I'm Miranda and I am about to turn my video off but I'll be walking you through the webinar today with a focus on grade one like you mentioned any time we get you to chat you can put that right into the chat but if you do have a specific question you can use the question and answer section and either Heather or Kim or patty or anyone else from Pearson that's joining us today won't be able to help answer some of those questions so thank you so much for joining us at the end you will receive according of the webinar probably tomorrow if not Monday morning so keep that in mind as well and so I just want you to think about your context as we go through I am a teacher from Toronto Catholic but I am seconded to pierce a working as a math consultant and I'm going to introduce Kim right now as well Kim you want to go ahead hi I'm Kim master Martino and I am the planning and implementation manager here at Pearson mostly in Toronto but currently I'm in Peterborough at my house and I support an implementation of math and mythology across Canada and today I'm here to just monitor the chat so again quickly for those people that have just come in if you can make sure if you have questions specific for us put into the question and answer you just hover over the bottom and click question and answer and we will get to you there and then we'll leave the chat just for general chat and math talk and then just a last reminder to make sure that your button there says all panelists and attendees so that we can everyone can see your responses Thanks and we also have some other people from Pearson on here some of our sales reps are on here so you might see some like panelists respond to you or you might see Heather Fischer respond to you I see also hailey on there there might be others that I haven't scroll down to find so if someone is responding to you they are also with Pearson so welcome all other Pearson people too and then Miranda patty oh hi and it's patty Henderson I'm math marketing manager and talking to you today from lovely hot damn town Toronto so glad you could all join us perfect so let's get going we are gonna be asking you to participate Kim's already mentioned the chat and so we will ask questions along the way and we encourage you to jump in and offer your ideas in there so just to give you a quick overview we are gonna talk about math learning at school and at home we know probably either you're in BC and kids are starting to go back one or two days a week or you're here in Toronto and we're not there yet and maybe in September we will be but consider all those contexts the possibility that we all go back that some of us go back that none of us go back consider all those possibilities as we go through today and think about planning and differentiation today I'm gonna walk you through the learning progression the mythology little books and activities all through the use of mythology ta so we will talk about the print components as well but today we're gonna focus on the digital knowing that there's a potential that we can continue to do some learning and teaching from home so we've got two layers of components and you might be here because you know about our open access to little books and to the parent letters you might be here because you have open access to Mythology CA or you want to gain access and we do have access available until June 30th 2020 but you may also have mythology CA that you've had before this all happened or you're interested in thinking about it before September and we also have the print components and we'll be talking about that as well and so we're gonna walk you through in some of those different scenarios so before we get started we do have a poll um and I'd like to launch and if you could give me your responses that would give me a better sense of who's here were with us so just take a second to answer the poll should pop up right on your screen and it gives me a better sense of how to pivot during this webinar okay so we've got people that are new to mythology some people that have been using the little books for a short while and then just under 10% of you that have been using it for three months or more so I'm gonna give you about three seconds left for anyone else that wants to vote and then I let in the poll so it looks like the majority of us are new to mythology so I will try to do my best to go slow I am notorious for talking fast so if you have a question please drop it in the chat and Kim will try and answer it as best she can or anyone else that's here that can help you out but I will try my best to go nice and slow even sorry can I just interrupt for one second yeah I'm just looking through the attendees and even though we are focusing on grade two there is a lot of grade 1 or 1/2 teachers here so you know thinking about across both those grades would be really helpful absolutely so because it are combined grades sorry sorry I've got the dates and things wrong it is grade 1 good it's great one today okay today that are the possibility that there are lots of combined grades joining us and how that can use your combined grades absolutely thank you so I will relaunch the second poll and let's see if I can do that we'll do them both right at the same time oh maybe not get going alright so mythology ta our mythology actually is a family of resources and you see them here that the resources are from K to 8 across the bottom you see the professional learning resources things like the research that we did before we began writing through professional resources and the learning progression that shows that continuum of how students develop in their understanding of mathematics and then across the top currently we have k23 available as we are moving up the grades eventually we will get to grade 8 that is the goal and so we're today we're going to be talking about the little books the activity kits but all through mythology CA so that will be our focus here today doesn't want to go let's try this again you okay now I'm frozen try one more time you my apologies it's nice and hot so maybe she's maybe my computer's not very excited here we go one more