so just a little bit of housekeeping first as Kim's mentioned if you have a chance to introduce yourself in the chat that would be great I'm Miranda and I'll be guiding you through this webinar for the next 45 or so minutes and Kim you're hearing her in the background and she'll be monitoring monitoring the chat for me and just because I won't be able to do both things at once so we're gonna really strongly encourage you to chat and we want to hear what you have to say any thoughts you have any questions you have as we go along Kim's mentioned that if you hover over the bottom that your chat option will come up and to make sure that you've adjusted yours to all panelists and attendees that way everyone can see each other so sometimes it says all panelists we just need to make sure that it says all panelists and attendees so we're going to work our way through subtraction and really focus in on different models that you could use and different problem types different tools that you may use along the way I know that these are very different times and so we're gonna talk a little bit about how you might leverage some of these materials and some of these tools if you are interacting with your class from home or virtually and just thinking about different ways to reuse some of the materials that you'll have access to so take a second to think about this picture and do you see any subtraction situations let's use this as a test if you see any subtraction in this image just go ahead and quickly put yes in the chat if you don't you can go ahead and put no and I'll give you ten seconds great people are just all putting yes in the chat yes yes yes yes yes okay fantastic so did you see things like takeaway situations like the fans leaving the top row so how many fans are left when once those top four people leave did you see other takeaway situations like how many fans are not wearing red shirts it seems like this is a crowd of blue team supporters but maybe you thought about it as a compare situation how many fan how many more fans are wearing blue compared to those that are wearing red or how many fewer females than males you might have been looking at that piece and I'm sure there are many more that you've thought of and today we're really gonna focus in on the difference between the take away situations and compare situations as we go through but likely no and when we're teaching students from k23 it's really hard to talk about subtraction without considering addition so as we go through we will mention pieces of addition as we talk about subtraction and we're going to use the learning progression as our way to guide us through some of our thinking this image comes from one of our mythology little books it's a grade one book called Canada's oldest sports and it's all about lacrosse in Canada and so I mentioned using the learning progression then the learning progression is just a way to think about how students develop in their understanding of particular topics it's organized by strand and then it and then by big idea and then you'll have a series of conceptual threads and indicators and I'll show you what that looks like the learning progression was developed in Canada by dr. Lynn McGarvey at the University of Alberta so all the research has really taken into account loss of different learning progressions as well as Canadian curriculum so it's going to reflect the curriculum that you see in your province with your students so today we're really going to focus in on that conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction so we're going to look at how it develops over time between k23 and we'll begin with this idea of modeling those add to and take from situations sitting in quantities up to 10 so we have Scott here and he works at a grocery store and this is very timely today because he's restocking you've got some empty shelves with berries and he's getting some a cart ready for his customers and they want five cartons of blueberries but he's wondering how many cartons of raspberries you might use so take a second to just reflect and think about what your students might be doing and also what Scott might be doing in his head to try and figure out how many raspberries he needs for his customers you how might he model these add to situations or even a take from situation when he's working with that quantity of 10 so he using a 10 frame might be one way that he might have been thinking about it and you can see him visualizing that 10 frame in his head so as you take a look at this ten frame I want you to think about what that add to situation or the take from situation might look like do you have students that might think about adding on to find that total they might put in the raspberries and then add on one two three four five more blueberries to find out how many blueberry cartons he needs or do you have students that start with the whole they put all ten they fill it up with blueberry and then they trade out and they take away so that they can fill up with some raspberries so thinking about ten frames using both addition and subtraction and knowing their relationship together can really help students consider how to model those add to and take from situations now these ten frame cards are available in our activity kit and as we go through I'm gonna move between the activity cards and the little books and I'll show you how to access all of those in the next coming weeks and months with all of these activities we also have line masters to accommodate and extend that thinking so I want you to take a moment to think about these two particular line masters how might you use them to extend or to accommodate the learning of the students in your class knowing that these two are available in mythology CA I'll give you a chance to just put that into the chat pod how might you use either the berry game card or the line master on the right with how many berries you so this is Kim here so you might want to think