Introduction well good afternoon everyone it's Patty Henderson here the mass marketing manager for Pearson I wanted to welcome you to our Pearson meth all GTA online information session and we're about to begin I thought I would do a little bit of housekeeping first the webinar is roughly about 3035 minutes and typically by the time I reach the end I will have answered many of your questions but maybe not all so what I'm going to recommend is this we have everyone in lesson mode today because we are recording this webinar for those who can't attend and for you if you'd like to look at it again later what I'll recommend is that if you write down your questions and if you still have them at the end of the webinar and you can certainly we'll open up the floor and s and then or you have the option of putting your questions in the chat box that you have available to you as well and we will answer them at the end so welcome to our webinar before I begin I About Pearson Mythology thought I'd give you a little bit of background on a Pearson mythology for those of you who may not know about it we have it in English and in French and so Pearson mythology is a set of K to 8 print and digital resources that it's rooted in academic research and best practices co-created with over a thousand classroom teachers and consultants across Canada and underpinned by a practical Canadian learning progression mythology helps you to know where your students are and define next steps for growth engage students at all levels while building confidence in their math skills instill a love of love and joy for math through rich fund of math activities and stories support job embedded professional learning for teachers and support French Immersion solo pathology is adapted not translated so the language doesn't get in the way of the math on the screen you're going to see in the middle our research and professional learning resources and many of these are going to be familiar to you already from taking shape to what to look for teaching math with meaning as well as elementary and middle school mathematics you also have math success for all which is our research document that we have created based on all the academic research that we did great at the very beginning of metal and then in the middle of the time on the top of that section you'll see a a purple cover and it's called the pearson mathematics learning progression and that's our developmental continuum of maths understanding and it helped us create mythology and we'll talk a little bit more about that as we proceed through the webinar on the right hand side you'll see the print resources that were built upon this strong combination of research and professional learning we have the grade 1 & 2 activity kits in English and in French we have 72 math little books from k23 also in English and in French and today we're going to be talking about grade 1 and great to mythology CA when we first started doing Math Teaching Journey our research around mythology I'm thinking about doing a piece that that lives online the research told us that the math teaching journey it'll be no surprise to you and that it's a time-consuming multi-step process starting with long-range planning to short-term planning teaching and preparing to teach through assessing reporting and professional learning and knowing that that road is time consuming a multi-step process whenever you create a online platform you really want it to shorten that journey somewhat and make it a little bit easier and that is why we created mythology CA so it's Mathology CA proposition is to simplify and enhance that math teaching journey through smart use of technology it helps you streamline planning teaching assessment and professional learning so those stops on that journey and for those of you who already know our print resources whether it's the activity kit or the math little books math all do not see a really does seamlessly integrate those components and you'll see what that looks like in a minute so what is mythology ta it's a simple online tool for teachers containing rich maths activities and pedagogical supports and it's powered by five.hoorah functionalities search Klan teach assess and track and professional learning and you can see that those are the stops on that on that math teaching journey and it's all aligned to cleaning curricula and our Pearson learning progression when I walk you through math all GTA today know that every province has its own version of Mythology IPA with your curriculum built-in I'll be working from the Ontario one today but know that each one of you has your own version based on your curriculum and with no further ado I thought I'd take you for a walk through mythology ta so on my screen and Home Page on your screen you should see the home page for mythology CA and when we first started doing our research for this product we know that teachers spend time lots of time searching for really great math lessons to help engage their students and so one of the things we wanted to do when we create mythology ta is to really help teachers find lessons that are age-appropriate development developmentally appropriate and right on target for your curriculum and that is what mythology ta is it contains a hundred lessons per grade in grade one and grade 2 now all aligned to your own curriculum and the Pearson Canada learning progression so when you have that many really great lessons in there you still have to be able to search for those great lessons and so we've provided a variety of ways to search for great lessons one of the first ways you can search is search by curriculum so I'm going to click on that so inside Search by Curriculum search by curriculum you have the ability to search by grade one as well as great two now and again the curriculum that I have here is Ontario but each what each province has its own the truck the top you'll see the strands from the curriculum and below that are the overall expectations from your curriculum when you click on one of the overall expectations you'll get a drop-down menu and that drop down menu shows