time third times a term I'm not sure Kim the other possibility is that you can share your screen let me just unmute and go in to grab the PowerPoint here can you close the okay I have to close the poll and if you can I'll close the poll so I can see where I'm finding things as I am looking if you could still see if you can reboot yours I'm gonna try one more time by apologies everyone okay grade one there you go I'm able to pull up the PowerPoint and so if I can share my screen until we get going I'm gonna just share my desktop here and so Miranda do you see the PowerPoint now yep okay and slide number where do you want to go to seven single Gary I go and I will present that I can get a present going I can't seem to get the present going let's just start from here perfect video and just let me know when you do it everyone okay so here is the learning progression and the learning progression is a step by step developmental sequence for how concepts develop over time in mathematics this is our k23 document and it was developed by dr. lynn mcgarvey and at the university of alberta and it is organized according to strands and then subdivided into big ideas conceptual threads and indicators came if you want to go to the next slide so here you see an example of one of the pages of the learning progression and so when thinking about planning the learning correction can be really helpful because we know where students are come from and where they need to go to so here you see number at the top would be disturbed we've got the big idea that quantities and numbers can be added and subtracted to determine how many or how much and then we have them subdivided into conceptual threads so here we've got conceptual meaning and then fluency of addition and subtraction and so you'll see that as it goes from the far left okay to the far right at grade three how ideas develop over time and how some of that learning might develop over time thanks Kim in addition it's built along a pathway so we've got 72 titles from k23 math ology little books that go along a pathway and you'll see here that it begins with that's ten which is a grade one story and it continues to develop over time through some more grade one stories integrate two stories at the end where we see the great dog sled so those ideas developing over time this idea that you might begin with adding and subtracting to ten and then you move to adding subtracting to 20 and so on and so forth so all of our books have been developed along the continuum so for some of our teachers that are in here that think about combined grades we have combined grades or cross that that will continue along this pathway and so if you have a combined grade you might use two books along the same path where you're working on the same ideas but at a level that works best for the students in your class so the grade one books in mythology are really here to meet students where they are it really is to support differentiation to be really flexible and to build engagement as you can see through some of these pictures just these front covers right off the bat kids seem to really attract to these books because they're really bright and colorful and fun and engaging and in grade one we have eighteen titles they're all again organized by the math ideas half of the stories are number and then there's embedded cross-trained connections in addition there's indigenous connections we've had Canadian indigenous authors and educators across Canada helping us with some of these stories and of course all of them have been adopted for French so let's test out the chat out what do you see what math do you see in this image this comes from one of our grade 1 stories Canada's oldest fort what math do you see and while you're doing that I'm going to try and take over the screen again some ran did you want me to stop chair yeah there you go there you go over yeah all right so here we are and we'll give just a few seconds for people to put in the chat what math they see you all right so what kind of math are we seeing in there Kim can you give me some just call out some of them yeah so many the math is sorting multiplication arrays and then we get into things like difference greater than less than and some are actually putting stories in how many people are wearing red how many people are wearing blue I'm in one suggestions this slide is great for a number top awesome that's great so not just number I heard things like sorting and patterns so all of these stories are really gonna draw in that idea of one particular focus but then of course those cross strand connections so this is a book from number but of course you're seeing other things in here as well so I want us to keep that in mind that the stories are a great way for students to enter at a place that works best for them I'm using the wordless text here but of course the stories are there as well and we'll talk about that as we go through as for the activity kit there is a great one activity kit and it comes with two boxes that you see here in the corner one box again number the other box the other strands and so this was developed to really support teachers with lessons here you'll see a three part lesson with explicit differentiation right there on the card itself for accommodations extensions and combined grade you've got probing questions to help you along the way and things to look for as you're working with students I mean perhaps you have a small group that you're meeting with virtually and that might be something that you go to to consider what kinds of things your students are showing you as they display some of this addition and subtraction operational fluency and on the back of the card is the assessment component and that's there to support you with what to look for insofar as behaviors and strategies the students are displaying as they work through some of these concepts in group one there are over a hundred activities and 60 accompanying colorful engaging cards with this built in different all adapted for French again so let's do the chat one more time do you see any opportunities to differentiate if this