Introduction right so again welcome everyone thank you for joining us for this webinar on fountas and pinnell classroom phonics spelling and word study just to kind of give you an agenda of our time together today just gonna spend some time going over the fountain Pannell classroom just a general overview of the instructional context and then we're gonna dive right into a phonics spelling and word study and take some time to uncover what that looks like and what's happening inside that instructional context as well as the links to the continuum and the comprehensive funnik spelling a word study guide from there we're gonna get a chance to look at how does a lesson unfold what does the lessons look like how are they organized so you can get a sense of that and some of the resources that come with the instructional context phonics spelling and word study and then as I mentioned we will pause at the end for some questions but feel free to type in the chat as we go if you have anything that that pops up alright so obviously as I said our time together today is going to be focused on phonics spelling and word study and it is connected to the other instructional contexts that are part of fountain Pannell classroom and obviously is an essential part of of a coherent literacy system what you'll notice is on the bottom of your screen there's a bunch of other tiles so there's seven tiles altogether and I just kind of wanted to highlight the other instructional context so you know what those tiles at the bottom of your screen represent so the first one is interactive read aloud and this is really the core of literacy instruction so it gets students thinking talking about the text obviously there's high teacher support the teachers doing the reading but really just building that love of books for students and so what you'll notice with infants in Pinal classroom is all these instructional contexts work cohesively together and so leading off of that is reading mini lessons and this is a chance for teacher to deliver some whole class short mini lessons you can use the interactive read aloud shared reading or other mentor text to apply and share the learning and the mini lessons with the students and getting them to think about their own reading and also writing about reading from there you'll see shared reading so SR is shared reading again high level teacher support here we're involving the students and opportunities to stretch their thinking beyond maybe a level that they could handle on their own it's also highly interactive for the students because they're taking part in those multiple readings that we do with a shared reading text following that is guided reading and so this is a chance for students to take part in small group instruction as the teachers there to scaffold and support them in their reading and stretch them as a reader and with challenging texts that are around their instructional level and then from there you'll see independent reading so this is an opportunity for students to have some chance to self-select books and really build their identity as a reader and of course we want to encourage them to be reading every day so that's what I R stands for and then phonics spelling a word study well we'll get to that one in a little bit more detail throughout our time together and then following that is book clubs and this is another opportunity for students to do some self selection it's really based on interest and you know the types of books that they they want to be a part of part of and there's a variety of genres that they're exposed to when they go into their book club groups so with that just kind of that brief overview we're going to now take a deeper dive into phonics spelling and word study oops here we go so you'll see here oh there we go that's the slide he was looking for it is a whole group instruction but there's also opportunities for students to work individually or in partners or in small groups to apply that the learning that they're doing it is just a handful of minutes every day obviously it looks different in different classrooms so it could be five or six minutes with those young learners it could be more it could extend possibly to 10 or 12 minutes and so there's that teacher mini lesson or that explicit instruction is happening in phonics spelling word study but then there's also the part where the students are actually applying the learning and so you'll see that unfold in a few slides what that actually looks like and then you'll get a chance to see what does it look like inside of a lesson from there I just want to highlight that the lessons are based on the nine areas of learning within ranging from obviously early print concepts all the way to word solving and you'll see those nine areas highlighted in later in our time together I will note that the interactive read aloud guided reading and shared reading books as well as words that sing the poetry charts are just other opportunities for kids to apply their learning from the principles that they're learning and phonics spelling and word study and those explicit lessons it's another opportunity for them to apply their learning in other instructional contexts of reading and writing such as those ones shared on here so students get multiple opportunities to work with those concepts and those principles and transfer that learning into other work that they're doing okay so the next part that I kind of wanted to jump to is straight into the continuum and the Literacy Continuum reason why I wanted to spend a few minutes in here is because the literacy continuum is really the roadmap or the foundation for fountain Pannell classroom so everything for fountain Pannell classroom stems from the literacy continuum and if you haven't had a chance to look more closely at it you can find this resource you have benchmark assessment system at your school this resource is actually found in that box or you you may have it purchase separately as well but if you haven't looked through it it is organized by eight continui you can kind of see them in the background they're interactive read aloud shared reading and so on and obviously one of them being fun expelling in word study and so within the continuum it shares behaviors and understandings that we want to notice teach and support for students and it's set out grade by grade and so these are the kinds of things that we want or we hope that we can support students in acquiring by the end of each grade level and this is a really great resource and tool to use to support instructional decisions that we make so not just in phonics spelling and word study but in the other instructional context so if you do have it in your school you may want to take a deeper dive into it and there's all sorts of