you all the expectations they're specific ones underneath that overall expectation and to the left of each one of those you'll see a little search tool when you click on that it will bring up all of the math little books and lessons that support that specific expectation so you can see we've narrowed down our search quite a bit you can narrow it down even further by searching by grade or even by type of whether it's an activity or you might just want to look for the mass little books they're there as well and by strand so again you can narrow that search down to exactly what you need using the curriculum as your guide you may also want to search by the Search by Progression Pearson Canada learning progressions that again is our developmental continuum of math understanding that shows where students are across k23 and where they might where you might want to take them in next steps for growth and so I'm going to click on search by progression and across the top you'll see the strands from the curriculum the big ideas in gray so for instance this one's looking at numbers tell us how many and how much and under each one of those big ideas will be a conceptual thread so I'm going to take a look at applying the principles of counting for example when I click on that you'll see our learning progression come to life you'll be able to see exactly where students are and where you want to take them next because this is a slider that goes up and back and so say we have students that know says the number name sequence is forward and backward from a given number what lessons might support that when you click on the icon again you'll see this is the lesson that comes up that supports that concept and so you can search by curriculum you can also search by the Pearson Canada learning progression one other way you might want to search is just for keywords in math so I'm gonna grate into the search bar in tan top and type in counting for instance and do a search and when I do that search you'll see that there's 196 results found for skip counting that's quite a bit so you can also then narrow that search down by grade we have in here K 1 and 2 by type so that could be an activity a consolidation activity a little book an intervention a plan as well as math everyday activity and also by strands that really does narrow that down to exactly what you're looking for as well there's one other thing that you can search for in mythology and it's at the Search by Plan top and it's called plan so I'm going to start here we knew that when we developed mythology we wanted to provide you with some support around planning for your week your year and this is where you find that and so I'm going to go into all plans and we have two options here that that help you with your planning and you'll see them show up here in a minute we have the option to create a new plan and I'll show you that in a moment but you also have some built in plans that that we've made for you typically when teachers adopt a new resource it's really helpful to have a plan already in place to see where how all these pieces fit together and what that looks like and so we wanted to give you some ideas for a really great plan to get you going knowing that as you grow with the resources you'll want to start including your own plans as well so I've gone down to some sample plans that we have here and I'm going to go into great to sample long-range pathway option 2 so we have several options depending on how you like to start your year down the left-hand side you'll see the the months they're actually weeks repeating patterns September of counting increasing decreasing patterns we're right around here right now and when you click on that it will bring up the math little books and the activity cards that support that that week that you might be in so being able to have a plan already in place is really helpful if you go into the next week you'll see number of relationships and we'll bring up a few more of the math little books and the activity cards so that's one way of looking at planning if you want to use that plan as is at the top rating corner it says use sample plan and that will be in that plan to your desktop so you can use that right away for those of you once you get used to using that ecology dossier you may think you know what I want to start creating my own plans and so when I click on create new plan you'll get two options you can use an existing plan so that could be one of the ones that we have and you build on top of it or you might want to start with a blank one so I'm going to start with a blank plan I'm gonna name it where you can name it anything you like and you hit save and when you hit save you'll see that you can put put this lesson in a folder it could be October plans it could be first week of school you can even anything you like down the right-hand side you'll see we have a collection of favorite lessons whether it's math little books or or lessons and simply drag that lesson over you can write a comment about that lesson this was the the first lesson that I've used and it works great I'm going to keep that you might want to drag a little book over as well and you have the option I'm going to scroll down a little bit to add a non mythology lesson so anything that has a URL you can add in here and it will gather that lesson in here as well so anyone who has Google Google or Microsoft classrooms and you have your favorite lessons attached there all you need is a URL and you can put that in your plan as well there's some really great things you can do with this plan once you've built it I'm going to click on this top button here curriculum coverage so when we built the plans that I showed you first they're already built once those are built for 100% curriculum coverage and that's probably a great place for you to start as you're creating your own plans you probably want to make sure that you have that curriculum coverage there and so this will allow you to see where the gaps might be as you're building your plan so that you can fill those gaps the other thing that we've done in the background