was a card in front one of your students the front I have here in the center and the back of the card there in the bottom right corner do you see some opportunities to be able to differentiate for the students in your class we'll give you just a second to that into the chat you you so I think people are taking a look at the pictures to think about what are the possibilities you more and less working in groups counting with a raise and tastic so we have entry points for lots of different students so the students that are ready to think about a raise and maybe they're ready to move into skip counting or repeated addition we have other kids that might be thinking about more and less and how much more and how much less we have other students that are ready for some symbolic representations where the numbers are already there and they're using a combination of the pictorial and the numeric so there's lots of different opportunities for kids to go in and when I think about something like this I think about the student that has choice that they can go in and think about the image that that maybe speaks to them or create a story that inspires them or that they can relate to because of the image that's getting them to think about that so we talked briefly about open access the little books and the parent letters are all available at piercing Canada dot see a back slash at home and those are all available until the end of June and so I encourage you to go and check it out and then of course mythology CA is available right now until June 30th as well with open access and you can try it out yourself today we're gonna walk I'm gonna do a walk-through ethology CA and how you can access all these components so here when you get access to the little books you'll see that they're organized by grade up at the top we a kindergarten but as you scroll down you'll see the grade 1 grade 2 and grade 3 stories of course all of this is available in French just by toggling between the English and French at the top right corner and then as well in that same homepage you're gonna see open access to mythology yay currently grade 1 and 2 are available at grade 3 is coming in the fall and in addition all of the activities the books the line masters they've all been correlated to your provincial curriculum I've heard that we have people from Alberta I heard that we have people from EC I believe we've got people in Ontario so of course all of these correlations have been done to make sure that the activity that you select is meeting the expectation that you're hoping to address and then of course if you're in Ontario like us or there's I'm sure talks of it in Alberta if there's a new curriculum it will be updated right away so let's go in math ecology dossier takes all those little books and the activities and puts them in one place to help you easily search plan teach assess and track and some professional learning opportunities so we're going to go in there right now and take a quick look so when you enter mythology dossier you come to this very homepage and there are several different ways to search you can search by keyword perhaps you're working on addition you type in addition and then of course you can narrow it down by your grade for all of us in here grade one maybe we've got some grade twos you can narrow that down as well the type we've talked about activities but there's also little looks as well and there are consolidation cards to wrap up those units as well and then we've got some intervention lessons and you can narrow it down by that as well today I'm gonna narrow it down by an activity and even further I'm gonna narrow it down into the Strand so narrow down by numbers so now I see that I have seven results for addition in grade 1 under number and this gives me a quick glance of what activity I might want to be working on you can tell either by the title or a little quick summary of the about and of course you can click on it to get a little bit more details I'm just gonna go back to the home page and I can search also by curriculum so today I'm in my account which is Ontario so I'm gonna be searching by my Ontario curriculum here I'm gonna go into perhaps I'm working on operation sense we'll continue with that theme I click on the magnifying glass and up are the 10 results either books or activities that allow me to address that particular expectation another way to go back is to use either the back button but also the home the home always takes you back to the home page here I've pinned different activities that I really want to focus on today with you onto my home screen and you're able to pin them or unpin them as you need to that was silly because I need this book all right here we go so Canada's oldest sport that's the image that you saw right at the very beginning and here you'll get a quick little summary of what it's about adding and subtracting 220 and comparing and ordering like many of you have mentioned in the chat we get a quick gland at the mouth focus and the curriculum that's being addressed by using this story the processes and competencies are all tagged here and the learning progression here highlighted in blue is the part of the learning progression that's being addressed it's using this story but of course here it gives you a quick glance of where it comes from and where it's going to which can be really helpful in both differentiation and planning so if you're looking for something that addresses the modeling add to and take from situations you have an opportunity to look here in the details tab that's the next tab over to the right you see the story right here it's linked and you can click on it and you have the option for students to be able to read and listen and you can share that code with them and they can read and listen to the story so if I click into the story turn the pages let it load look at mom's lacrosse team says Roe's mom tell us about lacrosse and so you can have the stories read to your students or they can read it themselves depending on the needs of the kids in your class there's also an activity that accompanies each one of those stories that