supports out there in uncovering and diving a little bit deeper on the Pearson site in the Hyneman site around the literacy continuum so that's where the phonics spelling and word study stems from so that's kind of that guiding piece but there's also another piece that goes hand-in-hand with it and this is kind of a companion resource the comprehensive Comprehensive Phonics Spelling Word Study Guide phonics spelling and word study guide and this really digs into those nine areas of learning and it puts it on a continuum so that you can see and it gives you that kind of comprehensive picture of what we want our learners to learn from pre-k all the way up to grade eight and it clearly describes the principles as I said related to those nine areas of learning and it is organized so that within there the principles and there's a kind of a zoomed in screenshot of it you'll see Principles that the principles are organized and just receive doesn't want to zoom in them for me that they're organized by grade level but then you'll also see an e M and L kind of at the top you probably can't see it on your screen but what you'll notice is that it outlines it as early middle or late in the grade level so during the time of year are we saying that that's a principle that we would want to teach earlier on in the year middle of the year or late at that grade level in the year and if you have this guide you can kind of dig in and look at what are those behaviors and then what is that instructional language and then like I said you can see the little blue dots on your screen where it's organized by grade level so you can really see how the learning progresses and the concepts get more complex as you as you take a peek at this continuum and as I said it's organized by those nine areas of learning which we'll talk a little bit more in detail in just a minute and again if you have any questions please feel free to post in in the chat so on Phonics Spelling Word Study here you'll see that when we talk about phonics spelling and word study it fits in to these on the far right of your screen it's kind of that orange column and you'll notice that anything in the blue kind of purple color is reading and then the yellow is writing and then phonics spelling word study but what you'll also notice is that within phonics spelling a word study there's opportunities for whole group small group and independent work and so this is one area where we can see on this graphic where phonics spelling word study is supported in many instructional contexts so anywhere that has that orange dot in side of the the shape inside the rectangle or the square within there any of those that are identified also with an orange dot so for example interactive read aloud shared reading guided writing those are other opportunities where we can embed the principles and reinforce them the ones that we've already shared explicitly during our phonics spelling word study lessons so it just gives that those students another opportunity to work on those principles and it really gives them that opportunity to not only engage in the principal but then also to apply it to work that they're doing and practice that they're doing in the Lior in a small group the final thing that you'll notice on the phonics spelling words stay there so it goes from you know we're doing that explicit lesson as a whole group we're doing some small group or individual application of the lesson but we're also coming back as a group and we're doing a group share and that's another really important part because as students do the application piece and the practice piece we really want them to be notices of words and how words work and letters and sounds and uncover that learning and have that opportunity to come back as a whole group and really share their thinking and their learning so here is the lesson structure in phonics spelling words say so as I said this whole group than the application piece it could be literacy centers in Phonics Spelling Lesson Structure those longer grades it could be something that students are doing with partners or they could be working individually and then as I said they're gonna come back and they're gonna do that whole group share so it's really that systematic instruction and we really want to think about what are those multiple opportunities we provide for students to develop their understandings and their behaviors in phonics spelling and word study and develop those competencies because of course we know that they need to develop that strong understanding to support them in their reading and their writing so here's another look at it and the reason why I put it on this slide I've included the lesson structure but now Out of Text Teaching you'll also see on the left of your screen that there's also that opportunity so that out of text teaching so that's where you're gonna do that lesson it is really inquiry based as I mentioned we really want the students to be notices of of language and words and prints and we really want them to construct their own thinking during during that time so it is really inquiry based and and they're gonna do that when they also have that hands-on practice when they really dive in and apply what we've what we've taught in the explicit part and then you'll notice at the bottom there that then there's an opportunity for assessment to happen now there's also in text teaching so you'll notice and I have another graphic to show to kind of illustrate this but there's also those opportunities for students to engage in all of those in text opportunities as we're going through an interactive read aloud for example so there could be vocabulary and interactive read aloud or book clubs that we may highlight in you know an actual break where it seems like a good opportunity to reinforce those understandings it could be in an independent reading conference where were talking with students about what they're reading and again there's a perfect opportunity to revisit or reinforce the phonics spelling words to a principal that the students have been working on so it really depends on you know the principles that you're working on and thinking about then how can those apply to those in text teaching opportunities and where are good opportunities for those things to happen right we still want to keep the flow of the reading happening during shared reading but it might be a good opportunity to see some rhyming words that happen in there if that's something that we've been working on in our fun expelling and word study okay if again if you have any questions please post them in the chat and hopefully you get the sense from this visual that students are really hands on in their practice especially in that apply piece so I'm not I'm not teaching piece