as you're building your plan we're gathering a material list that you can print out that help support that that plan you can actually share your plan so this gives you a chance to co-teach you can share your plan with anyone that also has a mythology dossier license so it's really great for teen teaching within a school or if a district has a license it's really great for your planning within a district as well and at any time you can export this plan into a document as well so that's a quick run-through of planning to help support you in your use of Mythology dot CA I thought I would take you on a quick tour next of what a lesson looks like so Lesson Tour we're back to our desktop and on my desktop I have three lessons pinned here I'm going to go into the one that's in the middle and so when we're looking at a lesson for an activity it has a very standard set up so it makes it really easy for you to use every lesson has an about which I'll walk you through it details which is where the the lesson resides there's assessment opportunities as well as related resources and on the far right hand side we have a section called professional learning and this is where we have some great videos that will help support you know I'll show you what those look like in a moment so we're going to start with the about part of the lesson so when you went in the into about it of course tells you a little bit about that lesson for those of you who may not have math as your first teachable or your your background that content background is really important and helpful so that is there as well the focus for this lesson the curriculum connections as well as exactly where you are with this lesson on the Pearson learning progression you can see here this lesson is a rich one it actually unpacks two big ideas from it from the curriculum and it highlights in blue exactly where you are on that Pearson kind of learning progression so that's the about when you get into details you'll see that we have a lesson laid out here it has a very standard look and feel for those of you who have the print activity cards this looks very much like the teacher cart so you'll be used to what this looks like so in the top left hand corner you'll see the Strand from your curriculum the materials that you need for this activity any of your line or assessment masters are here as well and they're linked directly you don't have to go looking for them we have them here in PDF and in word so you made like this assessment master exactly as is you can print that off but we know that many teachers like to be able to change these things based on the students you have in front of you each year and so this is the very same master is there in Word as well which allows you to modify it as I scroll down you'll see that we have a standard three part lesson with before what to do during some great ideas on how to differentiate the consolidation understanding where your students are in this activity and if they they understood what is happening in that activity what to look for so these are the in the moment assessment prompts that you can use as you're doing this activity and across the bottom you'll see probing questions so as students are doing this activity that this one most students will do in pairs you can see them doing the activity but you really do want to uncover the thinking and that's happening and having some good probing questions to do that is really helpful and so we've created these probing questions across the bottom as I scroll down you'll see that we also have that these activities captured as images and these are the activity cards from our activity kits that you can project or print and so I'm going to share with you what those look like so this is the teacher card and this is exactly the lesson I just showed you about it in a print format and that you can print off if you like and you can also project this if you want to it has a same structure with the before during and after the probing questions the materials that you need on the back is really where this activity comes to life for you as a teacher on the back you'll see something that says helping students to progress what you might see or hear and next steps and so this this is again our Pearson Canada learning progression come to life within an activity and you'll see there are six boxes here and these are things that you will see as the students are doing this activity and what you'd like to be able to do is help them progress from left down to right in their math understanding in this activity and you have some prompts here some in the moment prompts on next steps if you have a student that might be stuck in this activity and so this is really your on-the-fly assessment that helps you see where your students are but more importantly the next steps to help them progress in that activity we also have Student Cards the student cards here that you can project and use as you want each student card has two sides there's an easy side and a more difficult side and both of those are captured here and you can actually print these off so for those of you that might have the activity kit this is your chance to print extra cards should you lose them we know that that doesn't happen of course but in case it does you can print these off and the last one that's here we have completed one of the activities so you can see what that activity looks like completed now one of the things that we did when we did our research for mythology ta and we talked about professional learning support and you know that many teachers do not have the chances that we used to maybe ten years ago to have as many professional learning opportunities where you leave your school get the day off and so we wanted to be able to provide some in the moment professional learning that you can access at any time as you have mythology dossier and so we've created two different types of videos that help support you in the moment that the top one here it's called a learning highlights video this one comes with every single lesson that you have with in mythology ta and it's