Introduction welcome my name is Siobhan Murphy and I'm the planning and implementation manager with Pearson Canada thank you for joining us stay for the found Symphony classroom phonics spelling a word study webinar just to kind of give you a sense of how the time is going to look today I'm going to provide a brief overview of the fountain Finnell classroom just to kind of give you a sense of the different instructional contexts that make up this comprehensive literacy structure or resource and then we'll kind of take a deeper look into phonics spelling and word study and what it really is and this how the structure of it set up inside found some Pinal classroom I'm going to actually walk you through a sample lesson so you can take a look at how the lessons are laid out and then I will at the end just provide a brief overview of the components or resources that are part of this instructional context and then take any questions at the end as well so I did in the chat box post link if you want to go on our web page and you can access the sample resources that are there and so what you'll see is so yeah and if you wouldn't mind posting that again the Pearson Canada CA / FPC just for those people who are joining in on the recording but what you'll notice is on that website you can actually go on there and download a sampler so if you want to see the lesson I'm gonna walk you through or other lessons at other grade levels for this particular context you'll be able to see it you'll also be able to see the other instructional context if that's something you're interested in viewing a little bit in more detail ok so let's get started here so what you'll notice is phonics spelling and word study as it's on the Instructional Contexts screen there is one of the context of a few that are part of the fountas and pinnell comprehensive resource but there's also a bunch of other instructional contexts that make up this resource so one of them is interactive read aloud and that is you'll see at the bottom of the screen there on the tile IRA and the core of the instruction so children here are thinking reading talking about text so the teachers they actually the one doing the reading of the text but students are like I said doing thinking and talking during that component woops my slide just get forward on me they're just one second you oh sorry I think I dropped off there sorry about that the next tile is reading many lessons that you'll see across the bottom are ml and this is where the teacher delivers a whole class short mini lesson and there the teacher here's using interactive read Aloud's or other mentor texts to you know deliver the learning that's particular about that students can apply to their own reading and writing the next one across the bottom but you'll notice is sr and that one stands for shared reading so here there's a high level of teacher support to help students process the text students are engaged in the shared reading and it offers opportunities for them to stretch their thinking be interactive with the reading so in this instructional context the teacher would be doing the third reading and then the students would be interacting with the text on followed readings from there the next tile across the bottom is guided reading so the gr and of course that small group instruction the teacher here is providing some scaffold and support to teach the reading so that we're really stretching those learners and moving them forward in in their reading and processing of texts from there you'll see IR which is independent reading C R students are self selecting books and they're really building their identity as a reader and then from to the right of that you'll notice phonics spelling and word study and we'll get to that one in a little bit more detail as our times together today and following that is book clubs and this is all based on interest again students are self selecting the books that they're reading during the book club time all right so let's dig into phonics spelling and word Lesson Structure study so the way it's set up is it is whole group instruction and then there's a individual partner or small group application opportunity and then the students come back together as a whole group and share so I have a few slides where you'll be able to kind of see exactly how the lesson structure works for this instructional context the first five to ten minutes is where that teachers do explicit instruction and it may look it could be 12 minutes let's say the mini lesson but it's a short period of time the teachers they're sharing the principal and the thinking that the students are working on and the whole idea here is that we we want the students to also be a part of what is happening during this time so they're actively involved in maybe sharing their thinking and when they actually go out then and do the application piece it's really that inquiry we want them to be notices of letters and words and how the language works so it really gives them that opportunity then to apply what they learned in the mini lesson and obviously that opportunity for us as teachers to observe the students and inform future instructional decisions based on what till we notice with the students the lessons are based on the nine areas of learning I will go over them in just a few slides so you can get a better sense of what those are they're also referenced in the literacy continuum which I'll touch on it briefly and in a slide or two the other thing that I will mention is that and you'll notice this as we go through our time together is that there is some out of text teaching where we're doing phonics spelling a word study lessons but then there's some in text teaching and that's where we revisit those principles and reinforce them through interactive read aloud or guided reading