two we have them turn to their partner and share their thinking so that we can make sure that they understand what they're going out to do before they head out and do the application piece but again it's really those opportunities for that hands-on kinesthetic practice and the other thing that it does is that when students are out doing the hands-on practice it's also an opportunity for us to think about how do we provide opportunities at varying levels so we want to make sure that we're meeting all the learners in our classrooms and we can certainly do that because we may have kids working with different letter sounds or different words when they're applying that work that word study or that phonics or spelling principle in the lesson that they're doing so again here's just another visual just kind of gives you another sense of what it looks like the the difference with the one on here is you can kind of see the tie-in Out of Text Visual to well it clearly outlines the the writing that's happening as well so you see that you know things can be happening the connection to the reading but also the connection to the writing so that out of text opportunity to teach the students as explicit lessons and then to reinforce those concepts in text there's multiple opportunities for that to happen okay so let's kind of dig in a little Sample Lesson bit deeper as to what this looks like when it's in action and cut and I'm gonna give you a sample lesson for you to kind of take a look at on the screen and again if you're interested in downloading other samples I can tell you where to do that but as I mentioned before there's some whole group teaching there's small group the lessons are based on those nine categories of learning so I've talked about those a few times so if you're interested in what those nine categories are they are there on your screen right now so you can kind of get a sense obviously those early literacy concepts or you know the understanding of letters and and how they work and just those early print behaviors to you know text the way text moves left to right so all of those key understandings from there we're thinking about phonological awareness and really we want students developing their ability to listen to sounds of the language and being able to identify different components like what is a word what are sounds and really hearing the sounds of the language letter knowledge we want them thinking about the symbols of the language so the letter and of course it's important that they're able to identify you know uppercase lowercase and distinguish the differences from one letter to another letter sound relationships so here we're thinking about an understanding of letters and sounds and we really want to link that knowledge to the letter sound relationship so you need to obviously have letter knowledge to connect that to the sounds and so that's really really a key piece and a basic under - of the understanding of print so important piece that we need all students to have good control over the next part is spelling patterns so obviously knowing you know spelling patterns can help us notice and use other parts to both solve words but also help us in our writing when we're writing words and high-frequency words well of course it's opportunity for students to work on recognizing high frequency words we want them to be able to do that quickly and automatically and so some of the principles are focused on that word meaning and vocabulary so again this is going to support students in their their reading on their writing but also for them to help develop you know comprehension and knowing what words mean is important and from there we look at word structure so again the rules of building words and notice noticing variations in words and compound words contractions those kinds of things and then of course word solving actions we we want to make sure that students are well equipped with strategic moves that they can use those in the head moves so that they can solve and word solve as they're they're reading and of course as they're writing okay so let's look at an actual sample lesson and give you a sense of how its Lesson Organization organized phonics spelling and word study is organized inside of the fountain inside of the fountain simple classroom resources so I will let you know that currently there is resources out up to grade four grade five and six or in development and will be ready for the fall so hopefully there'll be samples available sometime soon if you want to see what it looks like at those upper grades but like I said currently it's not grade four so I just want to highlight if this is the lesson folder that you are sorry the lesson that you get with this instructional context so the lessons are actually inside of a of a book and by grade level of course and this is what a sample lesson looks like so you'll see here that this is a word structure lesson this is a grade three lesson and what you'll notice is it's late in the school year you can kind of see it in bold on your screen a little bit hard to see but I do want to just highlight a few things that are kind of important features within every lesson and they all are laid out the same so all of these components are part of every lesson inside fun explaining word study so there's obviously that you will need and the materials that you're going to need further for the lesson the online resources you get access to that and access code when you purchase phonics spelling word study and so all of the games or all of the word cards and stuff like that will be included on there and those are on the online resources they also have ready resources so oftentimes you'll have your stuff from the ready resources it's all the word cards are already printed for you but if you need to reprint or access more you can get them on the online resources and then from there you'll also see that it'll identify if it's a generative lesson so some of the lessons in here they're going to highlight whether they're a generative lesson and basically it means that you can use this lesson or repeat this lesson again using the same sort of structure but you might change the words that you're working with so for this one for example they're looking at prefix so you may go back and revisit this lesson but this time you might do it looking at a different prefix so just gives you that opportunity to know that and it will identify that at the start of the lesson for you by putting that in the margin all right from there it also then has the principal for you of the of the lesson so what you'll notice is in understand the principal that's really the teacher theoretical language that we want the teachers to be familiar with and kind of gives you a sense of and background