about how light you use it when you're back in class you might want to think about how might you use it now either way it'd be great to have some of your ideas you you so we have one suggestion might be used at a math Center thanks or another suggestion might be the line master nine could be used as an exit ticket that's great these are some good ways to think about using these activities we're gonna give you access to these line masters and you're gonna see opportunities to either grab on to some of these to share with some of your students that might be working on making ten so you could have you could play the very card game and for this particular game you'd have two people playing the game where you'd flip over cards where you have the berries and you'd add the sum and then you would decide which partner has more berries or maybe you sent home some of the line masters to consider thinking about how many baskets you might be working on for subtraction or for addition and Miranda both Jennifer and Diana had the same idea that you were just talking about creating these great cards and maybe in ranek you talked about PDFs versus Word documents absolutely so when we go into mythology I'm gonna show you how to access all of these as word and as PDF all of them will be modifiable so if it makes sense for your class to either adjust the numbers either up or down or you'll see there are some extension berries very cards where the numbers will go a little bit higher to have your students work with bigger numbers we also have all of this available in French so all of our stories our little books have been adapted for French classrooms and they also have the line masters available for French classes as well currently the mythology little books are available for grade 1 on mythology CA and we'll walk you through how to access that later on so let's take a look at a toy store you've got a shelf where kids can spend money and how might this help you or your students to explore subtraction situations I'll give you a second to put in some thoughts into the chat you you you so diana is saying making change like having our total amount in deciding what can be bought and Kim is saying if you tell them that they have $10 they can subtract the items they may want to buy awesome it's like you read my mind so what if I told you you have $20 so this would be working with whole numbers up to 20 if I told you you have $20 and you could only buy one item what would you buy and how much money would you have left so this comes from one of our grade two activities sitting in our activity kit and you have access to that digitally as well so we could use a part part whole mat so think about this idea of being able to use 20 as the whole and identifying one item that you might buy in this scenario I've selected the Train so how might students use the part part whole not to solve the problem so Christina put in an idea here about they can use some of those ticket items for open-ended math tasks too and so maybe what are some ideas of using those open-ended tasks with this part part whole Matt absolutely mm-hmm so what's really nice about this part part whole Matt is that you have the ability to think about both addition and subtraction again at the same time you can start with the whole and take away the part in order to find the other part or you can start with the part you know the Train and add on until you get to that whole having kids work with this part part whole Matt really flexibly allows them to think about both addition and subtraction at the same time so the second part of our learning progression here is the ability to use symbols and equations to represent addition and subtraction problems so at the very beginning students were thinking about modeling and now they're going to be transitioning into the use of symbols and equations to represent both those situations so here we see both the subtraction and addition opportunity this comes from one of our activity cards I've just taken a second to increase what would the main part of the activity be but what other questions might us Christina mentioned that you might go a little more open and have them play around with the different items that you could purchase but what other questions could you ask so maybe we minute and quickly scan the type of task that is a suggestion when students are working together but are there other questions you're thinking that might also be helpful for your students so LMC is 20 dollars and ask students to pick two items Oh excellent so you'd have two parts and then a third unknown part which would be really great to extend some of that thinking with the part part whole Matt what if I gave you some other toy options you might have some maybe it's a clothing store that you go to and you're purchasing items or maybe it's an equipment store these line masters are all available that we've talked about both in PDF and in Word and with the toy money so that might be something that you send home for parents that might not have cash on them these days or a pile of coins they might not have a coin jar or a coin collection like I have going on so they might want to use some of those coins to really play this kind of store game at home and they cannot price tags onto their own items so this teacher card like we mentioned oh sorry go ahead I just gonna say Miranda it's great people are putting in some suggestions because everyone either currently has access or after this will show you where you can have access to all these things and so it gives you ideas of yes this is one idea on the teacher card but here your colleagues are giving you some maybe some other ideas you might not have thought about on your own so thanks to those that are giving some great ideas for each other fantastic so comes from our teacher card here you see some key ideas for what you might do in a classroom as well as assessment supports when you think about subtracting money some behaviors that