or shared reading could be through poetry but other opportunities throughout the day so that students have more exposure to those principles and more opportunities to construct their learning around phonics spelling and word study and of course then to apply that in their reading and writing so here's the literacy continuum and Literacy Continuum inside of here there is so there's eight continua within the literacy continuum this may look familiar to you this resource it runs pre-k to 8th grade 8th and it's actually found inside the benchmark assessment system box so if you found some Pannell benchmark assessment system at your school this resource is inside that box or you may have it at your school you can also purchase it separately so maybe you you have it or you've seen it in your school even if you don't have the assessment system but there are eight continua in here and one of them is actually fron expelling and word study and so the continuum with with the literacy continuum how is this all these eight continuo and it's really the roadmap or the foundation for fountain Pannell classroom so breaking it down into each of the continua it describes specifically behaviors and understandings that as teachers we want to notice for teach for and support students with to build their understanding and their competence with strategic actions and their reading and writing abilities so as well as you know oral language and all those components of literacy so the this literacy continuum is really at the center of everything that that happens inside all of the instructional context and like I said one of the continua is phonics spelling and word study so inside of there in this section it actually presents it by grade level for this one and it's just a general guide that of the kinds of understandings that we want students to acquire by the end of each grade level and it's broken down into the nine categories which I referenced on the last slide where I mentioned and I will go into more detail in just a little bit and so this this continuum is really used to support instructional decisions and goals that we want our students to work towards one of the Comprehensive Phonics Spelling Word Study is that is a companion for phonics spelling word study to the literacy continuum is the image or the book reference there on the right of your screen so the comprehensive phonics spelling and word study guide and what you'll notice in this resource is and I'll just kind of give you a screen shot of it I know this one's hard to read so I'll zoom in on one of the pages you can kind of get a sense of how it's broken down so again it's down done by the nine area so one of the areas letter sound relationships and that's the slide that I have on the screen and in each details or in each section by the nine areas this content this continuum is looks at the grade level and all the concepts and where they take place and at what grade level and you can see on the screen here how a lot of these concepts overlap and take place over several years so we're not saying that kids are going to recognize and use middle constant sounds just agree to that's a behavior and understanding that is going to take years for to develop but one of the nice things here is that we can see as students progress up the grades how do those behaviors get more complex looking at some that obviously develop over over a number of years and you'll notice too that it's kind of got three columns for each grade level and again I know it's a little bit hard to read on your screen but it says e/m and L under each grade level and that just stands for early middle or late so early in grade 2 middle of grade 2 or late 2 in grade 2 and really what we want to think about here is just think about those clearly defined behaviors or principles and then the instructional language that would support that so this provides a nice overview when we're looking at phonics spelling and word study at multiple grades how those behaviors progress from one grade to another you you you all right so as I mentioned before there's lots of components when we talk about literacy and lots of things that make up literacy and you'll notice here on this slide that there are multiple opportunities to for things to take place in whole group small group or independent work sorry just one second sorry about that and what you'll notice is everything that's in that sort of purple color his reading and then yellow writing and then phonics spelling word study is is in orange and you'll notice that learning in one context supports learning in other context so you can see it Lots things connected thereby by lines and how they all work together but you'll notice at the very top is interactive read aloud really supports all contexts and so it is a whole group opportunity but it also filters down and and and students can apply what they're learning here into other instructional contexts and you'll notice phonics spelling word study although it is on it's on on the far right there it's also embedded in those other instructional contexts so anything that is marked on the screen with a orange dot inside of the box is other opportunities where a phonics on word study can be revisited or take place so obviously when we're doing an interactive read aloud there may be a good natural spot to take a break and possibly address something that we know about vocabulary or a principle that we've been working on phonics spelling in word study and just an opportunity to highlight that for students and and revisit those principles in a natural way in those contexts and that those are also supported inside of the lesson plan that's there so when you see it you'll be able to see how it references the out of context teaching opportunities in these other instructional contexts now what