I'm not going to go into today but it's available there things to think about as you share this story you might be doing a shared reading with a group of students or you might be doing it as a whole class and as you do your first read you've got some suggested questions that you might be looking at in the related resources are all accompanying line masters here you have a connection connection letter I'm going to click on that one in PDF or in word if you need to adapt it for your school community you've got the PDF version here it's a note to you as the teacher and then of course to the family and you can cut and paste or modify as you need for your class we also have different types of line Buster's here I'm just gonna highlight a few of them this one is for a game you might be sending home one game that students can work on and this line master is downloadable just in the top right corner and of course you can choose the word version if that works for you and then of course there are some word problems that can continue some of that thinking with your students and of course you can adopt them if that's something that your students need I'm gonna end it can I just stop just for a quick sec because I'm having a little bit difficulty sometimes answering all the questions so just a quick reminder but there's a specific question if you could pop it in the question and answer and then that way we're kind of answering the question once that other people might be able to see it and then if we don't answer your question right away I know that it's coming up from Miranda so and then if anything we don't get to at the end we will address everything so just to make sure we capture everybody's question thanks Miranda thank you all right and so that's the story and so of course like I said before you can always backtrack to go back to the homepage or you can hit the home page and that'll bring you there you'll notice my pin is removed now because I've gotten rid of that pin but I can go to things and favorite them and put it back in just like that and so now it's back on my homepage the next thing I need to do is go into an activity and you'll see at a quick glance the stories have their thumbnails here that's how you can tell it's a story and then the activities the orange panel indicates grade one and I'm telling you this because when you have access to Mythology CA you have access to all grades not just one grade so for those combined grade teachers you might be looking for a grade one activity but you might also be looking for good too so you've got that option in there as well the activities are all structured in the exact same way you've got the about page again a quick little summary of what this activity is about with some suggested times of course those will vary if you're doing it at home you've got the curriculum components that are being met by doing this and we talked about cross strand so if there is a cross strand component it will be tagged there as well and of course if new curriculum comes all of this will be retag and available for you and then again the learning progression here at the in the details tab it'll look a little bit different because now it's an activity so the activities and the stories both living in mythology CA and so here I'm using an activity it's activity number 34 and that's corresponding to the print component if you're familiar with the print box here you'll have suggestions for what you might do before during and as you consolidate and some suggestions of highlights for students things to point out in Ontario we call them success criteria but somewhere else you might just think about things to highlight for your students as you wrap up the lesson how to differentiate like I mentioned on the card is right here in dot CA as well and what to look for so you might be working with a small group of students you might use some of these probing questions and the what to look for us and again all your corresponding PDFs are attached here at the top sorry I shouldn't call them PDFs I should call them line masters they're all right here in the top and so if you want you've got access to some line masters here as well and so maybe that PDF of the pictures that you might want students to go in and draw on they're available there as well for you here it makes a mention of the little books that are corresponding to this activity that go hand in hand that work on the same topic and so that'll give you a little bit of information there and at the very bottom we have images of the print components you've got them here for yourself the front cover of the teacher guy the teacher card the back the images from the student card the front and the back if there's an interactive tool or a multi-use card that you want to use that you might provide for students to help support some of their understanding that's there as well and the interactive tools so perhaps you're showing or modeling some of that thinking you might pull out some counters to make that happen and so you've got that option there as well and so I've got a counters tool building block and a tempering tool sitting there at the bottom the assessment I'm not going to spend too much time on but you're able to X upload all the names of your students here I've got a demo class of made-up students and of course I've decided what their names are you do that as well as you build your class you might use their student number or you might just use the first and last initial whatever works best for you of course you're determining the names of your students but of course as you see students display some of these behaviors and strategies you pick them up and you can drag and drop them or perhaps you saw two kids displaying the same behaviors and strategies drag-and-drop them and they drop into that position here when you click on next steps you have the opportunity for an in-the-moment next step a move that you might make immediately to help move them from this third box over into the fourth box of course development of understanding moves along the bottom and so here there are two concepts the fluency and