short it's like one and a half minutes I'll walk you through it and it supports you on what is this app could be about why am i doing it and what made I see as the students are doing it so that's video support it's really quite helpful there and we also have what's called a learning connections video it's longer and it takes a longer view around the big idea from the curriculum this one is something that you might want to touch on at the beginning of a unit and then dip in and out of throughout your unit so we're going to start with the learning highlights video first and it's it's short so I'm going to play the whole video for you let's look mostly at this pattern there are two four six eight files which are the numbers and the skip counting by two sequence some students may see the sequence as repeated addition for example 2 2 plus 2 is 4 2 plus 2 plus 2 is 6 and so on look at the patterns on the student card ask students how they can use the pattern rule to find how many tiles would be in the next term for example if the fourth term has 7 tiles the fifth term would have 7 tiles plus 2 more or 9 tiles how many tiles with the sixth term have four students who need more support relating increasing patterns to skip counting a repeated addition referred to patterning and algebra intervention activity 3 so you can see there that it's a short video just in time and it really does help you as you understand this activity and the purpose of it I mentioned we have a second type of video we have it here there's 13 in total they're called the learning connections video I'm going to play maybe the first minute so you get a sense of how this video helps support unpacking the big ideas from the curriculum patterns are everywhere even at the fair what patterns do you see in this video we'll explore the learning pathway for the big idea regularity and repetition form patterns that can be generalized and predicted mathematically aligned in Pearson's learning progression several mythology resources such as this grade 2 little book provide opportunities for students to identify sort and classify attributes and patterns as well as to investigate repeating an increasing and decreasing patterns one important concept that supports the big idea they can find patterns mathematically students begin sorted according other in shape grade your students asserts science shape material or impatient number or color another important concept that's important yeah so you can see there that the big idea videos the learning connexion videos will unpack a big idea and he'll get at the conceptual threads that are within it so again you can start with that give you probably at the beginning of a unit and you may want to dip in and dip out as you see fit so that is the details part of our lesson Assessment I'm going to go next to assessment so when we have spent time looking at the back of that teacher card and we talked about the fact that every activity has a chance for you to see what your students are doing and help them with next steps this is that same back of the card reproduced in a digital form and we wanted to make sure that it was easy for you to do your on that fly assessment and so this this feature allows you to build a class put your students in that class and as you're watching your students do this activity you can actually drag them into where where you see they are in that activity so it's one way of identifying where your students are in that activity but one of the other things that allows you to do and this is the most important part is to to have those next steps to help that student progress and so let's take the first box for example we are looking at students who identify increasing patterns but struggles to reproduce them concretely we have three students that as they as you were doing this activity are in this spot and you want to be able to help them rate at the bottom of that box you'll see there's a next steps so when I click on that you'll see there are some in the moment next steps that really help you help that student get unstuck in that activity and help them progress for their along when we get into the second box for instance we have students that are identifying and reproducing increasing patterns can creat Li but miss counts on counting the number of tiles in each term this does happen and we have two students that are in here the next steps are again in the moment and write on the page so this is that one of the easiest ways to help you with that assessment and capture where your students are the next piece that you're going to want to do once you've done these activities perhaps you're getting close to report card time then you would like to know where are my students after I've done these activities against the curriculum and ten maybe you might be getting close to parent-teacher time and and so we have a section at the top called analytics we're going to go into that next we'll look at class analytics Class Analytics first and we are going to go into grade two so everything that you just did with that lesson is captured in the background so you can see where your students are with each one of these lessons you'll see here we're in activity new and these are the lessons that you've completed so far with your class you can see that there you have students that are in progress which is great you have students that are on track and if you have some students that maybe are still in this first box and they need a little bit more help you'll get a red red circle there and it tells you that it's time to go back maybe with that concept and give a little bit more support so this is your on-the-fly really great way of taking a look at where you are with your students at any given time that's your class view when you go into student view this it could be that it's a parent-teacher night and you would like to be able to share where one of your students is with parents in a very visual way we're looking at one of your students in this class named violet mmm and you can see where a violet is with each one of these activities that you've already completed