you'll also know is that it is that the top talks about a response of literacy teaching obviously you know we're responding to the students in as based on their specific needs so we may change our interactive reel out to address behaviors or skills or strategies that we want to reinforce with students or that we notice that have been a challenge for many students we might choose shared reading books based on principles that we want to highlight so we're very intentional about what kind of texts were using what sort of goals and principles that we're focusing on for the lesson so the lesson structure for phonics spelling word study it is systematic instruction and in the way that we provide the opportunities for students to develop phonics spelling word study competencies so what you'll notice here is again there's that teach that whole group time for kids to work together and then in the application piece this can be set up a number of different ways so you could have kids working or students working in small groups or at literacy centers the students could be working in partners or they may be working on their own this is also an opportunity to look at what words so if we're working on a concept or principle during the application you may have students working with different words and so that's an opportunity to really meet that diverse learning needs in the classroom because they might not all be working with the same words or the same prefixes or suffixes depending on where they're at as learners and how you want to make sure that you're meeting their needs so that can look different and and then we come back for the group share so again as I mentioned that kind of at the beginning of our webinar the whole idea is that we want students to be notices of the language so they really get that opportunity when they get into the application piece and they really get to build kind of that inquiry model around you know the activities that they're doing during that time and then of course the reason why we want to bring them back together for the share is that so they can share any new understandings or thinking's or any thing that was even reinforced as they worked through the application part of the lesson and it also gives an opportunity for peers to share like like I said share their thinking and and learn from from the other students in the classroom so what you'll see here is Out of Context InText Teaching on the left of the screen there's the out of whoops the out of context teaching and then the lesson structure is obviously in the middle but and then on to the right of the screen as the in-text teaching so the out of text is those explicit fun explaining words today lessons that we're going to provide and then the in-text teaching is how do we embed it inside of those other instructional contexts now what you'll notice is we might teach something whole group in an out-of-context lesson or out of text lesson and then I may be working with a small group and guided reading and we may look at that principle or that concept that we worked on in the out of text and revisit during the guided reading time or in the book club time so like I said not only do they have the hands-on practice in the out of text but then they get to revisit and you know reconstruct their thinking during those other opportunities so here is just a bit of a breakdown of what it kind of looks like in just a different format and then it here's where like I've told you I've referenced these nine areas of learning they're outlined here on the screen obviously they're in more detail in the literacy continuum or in the comprehensive phonics spelling and word study guide so in either place you'll be able to find them in more detail and get a sense of exactly what they are so I'll just run through them quickly and what you'll notice here before we get into the nine areas is that the whole group lesson it suggests 10 to 15 minutes it may even be 5 depending on the learners you're working with and the lesson that you're doing so the nice thing here is it really gives that the teacher the opportunity to make those decisions about what that's going to look like same with the small group time it could be 10 15 20 minutes again based on how you have it set up in your classroom the type of application activity that the students are doing and the lessons as I said are based on these nine categories of learning so I'll just kind of run through them fairly quickly but just so you kind of have a sense of how the lessons are structured so they come from one of these nine areas of learning obviously with our early learners some of the important ones are those first couple so when we talk about early literacy concepts that's really the foundational understandings things like knowing how to read left to right voice to print matching all of those kinds of things understanding letters and words and how they work and then from there we look at phonological awareness and so here we want students to be able to hear the sounds in words and develop an awareness of Rhymes and syllables and onsets and all those kinds of things from there we look at there's also letter knowledge so some of the lessons will be around letter knowledge and here we're getting students to think about the symbols so like the letter and also being able to identify them so uppercase lowercase those kinds of things and those are mostly worked on in those you know kindergarten grade one and then from there as we start to kind of progress up the grades and our students have a good understanding of those first couple of areas or categories we look from there at letter-sound relationships so here of course we want our needs students to understand that letters and sounds linked to letter sound relationships and that letter knowledge is connected to