you might be looking for as you get back into the classroom and these would come double sided so the ability to adapt this for some of the students in your class that might need a little bit of accommodation that option is always there for you so let's think about comparing when you think about comparing I've used an image from our the one of our little books the great dog sled race and this comes from a grade two book where they're tracking the wind speed over morning noon and night so what might you compare and how could you model it we'll give you a second to put some ideas into the chat so I think we're still on the some people are still on the money thing and some people are starting to work on this one Miranda so that's great so people can read over some of those ideas if they're helpful to you great take them on and it's great that you're continuing those ideas putting in the chat pod absolutely especially with comparing money is a great way to think about comparing anything else you might do to compare what we have up here some of that wind speed mhm ELISA is saying you can compare the wind speed throughout one day absolutely so for me I thought about the difference between morning to sunset so if I look at just day one what's the difference between the wind speed in the morning versus the men's wind speed at sunset and I might use a number line I might plot my sunset at my morning on the number line and then look at the difference between 29 and 38 I'm using a number lines very powerful to help students compare and being able to go over the ten for something like this when they're using 38 minus 29 can be really challenging but when you label them on a number line it can be much more visually it can be a lot more helpful to see it visually because that can help them more easily compare they can either count up or count back to be able to see the difference between the sunset and the morning and so here this part of our learning progression really focuses on the difference between modeling and symbolizing those different problem types today we've been focusing on compare and the takeaway problems are the separate problems but we've also talked about part part whole situations and I'm sure you can find some join situations as well as we go throughout this ability to relate addition and subtraction as an inverse operation is real powerful here for those students that find it challenging to count back they can also count forward to be able to find the difference just the same again we've got line masters here to accommodate and to extend the learning whether it be that they need a hundred chart to help them with their thinking or a number line or maybe they need some challenges to go in and do some more problems and show that our thinking in that way so do you see any addition and subtraction problems here all together before I go in to show you where you can access some of these so first of all if you do see them let's see some yeses yeah and these are their iPod let's start with the yeses once you see a subtraction question just type that yes in and then go back and what is that subtraction question what is the situation you are seeing and let's see all the different situations that maybe some of our students might also see so we see team scores how much more money do we have to raise and another one says yeah the difference between the score with its total money received number of people or excellent so here it's a grave three book called the street party and they are throwing a street party with all their neighbors and they've split all the kids into teams and their first two I think it's 500 wins the award for their street party so they've raised money from each home and the cost of the party is gonna cost them seven hundred dollars and they are gonna make some donations to the hospitals so getting kids to engage in something like this really reminds them of things like a school play day or things like that that they might be familiar with so getting kids to think about addition and subtraction problems here on the left-hand side we had someone mentioned that you could either compare the scores or you could find out how many you can include how many points team willow had and here students really can focus on that idea of commutativity this property that it doesn't matter what order you add the numbers in you'll always get the same answer but when we think about it in subtraction when we think about how much more money we need that we can donate to the hospital sometimes students think about the community commutativity property being able to apply in subtraction and so this is something that we really work on in order to get them to better have a better understanding of what the hole is what the part is and what the unknown part is in this case the donation to the hospital having them use a property like the inverse operations will really help them solidify that understanding and so here we talk about the end of that learning progression where students start to think about properties of addition and subtraction and they're able to apply them really fluidly and and flexibly and so they're able to think about that can be commutativity property in addition and know that it does apply in subtraction so I've shown you some of these activities here that come from our little books and from our activity cards as well as the laminated line masters for some of the models or the representations that you might use such as a 10 frame apart part whole mat or number lines whether they be closed or no open as they relate to our learning progression and so we'll take a deep we'll take a look into mythology ta to see how you can access some of these activities mythology is a platform that houses all these little books and the activity cards and it provides you with some really key functionalities the ability to search easily to plan to teach to assess and track and some professional learning so I'll go into there and