you can see that some are in progress right on track here's one where some some more work is needed and so what I'm going to show you next is where that more work and help those next steps are located Related Resources and that's in related resources so this is the last section of this lesson you can see here that we have mini lessons and so these mini lessons really do help you now that you know where your students are to group them and help them with many lessons that support where they are in their understanding and we have one that's on rate typically we have two intervention mini lessons as well as it as an extension so when we go into on grade and you have students identifying and reproducing increasing patterns numerically when I click on that you'll see that there's a mini lesson that helps support those students at anytime you can print that mini lesson off you might have some students that need some extra support for instance if a student's having difficulty identifying the pattern rule when you click on that you have a mini lesson specifically to support students that are struggling in that area and again this is a lesson that you can print off you can see you have a second intervention mini lesson as well as extensions for students that are ready for a little bit more and so those extras are there you also have possible misconceptions so for instance in this case students the student doesn't think it's necessary to include the start number and a pattern rule what happens there that in the moment support again is right there at your fingertips in the what to do after a lesson there's support here for you as well so you could complete into this lesson what are some next steps you can take in class hmm pardon me so here are some ideas that help extend this lesson and we have next steps at home so if you have a great Parent Connection here are some things that you can print and save and send home just to support your students and their parents as well below that we have a word wall so that's great for building vocabulary and at the bottom this is looking very much like our Pearson Canada learning progression because it's on a slider that goes up and back you can see that we have related lessons that support that concept some that are on grade below grade and above grade and you have access to going there next as well so that is in the related resources I'm going to take you back to favourites for Favourites a moment I spoke briefly about it before when you go into favorites you've seen that we have a lot of lessons here that you can work with sometimes you're going to find one that you're going to use again that you love it could be a math little book it could be an activity and you have a chance as you're doing that activity to put a heart to beside it to make it a favorite and this is where your favorites are stored so when we first started developing math on GTA we did a lot of classroom observations and we know that as teachers are planning they'll come in and place your your lesson for the day on your desk and so very much like a desktop these lessons can be pinned to your homepage and so you can see I have three lessons here that are pinned when I go back to my home page you had them here and so Math Little Book you've done all your planning you're ready for your day and all the lessons that you are planning to to work with today are right there on your desktop so the last piece of the puzzle I wanted to share with you today is the math little book and what type of support you have in math how do you not see as well so I'm going to go into the best surprise mmm when we're looking at the math books there's a lesson plan here as well there is an about a details as well as related resources in the about it talks a little bit about the book what great it is wet strand here looking at we have the reading level should you need that and that is the countess in canal reading level we have the math focus for this math little book as well as the curriculum connections and at the bottom exactly where you are in that Pearson Canada learning progression this one looks at once some other big idea but it unpacks two concepts within it so it's a really rich math little book that's the about when we go into details this gives you a little bit more information about that math little book but one of the best parts about what's in math I'll do not say with math little books is the ability to to project this math a little book and have it read aloud so I'm going to go into the link to this little book and you'll see that you have a read and listen which we'll go into there's a short triad activity that works great on a whiteboard as well so when I go in to read and listen for those of you who may have the print resources if you have them and you flip over each print resource there's a QR code on the back and a URL which links you to the exactly the same spot where I'm at today the reading lesson part is great it gives you a chance to send that link home and maybe they have have it for a home use it safety from sending those I'm at little box home for sure but if you have a Yahtzee yeah but the chance to have this as front of class use so I'm going to get into one page you can see what the read aloud is about crabs we're having that best birthday ever says Ethan it's not over yet replies Krabs your mother says I could give you one more surprise hooray Wow what is it asks Emma you'll have to wait and see answers Gramps please tidy up and then we'll hop in the car and so each page of the maps a little book is read aloud and in both English and in French for those who made and be interested in French immersion and that's available as well just below that you'll see there's ideas are around the first read and then when we get to related resources this is where you're going to find some after reading support as well as all of your line masters that support this math little book in one place and again you can see that we have eight of them for this math little book and they are here in PDF and in word against that you can edit them you can see the related