sounds and so that whole idea of phonics and connecting letters to sounds and the other one below that is spelling patterns and so we want students to be able to understand that groups of letters and how they form words and patterns and words and word parts and that sort of thing that helps obviously with students as they're decoding words when they read but also encoding words when they're actually doing writing high-frequency words so we want students to develop those automatically and quickly and word meaning and vocabulary again this is important because this is obviously helping the students as they develop and work on comprehension and it's important that you know they learn vocabulary and the word meanings that they can not only think about them in their reading but also apply them to their writing from their word structure so words are obviously built according to two rules and we want students to be aware of those structures how they're related to one another how they can how words can be changed and you can break downwards and notice variations and all those kinds of things compound words contractions and the other last one there on the screen number nine is word solving actions and of course these are related to the previous eight that are listed on your screen but these are those in the head actions that we want students to be able to have a strong understanding of so that when they're reading and writing they're able to as I said earlier decode words but and word solve to help with their comprehension and also to help them as they develop as writers as well so those are the nine areas so you'll see obviously the one lesson we're gonna look at today will fall into one of these nine areas but that's the way the lessons are organized the interactive reloads and shared reading books and words that sing can be used as mentor texts if you don't have those components because each each instructional context is separate you can always use other interactive read Aloud's that will reinforce the concepts are the behaviors are the principles that were part of the lesson and it always gives you ideas within the lesson right at the end about how that could look so let's actually take a look at a lesson in a little bit more detail you oh sorry I think I got muted there so Instructional Context I'll just back up and start this slide again you'll notice that this slot this lesson it's a grade 3 lesson it's for the context or I should say the area of learning word structure so when we just talked about those nine areas of learning this one is falls under word structure and it occurs late in the year but of course as a teacher you can decide that maybe you want to do it earlier in the year but it's suggested that it's done later in grade 3 the resources that you'll need are highlighted in the Marge in there and you'll notice that some of them are referenced as online resources so when you purchase the instructional context you get an access code and so some of the materials that you'll need will be on there or in you're ready reference materials that's already ready made resources I should say that you receive so if you need another copy or want to make extras you can go on to the online resources and then the other materials that you need a reference there the other thing that it does is some lessons or generative lessons and what you'll notice here is that these types of lessons can be repeated over and over so you that then it has the structure obviously for the lesson but you may decide to you know revisit or present that concept again using other examples other words so for example if it's on prefixes you may revisit this lesson again but changing the prefix and working with a different one so it always kind of indicates that in the margin if it's that type of a lesson and then the other thing that you'll notice on here is whoops Understand the Principles that there's the understand the principles so in that part of the lesson this is this box that's kind of highlighted on your screen I'll just zoom in on it so you can see it a little bit better from what you'll notice here is this is kind of the purpose of why you're doing this and the information or the principle that underpins the lesson so this is kind of that theoretical information that the teacher would want to know prior to the lesson this is not the language that we're going to share with the students but it certainly does give the teacher kind of that background information so that is important to make sure you're aware of that and then what you'll notice to the right of that is it says explain the principle so that part there is in more common language when we're explaining the principle to the students that they is in that student friendly language so we can share that principle with them and that language with them so remember understand the principle is for for the teachers and that information for the teachers and then the explain the principle has it in student language they might reference that within our lesson where we could be referencing it during the share time after students have had a chance to apply their thinking and and come back and share that understanding so that's kind of page one or of the lesson and then from there which is also on page one there's this planned section and so in this part it says consider your children so in this section you're really thinking about the students needs and considering what do the students already know what do they need to learn next that just kind of gives you that background information and then the other part on there that's also on the front page is working with English language learners so these supports are always provided there you can see it in a little bit more clearly but these are suggestions for modifying or adjusting instruction to support