I want you to keep in mind some of the things that you could leverage as you are at home and you're connecting virtually with your students so in here right now the mythology platform is a teacher tool for grade 1 and 2 lessons currently there are K books in here as well that I'll show you how to access and then there are grade 1 lessons in mythology and you're welcome to sign up for that and I'll show you how to register for some open access during this time of us being at home so we'll start with the book that's 10 and so here you have the ability to search for books or for cards just by using keywords so maybe I might search for money and see what comes up and I'll have some results this might look familiar at the toy store sitting in here and I can narrow it down to grade 1 or grade 2 and I can also narrow down by activity or if it's a book that I'm looking for and also by strand I may also go in by curriculum you might know exactly what you're trying to address these days and so you might go in by curriculum go into perhaps operational sense go into add and subtract money amounts to ten and you'll have some results you can access right now Maranda can you talk about the different curriculums for the different provinces absolutely so currently I'm in the Ontario teacher platform but when you register you can register with your individual provinces and this will adapt the curriculum to the province to reflect what you need so right now I'm in grade 1 but I could also be in grade 2 and that will change depending on what province you're in alright so when I search I can decide that I love lesson and I can heart it or make it one of my favorites and so I've got some favorite lessons here and you've noticed that I've pinned a few of them to my front page here I have some of my lessons pinned to the front page so when I go into my little book at quick glance you'll see what the books all about what the focus is going to be as far as mathematics goes and the tag that's going to be in here we've also attached a reading level to it in case you want to send some of these stories home and I'll show you where some of these stories will be you've got curriculum links as well as the processes that are being addressed by reading a story like this as well as the piece of the learning progression that it's working on in this case the model modelling add to and take from situations that we talked about earlier on when you go into details you have access to the book itself when you click on the book there's the read and listen option we know for some of our readers that reading some texts can be a little more challenging than others so we always have the read to option and that students can access without a login or password and so I may actually have to take off my headphones just a sec he likes his customers today there is a sale on berries and so for each one of these stories you're able to access those books as well as an activity that will accompany each one of these stories that you can access on here again same rules apply if the student is needs the instructions to be read out to them they have the Play feature and then they can play some of the activities there's always a note to teachers and to parents to help support that at this time the other piece that I want to show you is the related resources and we talked about getting access to the line masters both in PDF and in Word that would all be modifiable so if I go down to the berry card game I can look at the word document open it up and I have the cards here ready to either extend or make available for some of my parents and students that are working at home and then of course as you work in the classroom and then we have some related lessons so where you might go from here accompanying all of these is going to be a learning connexion video and this video will give you a short snapshot of how ideas develop for addition and subtraction as they leave the books and the cards together so give you just a quick listen for that how many muffins do you see did you count add or multiply in this video we'll explore the learning pathway for the big idea quantities and numbers can be added and subtracted to determine how many or how much outlined in Pearson's learning progression several mythology resources such as this grade two little book supports students in developing understanding and fluency position and subtraction two important concepts in this big idea our developing conceptual meaning of addition and subtraction in fluency and computation students begin by modeling add to and take from situations all right so you've got a sense of what that might sound like so for every one of our little books you're gonna have access to those learning connection videos and so I'm just gonna go back home to take a closer look at one of our activity cards so those are our little books and of course you can always search just by little books you can go by any grade and limit it to little books so for those K teachers in here you're able to access those K books in one place and you're able to see quickly what those books might be all about now I'll go into the activity card and here you're going to see it's structured very similarly at the very beginning you'll see what the lesson is all about what the math focus is going to be and what content knowledge they might need before entering into this lesson as well as the learning progression that's being highlighted where they're coming from and where they're going to in the details you'll see access to all of the PDF and Word documents that you can download so if I wanted that play money I could click on the PDF and I have all the money with the bills as well accessible that I can download and then maybe attach to either classroom or a place that you're communicating with parents all of the instructions will be here as well as some questions you might ask when you're in the classroom with your students you've got access to the teacher