lessons or the related math little books and again the slider is really helpful so we have some resources here that tackle that same concept in math but it's below grade and we have some here that are on grade as well so that could be your next book and it really does help you personalize the math little books based on where your students are on that learning progression and the last piece would be of course the professional learning a section on the right hand side you can see we're unpacking that same learning connections video this time so that is a very very fast walk through of methodology dot CA I have a few more slides left to go and then we're going to take some questions so as a review Review mythology ta is carefully curated curriculum focused lessons we have grade one and grade two available in English at grade one we have 101 math lessons from the activity kit we have 34 mapped little books from k2 one we have the Pearson Canada learning progression in there as well as a hundred plus professional learning videos at grade two we have one hundred and eighty-five plus math since from the activity kit we have 38 math little books from grade 1 and 2 we had the K to 3 learning progression as well as 160 professional learning videos for those of you who are interested in French immersion we have mythology CA currently in beta and what I mean by beta it is currently being built we are putting lessons in it right now and once those lessons are inside methodology CA that's roughly around the end of November we're going to be looking at some free trials there so you can have a chance to to see what mythology CA looks like and just know that we have Grade three coming as well so at this point I typically get asked Pricing well what does methodology dot c8 cost and so you can see here we have a variety of options we have a one-year subscription which is per teacher at 140 we also have a five-year subscription you get roughly a 5% discount which is 665 and the best news of all all the content that we have in mythology CA is available on that license so right now we have grade one in grade two so a pure grade one teacher you have access to all of those lesson plans if you are one two teacher you have access so every time we add new grades in technology CA it doesn't cost you more it's the same license so that's great news and the last screen I'll share with you as we're answering questions we have some great support in every province for questions around pricing and we do have right now some additional 5 and 10% discounts on math little ebooks or activity kits if you buy methodology CA so if you have questions around that you're interested in it I'm going to put up the information around who you could talk to but one more thing I want to share with you before we do that mm-hmm this was a fast walk through we had a Free Preview lot of ground to cover and you probably want to see it more we have a 45 day free preview underway and so right on this page you're gonna see something that says ET r dot mythology dot CA that is your free preview 45 days go in try a lesson with your class if you like and see what it's like and we know that most teachers who have tried it they love it but you need to need to give it a try so that free preview is available to you when we follow up with you with an email with the recording for today we'll also have information on that free preview for you so I'm going to open up the floor to questions but as I'm doing that I'm gonna put on Chat Questions the information if you have more questions and these are your local Pearson folks that you can talk to so I have a colleague who's been gathering up your chat questions and she's sending them to me so give me a moment here and I will see what the questions are so from Carolyn are there any mythology mentors that can be contactees Lee when questions arise yes you know what I think the best way to do that Carolyn is to contact your local Pearson rep and they can put you in touch with someone who can give you a little bit more support or tell you who's local who's also using it so that might be helpful mythology at CAA I recovered the cost there and so you can see that it's 140 dollars for a one year and 66 65 for the five year and and the question around the advantage of using mythology ta if you already have the kids and a couple things there that's a fantastic question and you have access to the math little books which is there a really rich resource and you get a chance to use those along with it the planning tool is really important it shows you how to plan using both of those and I would say that the assessment as well is really quite helpful and it really does short net that period of time using assessment so those are some of the areas that you really do get extra support in with mythology Otzi a katie is there a way I can access all masters in one PDF instead of going to each lesson yes we actually have each of these line masters on our website and we'll send you that information and it has them all in one place if you just want to print them off in one place you can do that and is there a little book that goes with all lessons so we do recommend pretty much a little yeah you know what when I'm thinking about it that there there is a math little book that supports each one of these quite well when I went into the related resources across the bottom you'll see the related math little books as well as lessons that support that lesson and so that's where you can find those as well so en are there any other questions or have I are there any questions I have not answered that you would like to ask and what I'm going to say is that I will be online for the next five minutes if you want to ask me any questions I'm going to hang out here so feel free to ask ask away and for those of you that don't have any questions thanks for coming today all of you we really appreciate the time that you're spending with us doing this and because we know you have a busy day so thanks for being with us and again I'll be here for the next five minutes if you have any questions thanks again you