the conceptual understanding here in related resources you have additional mini lessons for on grade those students that are working on grade they might you might use the practice to send it home for supports with them the intervention for those students that might be maybe having difficulty creating a story problem you have the opportunity to do a maybe a mini lesson with them or some practice if you're working with them and then the extension opportunities as well so all of them are just a little drop-down and I drop back up and of course you can print those if that works easier for you as you're planning misconceptions are here as well and the next at home so for some of the students in your class you might want them to continue that learning and so the here's a letter to parents just like there was a letter for the books now there's a letter for the activity and it's housed in the next steps at home that you have that you can share with parents here you've got related lessons so the next lesson in this sequence is going to be sitting here on grade and you can toggle between other activities an additional piece here is that if you're looking for some ideas or some suggestions or things that you might want to focus on when you're using this activity we've got little videos sitting on the right-hand side and so we've got learning highlight videos and learning connexion videos learning highlight videos are those that address the activity itself and I'll give you a taste right here invite students to talk about what they see prompt their observations with questions such as how many yogurts did mom buy altogether 13 yogurts in total how many were strawberry four strawberry yogurts so the problem can be wrong Bach 13 strawberry and blueberry yogurt four were strawberry how many blueberry yogurt does she buy or ask how many strawberry yogurts fish you buy for how many blueberry yogurt nine so the problem could be mom bought four strawberry yogurts and nine blueberry yogurts how many yogurts does she buy altogether it is important that students are exposed to different problem types and not just those where the whole is unknown this will encourage students to develop more flexible strategies to solve them for more information on varying problem types see chapter 3 about slauson's book what to look for [Music] so accompany every single activity you've got a little one-minute video that can help give you suggestions and sometimes it's tips for consolidations sometimes it's strategies they're all different and they all meet the needs of those specific activities the other layer that we have and I'm not going to go into it today but those are the learning connexion videos and they talk about how an idea like addition and subtraction unpacks over time using the learning progression so it will begin with early ideas that you learn in K up to Grade three ideas that you might be developing that sense of a raise and multiplicative thinking or repeated addition so that is going to be in there as well so thinking about the opportunities for differentiation as well another piece that I just want to briefly touch on before we go out of mythology dossier is the plan component I know many of you are here just to see what kinds of plans or where do I even get started if you go to the plans section there are sample plans here for you if you look in the sample plans we've got grade one and grade two sample plans here a long-range plan which will give you the whole year at a glance so you might begin with counting and here are some books and some activities that you might do that address that idea of counting and then move into comparing and ordering and patterning and so on and so forth your whole year is laid out for you if you decide that this is the plan for you use the sample plan name it whatever works for you maybe it's by 2020 one year and I'm starting to plan already now you see the option to be able to modify or adapt things that work best for you so perhaps I want to start with a story and then I want to move up an activity and so I can pick it up drag it and drop it into the place that I'd like mine's gonna take a second or I can move it with the arrows and drop it down or drop it up again you've got pin feature that will bring it to your homepage and that will be there for you as well or maybe there we go so now I've got a book an activity a book another book an activity maybe I want to change the sequence and so I move that arrow and bring the lesson so now I've got book activity book activity and I might vary that way or I might vary another way maybe I don't want to use this story at all and I can delete it and it's gone another component that's pretty new to mythology dossier is the ability to click click off when you've completed it so if I've completed it now it shows up in my left hand panel that I've completed one of those seven possible activities that address counting here again on the left hand side I can change the sequence as well perhaps I want to work on 3d solids before 2d shapes and so I can drag and drop it the exact same way over here if we've missed a lesson and you want to add one in or you want to add a non mythology lesson things that you've used before in the past that you know and love and you want to add it into your full plan you can add a non mythology lesson right here by selecting the type either a word doc a PDF and so on and so forth and you can add in your non matheny lesson there the other piece that's really nice about the plans is the ability to see at a quick glance what's being covered based on the plan that you've created not based on what you've already finished but rather if I follow this plan that I've created what will I be covering as far as curriculum or what will I be addressing I have a material list that will give me suggested materials that I might need for the year based on the plan that I've built and I can share it with colleagues if I go to click share I can share with another math ology teacher perhaps I know of my teaching partners email address I know they have a mythology TA account I might go in and share with them give my