cards and the assessment all printable from here as well as the activity cards now know that if they're purchased in print they're laminated and double-sided but they're printable from mythology CA as well the other piece here is the learning highlight video so it's going to give you some suggestions of what to do in a quick one-minute video and these are accompanying all of our activities in grade 1 and in grade 2 quick sense of what that's all about what item can purchase with $20 no matter what I choose I will have less money left and savings so if I want to spend the least amount possible I will choose the book how can I pay for the book I can pay with a $5 bill and I will get two dollars and change or pay with a $10 bill and get $7 and changed or I could pay with a loonie and a tuning and get no change how can I find how much money I have lost in savings I can count what's left I can count back from 20 19 18 17 I can subtract 20 minus 3 is 17 to consolidate have students create their own items to sell at the toy store and label each item with the price less than $20 which two items could students fine with their savings all right so to accompany each one of the lessons you can actually upload your entire class you can name them whatever you like to ensure privacy of students these are all made-up names but as you observe some of these behaviors and strategies that students are just playing you can highlight them drag and drop them into each one of the boxes oh sorry let me minimize my screen there you can drag and drop them into the box or you can highlight them and click and add them into the box as you see them displaying each one of those behaviors there's immediate next steps in there for you to help you move those students along we also have many lessons available both as interventions printable as well as extensions for those students that are ready to move on to something more challenging and we also have the possible misconceptions that kids may encounter as they work with this activity particularly here in the next steps at home this might be something that you can accompany with either line masters or the store or the image and you can print that out there as well we've got word wall words and of course some related lessons that will help support some of that thinking as you go on to the next topic so that's the teaching component so far we've looked at how to search how to teach how to assess professional learning that sits in the drawer and now planning so most of you are probably well underway and know exactly where you want to go next but for those of you that are looking for a place to start you can go into the plans we also have long-range planners that are already pre-built or you can build your own I'm going to use the one sample long-range planner and we have different options as we know that different people work through different ideas in different ways and I am just gonna call this Miranda's plan 2020 save it and as soon as I adopt this plan I can actually change Brown on the sequence I might want to do 2d shapes right up front and then work on repeating patterns and that will just move if my computer wasn't delayed it would move so now we have two DS right up at the top you can make notes as you go along and change the titles if you'd like and we can go into operational fluency for March and see some suggestions of things that you might do with your grade one's different ways to think about problems both with part part holes and the doubles of number lines different ways to address some of those ideas so that's in there with plans all these plans are shareable and you can export them to a doc you can share them with other people that have mythology dossier accounts the last piece is the analytics I will go to in depth here today but know that it gathers all the analytics for both your class and for individual students here it works on a red light green light system where you see at a quick glance what your class is doing really well on what you need to spend a little bit more time on and what needs some more attention you'll notice that this reflects the back of the card that you've seen earlier and this blue is highlighting or indicating where the majority of your students are sitting as for the student view you can see a particular student narrow down exactly what they're working on perhaps with a curriculum view and you can see that I've done eight assessments under quantity and relationships and those that is how he's doing and as for patterns and relationships then you can see at a quick glance how he's doing with that and it will help for conversations either with parents or with other people at the school all of these you can export and for your very ease so that was a very quick walk through of Mythology Sienna of course we are having upcoming webinars if you want a more in-depth look at how to navigate this platform just a recap of what's available in grade one we have English and French both with 101 activities that are available as well as 34k and grade 1 mythology little books regardless of what grade you sign up for you will have access to all the different grades so if you sign up and register as a grade 1 teacher you will have access to all the K books as well as all the grade 2 books and same goes for the activities all of it is built on the learning progression and all of them come with professional learning videos grade 3 is coming in the fall as well it was great to French grade 2 French is coming in the fall as well any questions about mythology CA I'll pause for a quick moment and if you have any questions that we can answer right now feel free to place it in the chat and we will answer them as best we can so it's a lot of information when it comes to thinking about both you know using it has content knowledge through the idea of subtraction and then finding out all the pieces in the platform but if you have any particular questions now that we can address we'd