information about what you might as the teacher want to know and then the part that we would share with the students is explain the principal so you'll see that to the right of your screen there and this is really clear concise language and it's the common language we want to use with students to really get them thinking more deeply about the word principles that they're working with so that is the language that we share with the students the understand the principle is designed for the teacher to kind of give you that purpose of why you're working on this principal and the importance of it and then also each lesson then the highlights the key principle that's highlighted here comes from the comprehensive phonics spelling word study guide so that's where that principle is being pulled from so it's all connected back to that so that's that information the other part that's Lesson Plan on that front page that I want to draw your attention to is within the plan section so they always have this whoops this section about let me just bring that back up there there we go consider your students so if flew off the screen there again sorry about that so in the consider the students that part is really important because it really gives us a chance to think about what do we already know about the students what do they need to learn next you may want to pull a small group and do something prior to doing a whole group lesson so we're really just giving you that information about thinking about the students before you move into this lesson and then from there below that is working with English language learners so you'll notice that they always have this on the front of the lesson and it provides thinking so there you can see them a little bit clearer picture but really just for us to think about those English as a second language learners and what's important to them and what kind of supports need to be in place so that we can support them in their learning to read write and obviously think in this new language and just ways that you know would be important within this lesson so these always change they're not general principles and are the same for all lessons they're specific to each lesson that's inside of phonics spelling word study okay from Teach there on the next page of the lesson plan is or the lesson folder letting the lesson plan sorry it's not a folder it's inside of a book but there's the teach section so in here it outlines obviously what we're gonna do so here we're getting students to notice our word parts we're gonna you know use a pocket chart there's always a image there for you to refer to so you can get a sense of you know how the lesson could unfold what it could look like but this is really that teach part so when we talk about teach apply share this is really that that teaching component and we're just giving opportunities could be for students as we start teaching this lesson there may be opportunities where we're gonna get them to turn and talk and you'll see that this leads then into the application piece so this is that mini lesson that proceeds the opportunity to for them to actually apply their thinking now in some of these you'll notice they may have gray dots next to a language or a prompt within there and that just means that it's an opportunity for so a number three you'll see that the little gray bullet it's just an opportunity for us to make sure that we pause and give students an opportunity to respond so even though this is that teach part we still want students to be active learners during this part and of course you can modify this to fit your students that you're working with so this is just a suggested language that you might use and a suggested sequence that you might roll through as you teach this word principal but again you know your students best and what might fit their needs best so of course feel free to adapt this as you see fit and make it work for the students that you're working with okay and then from there the students are actually there's the apply share sass Assess component assess component so within there here the students are actually going to play follow the path and this any instructional procedures that you'll need are highlighted and I'll get to that in just a second but in here so that's gonna outline what the students are going to do the action tags on the side will kind of be those reminders of what they're gonna do during that apply section and I'll zoom in on the action tags in just a minute but this is the chance for kids to work they could be working independently sometimes they're going to need to work in partners or in small groups but this is that opportunity for them to recognize the principle that you're working on apply their learning and construct their learning because of course when we bring them back to share we want them to talk about their new learning what they learned and share that back and we may and you can see in this one I want to create a class chart or something else where we revisit that principal and put some examples on there and then the assess part so during this part again things that we want to notice as students are working and things that we want to look a little bit closer at there are some more formal assessments included in the online resources by grade levels so if you already have found some Pannell classroom phonics spelling word study you can look at that and a little bit more detail on your online resources if not you're able to access that once you get an access code if you've purchased and then like I said those instructional procedures and the action takes so the Instructional Procedures action tags again help students remember what to do during the apply section and the instructional procedure is just a detailed description of the instructional procedure that happens within the lesson and there's a handful of those so it'll tell you where to find that if it's not an instructional procedure that you're familiar with it will direct you to the page that you need to go to but you'll often see that there's a handful of instructional procedures and so kids get accustomed to those because they pop up you know they're gonna be working with consistent instructional procedures throughout their phonics spelling and word study so they become familiar with how those work so some of the other examples are like saying sort those kinds of things okay Connecting Learning and the next part is we're gonna connect the learning across the contacts so as I talked about that before we have those explicit lessons that are those mini lessons that students are a part of that are they're learning those word study principles but then we also have an opportunity for kids to revisit their understand and develop their understanding