the English language learners in our class and lots of good ideas that we could use with with everyone in the classroom so that's the way that that is laid out and set up so let's go to page two of the lesson this is what the second page looks like so remember we talked about that teach apply and share well here's the teaching component and I'll just kind of zoom in on this what you'll also notice is that there's always a visual of what the lesson could look like so as they are looking at the word cards and you put them in your pocket chart there's always that visual to help you out and so obviously there's some language provided in here and gives you a chance to think about how you might present this to the students but obviously it's up to you how how you're gonna and what language you might use to support the students as you make your way through the teach part of the lesson so there are step by step suggestions but again they are suggestions so you need to obviously modify it to work with the students that you're working with and be responsive to their needs but lots of good suggestions here to go with and then the next part you'll notice here is the apply share assess so in Apply Share Assessment that part of the lesson and I've kind of zoomed in on here the students are actually playing a game in this one and so here you'll notice that in the application piece they're actually going to be working in pairs or groups of three and this is where they get that chance to actually apply the principle in their own learning and construct their own thinking and have a chance to explore that that word principle from there then we're gonna bring the students back and we're gonna do that opportunity to share and you could create some kind of an anchor chart or class start and add some of the students new words to that chart and then also there's an assess opportunity so there's always suggestions for informal assessment and what you want to recognize and observe as students are working through the lesson if you want something more formal there is also online resources that has men assessment guide for each grade level that contains more formal performance-based systematic assessment tasks so you'll see those referenced here and obviously on the second bullet under assess you'll see that reference there so you could go online and get that more formal assessments in the online resources section and then from there you'll notice that there's a few other key pieces that are in the margin so there is the instructional procedures so these are it'll always tell you where to find the information for the instructional procedure should should you be new to that instructional procedure but you will see some of them repeat in in different lessons or come up again so students start to get experience with noticing parts or say in sort but it'll define it's like for example here page 32 you can get a detailed description of that actual instructional procedure and then the action takes those are the tags that we use to help students remember what to do during the apply section so as they were playing follow the path those were kind of the action tags or the actions that they were going to go through to be part of our take part in the application part of the lesson oh there it isn't a little bit too zoomed in a little bit so you can see it a little bit better okay and then what you'll Connecting the Learning notice on the back page of the lesson is it talks about connecting the learning across other contacts and so here's a chance for you to think about what this could look like in shared reading guided reading shared writing independent writing so again there's lots of ideas suggested there and there is a guided reading so you'll notice it referenced on the slide but usually the last couple of minutes of the guided reading lesson we use for a chance to do some word work and so this is where you could tailor that part of the lesson and revisit well in this case the prefix the idea of prefixes and in particular in this one re extends the learning so that's another piece that's included in each lesson and this is projects or finding examples or more games that are suggested for the students to extend their learning and then there's always a connection a home connection shared so here that they you know they can bring the board game home or and play the game of family or it it's always something that they can do to extend their learning after the lesson so kind of here's that another way I guess to look at everything we've sort of just uncovered or talked about but and really how the phonics spelling and word study looks both in text and out of text there's obviously lots of opportunities where we can expose students to working with a phonics and and spelling but the whole idea is that we want students to be able to connect their learning to reading and writing and that whole application piece so the phonics spelling word study really is based on inquiry it's not necessarily about telling students rules but it's about we want them to be notices about how words work how the language works and we really want them to be able to construct an understanding and they get to go you know obviously try out their thinking before they go apply it so we may have them turn and talk or try a few things out and that teach part of the lesson but then we want them to actually work with the concepts and and observe how they're doing with it how they apply it and make sure that they have a sound knowledge about the principles that we're trying to teach and then of course like I said reinforcing all those things in reading and writing so you'll see on this slide here all those opportunities not just in reading but on the far right of your screen all those opportunities in writing where phonics and word