plan a name and off it goes and so then they can use the plan that I've curated as well the last piece is to export so for some people they prefer to use the export version where they can pull it out of that's ology CA and modify it and make notes as they see fit if they aren't comfortable with writing the notes in here you're welcome to do that and export it to a doc as well so yes so I again I'm answering questions did you show not a how to add non mythology lessons I did yes okay and then also asking about printing about the scope and sequence in other words printing plans printing your full plan yeah yes so if you export it to a doc you can print your whole plan out so let's say you've built the whole plan you've changed the order you've made it the way that you want it then you can export to a doc great thank you no problem all right so I'm actually just gonna go right back to my powerpoint and point to ask you a question so I've shown you lots of things and I know I am quite fast putting in a second to share your ideas with each other you saw lots of things in mythology dossier books and cards to help you with engagement and flexibility differentiation planning and of course teaching what's something that stood out for you what might be helpful for you as you continue either teaching at home or as you go back into the classroom when it's time I'll give you some a few minutes to just type that into the chat so Miranda just as whereas they're putting in those things can you explain the difference between the kits so the question question is are the kit cards available online so absolutely so the kit is available in print it's all the components that are in print are duplicated or reflected in mythology CA and so you'll see that exact same card tags the exact same way with the same titles and the same numbers in mythology CA so whether you own the print component or mythology CA they are the exact same those same 101 activities that live in the kit also live in mythology CA and then in addition mythology CA has all the extensions the the intervention lessons the planning tool the assessment tool it has all that in addition yes so it's great so we here I love the planning feature I'm a first year teacher very helpful love the differentiation love the video supports I love how there's a home component and how this can be used to meet the needs of all my students both about the activity kit and the map a little books live digitally in mythology CA it's yeah it's like a one-stop shop you can get everything from here that's awesome my students love the activities so here's some Sherry's obviously used it now that Cove it happened I'm not sure how we'll be able to use the cards now so some some of the cards you might get actually kids to recreate them at home so I'm thinking about a card that we have that let me just give you an example if I think about some of the cards there it's a math mat you may actually get kids to read just draw their own card um put a box cut it up and they can use it that way for others you might actually use the line master so for that card that we just saw let me just can't pull this up here the activity card that ice shared with you no do not I'm meaning for all and actually while Miranda's doing that like if you only have access to the cards and you don't have access to the dot CA then it's a matter of adapting the actual activities that you see on your teacher card and sharing that with your students the line masters are all available online and so those are easily used and virtually all so yes so if you're reading the instructions you might have this print component in front of you and you're reading the instructions you might get them to draw something to help them with this particular activity and if it's another activity like let's go to a related resource another lesson maybe it's let's go fishing yes we know the cards are beautiful and the kids do love the cards themselves but if you do have to adopt it for home you've got that option yeah you have stopped sharing your screen oh dear so some of the other things that are liked I like how easy it is to find activities to move students to the next step the planning and the differentiation the analytics in the dot see a fabulous ok can you guys see again yes perfect ok so my apologies so here's an example of another bright colorful card that you might have and of course we love them and the kids love them but we know that it's challenging at home and so they may just recreate these boxes with the plus and some more boxes with an equal I know that they're creating some addition sentences so we've got to get a little bit creative here and I know it's not ideal but you've got the suggestions here for you and then you might adopt it for the needs of your own class so great lots about the planning and being able to manipulate the scope and sequence according to what you need when you need it that's great perfect ok good stuff so I'll do a quick recap because I know I went fast we've got little books that include that indigenous perspective on the inside cover of the teacher guide you've got a note from the author to help some for us in working with student and helping to better understand the stories themselves all of them have been adapted for French immersion so here you've got the story that moves from memory book and I won't attempt this because my French is not fantastic but of course they've all been adopted and here you see Maurice is gored in English so not just a quick direct translation but rather in an adaptation for the students that need it for French again in mythology CA searchings made very easy you've got three ways to search either by a keyword by curriculum or by the learning progression itself I didn't go into that option but you've got that right here you've got the option to play and we talked about manipulating and using it to meet the needs of our own classes you've got the sample long-range planners that are there you can add and remove lessons as you need to you can download and share with colleagues as long as you hit the use sample plan it becomes yours name it and