in different contexts so here you'll actually see some examples of where that could happen so here they're referencing inside a shared reading could be in guided reading could be in shared on this for this lesson shared writing and also independent writing if it does have let's say for example interactive read aloud it will reference the text that you could use to revisit that principle so those are always supported there and then from there there's an opportunity so sorry you can see that in a little bit more detail and then from there there's the opportunity to extend the learning so this is a chance for our students to think about other experiences that we can provide them with and other challenging activities in order to think about their learning more deeply then there's the connect with home now these are not necessarily you know homework assignments per se but they're just other ways that you can get the students to connect with family members and and make some connections between home and school they may bring the game home and play it with some family members as in this lesson but there's always connect with home suggestions provided so there Lesson Structure are in the in the lower grades actually there are a hundred lessons and I don't think I mentioned that at the start that's in k23 and then there's just slightly over 105 in grade 4 I'm not sure what how many will be in grade 5 and 6 I'm sure somewhere around the hundred number but one of the important things to learn is or think about is that there is a suggested sequence provided so I mean I just shared just one sample lesson with you but also to remember that you know it's totally up to you to adapt the lessons how you feel will benefit the students most you may even adapt a sequence you may decide that you want to skip a certain lesson because students have already have a strong understanding of that principle or you may want to revisit lessons so there's lots of decision-making that can be done through the fun expelling and word study instructional context so although it's highly systematic there's still a lot of opportunities to make it your own and make it really responsive and meet the needs of the students that you're working with the whole idea hopefully you can see as we ran through that lesson fairly quickly is really that you know we're not getting really students to memorize anything we're really getting them to be a part of the learning apply their thinking construct their own meaning we really want them to be a part of the learning and it's not just giving them you know a bunch of rules to follow when they're spelling things but again that whole inquiry approach okay so um the other thing I want to share with you before our time is up System Components today is just a little bit of a breakdown of what the system looks like or if you already have it your schools and you're wondering what all the pieces are I've just put a few screenshots on there so you can kind of get a sense of the pieces or the components that are part of the system so you'll notice that on the right image there there's a box and everything comes in side of the lesson folders and stuff come inside that box the comprehensive funnik spelling word study guide that I already talked about is part of it as well as the word study lesson so the lessons are all found inside of that book and then of course there's ready-made resources you can kind of see in that cardboard box there's a bunch of word cards picture cards and so on you obviously get access to the online resources which on there has the materials that you'll need by lesson access to the assessment guide game maker which you can use to customize and when you're teaching or having students do the application part and so you can make Word cards or game boards or you know pocket chart cards and you can customize those to meet your needs in addition to the ones that are included in the ready-made resources the other thing yet you'll see on your screen there is in those younger grades there is a singer/song of poetry so that's just another opportunity to immerse students in poetry and language to build their oral language and develop our neurological awareness so those are the components within the system and as I said already there is a suggested sequence that you can follow especially when you're new to using the phone expelling the word study instructional context it might be very helpful for you to follow that sequence and then adjust as you as you see fit again if you any questions feel free to please post them in the chat I'll also hang on the line for a few extra minutes but I just wanted to make you aware of some other webinars that we have going on so if you're interested in hearing about any of the other instructional context that dates and times are on your screen feel free to sign up once you do you will get access to the recording link and you can revisit that at another time it's more convenient for you I do want to also just if you want to reach out to anyone regarding samplers you can certainly do that I can put our sales rep contact up or if you have any questions you can contact them as well the link that I put in the chat box you can access that if you click on it the Pearson Canada CA / FPC that will get you to our home page and there's a little book icon at the top if you click on it you can click into the different instructional context and if you go into the phonic spelling word study you can actually download a virtual sampler so if you want to look at lessons in more detail or see lessons from other grade levels that's a great place to go to see how they're you know they're organized the same way but just to see how the lessons change from one grade to another and where you may want to explore another instructional context so again if you have any questions your reps contact info is on the screen they can answer you or direct you to the Account Executive in your territory if you want to explore anything further how do you order the resources you can connect is the question in the chat you can connect with the sales rep that's the contact for your area so hopefully you see someone on this screen there let me know if you don't see anyone for your area but hopefully there's someone there you can reach up to them their emails there as well as their their phone number again I really want to thank you for taking time out of your day as I said at the top of our webinar I know it's been you know a the crazy couple of days or weeks in in schools and in your areas and so I just hope that you all stay healthy and again thanks for taking the time to join us today and have a great evening if you have any other questions I will stay on here for a couple of more minutes and that's it so thank you
