here is that teacher's card so if you have the kit this is a teacher's card it's everything that i showed you up at the top everything's right there if i go to the next slide you can see on the back of the teacher's card that this is the assessment and evaluation so we can see what our students are doing what strategies what behaviors they're doing as they work through this activity and right there they tap and remember this because i'm going to come back to this in a minute and this is the student card itself so this is the side that we played and it's our category if you turn the card over you can see it's a little less complex so the numbers get a little smaller so right there we can differentiate just by flipping that card over and then our support pieces so our data this if we need that down at the bottom here we've got the interactive tools that go along if we are working with this virtually so this one here we've got an interior that's this if we click on that it's going to bring us right up here and we've got that 10 frame so we can work with that virtually so all of that's right in there and if you remember the back of the card they comported if i come up to the top now and i go to evaluation i can see those same boxes so i can take my class then when my class to do my name and i can say my students these three here i saw this or i can just drag and drop them down and pull my students and then right there in the moment so this is what my students are doing this is what my students are doing there's often also ones with an intervention piece and that's on the next page but it will be linked right in that bottom piece as well so we're going to come back to where everything goes from this evaluation when we get into our analytics but before we do that i just want to bring you to the next page for this activity card electros connects we have mini lessons so we've got leni and those interventions that i talked about are right here so you can click on that intervention piece it's going to show you your materials it's going to show you everything you might need links to any extra materials and you can take this little print button here and you can push that and you can send it through pdf and you can post it in your virtual classroom just change it over to pdf and some ideas for next steps and again with that little green button and so these are really great for me if i was working on something with students i could you know say this is what we worked on in our class today this is going to be your next step for your asynchronous time and then as i mentioned in the beginning so it's going to bring us some of those things that we might want to pull out as vocabulary to work through with our students as we're going through the text as we're going through the activity things that we might want to bring up in oral conversations and then all the way at the bottom so these are super fun i used to do these um right at the beginning of my lesson every day we did something from mats to usual just to get our minds on and then often any affiliate if you are working in a virtual classroom i forgot to mention this if you go to the card itself you can project this so again that little green button at the bottom if you go to that and you click on pdf you can take that pdf and post that in your password-protected virtual classroom so you can play it the same way that we did today have a little bit of interaction with your students so those are the activity cards any questions at this point no questions in chat yet uh jordan so again feel free to stop me at any point i'm going to keep going because we're going to get into one of my favorite pieces now which is la nality so if i come up to the top here and we go to lana litak and i've got my class to do my name if you remember we were looking at those boxes on the back of the cards when we did evaluation and you can see that there is the activity that we were doing you can see those eight boxes that were on the back and you can see how many students we put in there you can see that it was seven out of our twelve students that were evaluated you can see that we're uncalled up with this activity i can also see so that's going to show me just a quick visual of everything if you want to look at it a little bit more uh in a more organized way like i do you can do it by curriculum so i can pull up that ontario curriculum piece and i can see for b1 this is where we're at these are the activities that fall under b1 and we're we're trucking along in b1 so i can do that and c by curriculum i can also do this for my students so for each student i can go through and see pull up jane and again i can see just a quick overview of where jane is in her learning and this is really great for conversations with administrators for conversations with parents it's a quick visual to see where we're at and again i can pull that up by curriculum so i can say you know when we're looking at b1 this is where we're at we're called the progression and we need a little bit of extra attention okay all right so that's the analytic that's our evaluation and i also wanted to mention this is really great as we move into report cards because i can see right there where we need to work and i can see those next steps so i've often used those next steps in writing my report cards you know jane is uh on the right track here jane needs a little more attention here this is what we're going to do again stop me if you have any questions jordan um when you ha we're on jane's lesson where it needs more work by the red button do you mind going into the details because usually it links back to where you were and reminds you about your next steps right usually uh it's giving me a comment on here this one do i need to click again or you could just go on to the link on the left nothing's happening here uh wait typically yeah i went to the details and it opened up it will take you right back to the uh assessment that you did and we'll remind you what your next steps are yeah so it's showing me what the strategy is oh and it's giving me the option to go back to this one here i pick my class again so that i can go back to those next steps thank you so i'm going to show you the plan next and the plan is up here because there are so many resources um i kind of like to use the plan as a way to see it all put together for me so see what i need to do and where to go with it and this is a great piece so i've got my plans i've got some examples of plans that have already been created and that are put on there and then i've got shared plans so if i'm working with other teachers that have methodologies we can work together to create