be glad to do so all right feel free to put them in as you go if you think of something and Kim can help you answer it as we go so just a quick recap we have 72 different mythology little books ranging from K to 3 both in English and in French we have activity kits both grade 1 and grade 2 available in print both in English and in French as well as grade 3 coming in the fall in mythology CA currently we have that you have access to the K books grade 1 books grade 2 books you have access to grade 1 activities and grade 2 activities and grade three is coming in the fall and you might be familiar with some of our professional learning resources we talked about the learning progression today and that's what most of this is built upon some of that research grade three in the fall we did classroom testing in order to determine what exactly our grade three materials would look like and they have been really field tested to encourage that student gauge mint to really work on the addressing the diversity of understanding that you have within your classrooms to really remove those time constraints we really wanted to support with planning making sure that it was all aligned to Canadian curriculum and developing lessons that were developmentally appropriate for those students it addresses all curriculum expectations across Canada as it was built here in Canada and tested in Canadian classrooms all to encourage a growth mindset in mathematics the grade 3 components will include mythology little books which come with teacher guides as well that you can access in CA you also have the math mats those different laminated boards that students can use to show their thinking and feel free of any mistakes that they might be making as they as they show their thinking and then also an activity kit that will include double-sided laminate cards to work on differentiation for some of our students know that all of this is available for a one-year subscription for a hundred and forty dollars per teacher or a five-year subscription for six sixty five and like I mentioned before you'll have access to combined grades when you register and for now I'm going to show you how to register right now for some open access during this time where we're all trapped virtually again bundle pricing is available when you purchase pieces together so currently we have 90 day free access so that'll take you almost till the end of the year I'm pretty sure right to the end of the year for grade 1 and grade 2 mythology CA grade one in French grade one and two in English K of course can access that as well and grade threes coming in the fall you can access all of this at pearson mythology CA the same place that you registered for your free webinar and if you want more details about mythology and you want a little bit more in depth I know I went very quickly and you want more information you can register for a free webinar there we also have correlations we've logged everything like we mentioned to the curriculum so all of the curriculum expectations all the specifics are going to be in there you've got access to all the line masters and some sample plans and even some tutorial videos that you can access here at Mythology about CA the other piece that's available right now for parents at home are going to be the little books and so we're releasing two little books every week and I'll show you what that looks like so I could get to it so if you go to Pearson Canada dot see a back slash at home you have access to mythology little books in both English and in French with read aloud and activities for k23 parents that's is really a parent component although you're welcome to access it and then pass it on to some of the parents that you're connecting with this place also has the access to the 90 day for you for grade 1 & 2 teachers so when I go in here to the K to 3 we have English and French texts available and we've released two books every week you'll see that math focus is just above the title and then a letter that you might send home and connect with parents so it'll give them some suggestions of how to use the book with some possible line masters that accompany it so that's all available and accessible right now at Pearson sorry at Pearson Canada dot see a at home so Kim's going to just post the survey question into chat pod or maybe Patti can do that for me yeah I can put that in in just a minute so you perfect so I'm gonna keep going we really value your feedback we're always doing these webinars we've got another one next week we've got another one tomorrow night for mythology CA and of course your feedback helps us make it better for you and for others so if you're looking for more information about purchasing please take a snapshot of this of all your contact names and you can reach out to them if you have any further questions but we really value that feedback and if you have a chance to do so we would love for you to put in some of your ideas in there of how we can support teachers especially at this time using either the virtual platform or connecting with parents through some of those little books so thank you so much for joining me tonight I hope you had a chance to think about different problem types that you might present to your students as well as some models that you might use when you're with them and even when you're apart and if you have any suggestions again please let us know and thank you so much have a wonderful evening it would be great if you could just spend two minutes to put your ideas in the chat pod because depending on how things go we may be offering more webinars like this and we can offer them according to what you need and so if you can put that in that would be really helpful for us and real helpful for your colleagues that might sign up for a further webinar so again thank you for spending some time with us for participating in giving your ideas to others and working for your students so thanks again and have a great evening