study could be embedded I'm going to spend the Components last couple of minutes I'm just kind of going through the components within the instructional context so you get a sense of what's actually included in phonics spelling a word study and if you have any questions again just please feel free to type them in the chat but what you'll notice is that the left of the screen has some of the resources there on the right you'll see them kind of taken out of the packaging and exactly what they look like they do come in a box so on the far right of the screen you'll be able to see there's some folders coming out of the box but it's just a box that everything is packaged in inside of there you get the comprehensive phonics spelling and word study guide so again that's that important key piece where you can look at the learning from pre-k to 8th the other thing is sing a song of poetry poems in those younger grades and there is a lot of poetry in there to help develop phonological awareness and teach about prints so that is included the ready resource is there in that brown box there in the image on the right and those are all the word cards cards picture cards and so on that you'll need for the lessons they're also available online so if you you know need to reprint them they're available there but obviously kind of frees up your time less prepping for you to do and then you can have those word cards ready to go the other thing is obviously the lesson so the phonics spelling word study lessons are all packaged by grade level and there's in the younger grades there's a hundred phonics spelling and word study lessons and then I think in grade three there's about a hundred and grade for grade three and four but one hundred and five or I might have on k2 300 grade for 105 around there anyways and then grade five and six I'm not sure but I'm assuming it will be around that 100 mark obviously as a teacher you may decide that you're not going to do all 100 lessons but and you can make those decisions but the nice thing is that they have provided inside of the phonics spelling and word study lesson book they've actually provided a suggested sequence so that as you make your way through a year but if you choose to maybe skip a lesson or you know revisit some as generative lessons obviously you know you can make those decisions to do that and there's more than enough lessons in there I just wanna make sure my microphone didn't go off and so again you can start with that sequence the first time you go through it or you can choose not to but it kind of just guides you in a sequence that would be you know kind of cover all the different areas of learning because you don't cover one of the nine areas and then move on to the other one you obviously jump around and things are gonna one lessons gonna build on the next and so you'll notice that in the suggested sequence and those are kind of all the pieces obviously there's a few other things like the alphabet linking chart and those kinds of things but the other thing you get is the access the online resources so there's all the teaching material need for lessons on there there's access as I said to the assessment so there's more formal performance-based assessment tasks by grade level that are on there and then you also have access to the game maker and there you can customize the games to include the words that you want and the how many words you want to include and so on so that's another thing that is available to you so hopefully that gives you a good sense of phonics spelling and word study I know we're almost at the end of our time so I'm happy to take any questions if there are any other webinars that you're interested in specific contexts about we do have some ones coming up in in next week and the few weeks after that so please register for those if you're interested if you want to look more closely at a sampler an actual hard copy of a sampler you can contact a rep to send you one I know I provided the web address at the beginning so you can always download a virtual one but if you'd prefer to see a hardcopy one you can contact them and they'll be able to send one out to you so you can look at it a little bit closer or any of the materials for that matter so if there's something you want to look at a little bit closer they would be happy to help you out the one thing I would encourage you to do if you haven't had a chance is to join the fountain symphony literacy community it's free there's lots of great stuff on there there's webinars there's daily lipid study guides if you're leading staff or colleagues through any of their resources like the literacy continuum there's lots of great resources on there so just know that that's available and you can go to found some fennel comm and like I said you just joined for free but lots of great benefits bye-bye being a part of that if you do want to look at a hardcopy sampler please feel free to reach out to the sales rep in your territory I've put their information up if you're a consultant at a school board or we're kind of a district office if you contact the sales rep in your area they'll be able to link you up with the account executive who can answer any of your questions or send you some samples of anything you might want to look a little bit further at so thank you for your time today and if there are any questions I'd be happy to try to answer them for you so please post them in the chat you if there are no questions thanks again for joining us and thanks for taking time out of your day to be here today you will get access to the recording and that will be sent out to you enjoy your evening if you have any questions and you'd prefer to ask them in a couple of minutes I will hang on the line for a little bit so feel free to stay on if you would like if not thank you again