shared plans so if we look at uh paneer and this is going to be my whole full year plan and actually did this plan with my students uh one year in grade one was fantastic and the first thing it's going to bring me to is interactive so it's right here in my plan and if i click on that i can see all of the options so one thing i've always had a hard time finding is canadian money so right here i've got that money and i can manipulate that and move it around so that's right there at the top of my plan and then i get into my plan from september all the way down to june so if i pick uh actually we're going to take this plan we're going to make it our own so we're going to come up here and we're going to use the plan we're going to say me and it's going to take a moment and now that plan is mine which means i can move things around i can adjust things if i decide you know county on september fine but i want to start with county right at the beginning i can slide that up to the top and i'll move that around so i can really move things around any way that i want to with this plan when i get into culty i can see that there's three little books here when i work with a little book with my students it takes me about a week to really dig into the french to dig into the math um to really work through everything in that little book so there's no way if i'm doing three things in september that i'm gonna get through also three little books so what i can do is maybe write a note saying that you know um use this one and maybe i'm even going to take something away you can also see all of the activities in the order that they're going to go through and they kind of come in clusters so that you can you can deepen your learning as you go through so we're going to work at this learning with one and then we're going to go to the next one and then we're going to come down to a bit of consolidation at the end so all of that is right there ready to go for me and it goes through the whole year i've also got the option to add in other lessons so if i'm working with a grade one two class if i come to assemble two i can go through i'm in primary county but if i want to add doozy my name c i'm going to go down to do s and then it's going to show me all of the grade two activities so if i can say you know my grade one's here i'm about contagious excuse me i can come over here and find a grade two activity uh that i want my grade twos to be doing at the same time and i can drag it and drop it in and so then my plan is done for both grades together i can see it it's all laid out so this has been really great for me for conversations with administrators because they can see everything right there i can share this with them they know exactly what's coming i can also add lessons that are not methodology so if i open this up i'm going to give it a title i'm going to click the url in here so i you know i've got some great things that i've created in my google drive if i want to add that right into my plan i can do that i can just click that link to add that in there and it'll be part of my plan as well so you can see my plan as we go through and then when i'm all done and i'm happy with all the pieces of my plan if i come up to these three dots here at the top i can see if i've created my own plan from scratch i can see if it's covered the curriculum um the plans that are already created that are on there are going to cover the curriculum but if you want to take a look you can do that you can also see the list of materials you can share it like i said if you're working with somebody else who has methods you can say you can share that plan together or you can export it into a docx so that's the planning tool i'm just going to show you a couple of fun ways to personalize things when you get onto this home screen when you get here right away you can see that there's these five boxes at the bottom so if i take these little pins away i can personalize this any way i want so i've got my favorites that i've already chosen and all i've done to choose those favorites i go back and i go to all the lessons you'll see that there's these little hearts on the side if i love something and i don't want to take the time to find it every time if i click that little heart it'll become a favorite i want to go into my favorites you can see the last one added in there it is and if i decide that you know um i want to have it right on my home screen easy to find i can click the little pin and then when i go to my home screen there it is so with those five boxes i've seen teachers do day one two three four five or monday to friday i often leave if i've got a supply teacher coming in i make sure whatever they need is right on that home screen ready to go it's really however you want to set that up for yourself other great thing is if you come up to this button here click on that it's going to take you to pearson's site and everything you need to know about methodology is going to be on here so there's going to be getting started uh tips some little tips and tricks um some videos some of the webinars that we've done before the copyright guidelines as well as any core curriculum everything's going to be right on there any questions at this point okay quiet crew tonight we're just going to pop back to these presentations just a couple of things to tell you about methodology we were talking about that spiral bound book um of math mats those are now available lots and lots of tools in there just to really help our students explain their thinking bring out that reasoning and we've got some promotions for the string on methodology so looking at getting that methodology teacher license for a year or five years and with that year you get 15 off the print resources with the five year you get 25 off those print resources and webinars just like that are happening all throughout the spring so this one tonight we've got uh one coming up again with mythology so with the french having fun outside with math there is a few english ones coming up if you look on mathology.ca i think fractions is coming soon that's right jordan and you can sign up for a free 30-day trial on masala that little button at the bottom that's circled in right here that says i accept that jewel and you can try it out you can see all of the things that i showed you tonight play around with them try them with your students all right there for you i also encourage you to follow mathology on twitter and on facebook there's a great community going with lots of ideas being shared between teachers as to how they're using those resources what they're trying out with their students how they're using things in the classroom
