so let's start by working on the chat feature do you see any opportunities for addition and subtraction take a look at this picture we have Dan and Center just take a quick second to test out the chat feature and let us know do you see any opportunities for addition and subtraction so we have some yeses and [Music] lots of yeses fantastic so when you were thinking about some of those opportunities did you think about the carpets wondering maybe how many are altogether or did you think about how many more little dogs there were then big dogs may be looked at sized to compare them or maybe you just weren't wondering how many dogs there are altogether thinking about the dogs on the left of Dan versus the right again or the small dogs and little dogs or the dog that has a ball and the dog doesn't so using images like this one that comes from one of our stories in kindergarten danced on mediator allows lots of opportunities for kids to really explore addition and subtraction within a context that helped to really get them and to solidify some of those ideas with addition and subtraction in lots of different opportunities and so today we're really gonna unpack this learning progression specifically with fluency and this learning progression is just a step-by-step look at the way our learners develop understanding about different math concepts over time and so this learning progression is kind of our foundation for mythology was developed in Canada at the University of Alberta by dr. Lynn mcgarvey and it's been organized according to strand and then subdivided into big ideas threads and then indicators and so this is just a little sneak peek of what one of them looks like in this case today we're gonna be really exploring this big idea of quantities and numbers that can be added and subtracted to determine how many and how much and so the conceptual threads these banners across the top the navy blue banners are really about unpacking first this idea of understanding a conceptual meaning of addition and subtraction and then developing fluency and so today we're really gonna unpack this idea of fluency and how it develops from K 2 grade 3 so over time where do we start thinking about fluency in the earlier grades and then how does it progress over time into grade three so I'll give you another chance to take a look at this particular image it comes from a warm cozy nest it's one of our kindergarten stories do you see an addition situation and if you do what is that addition situation so again I'm going to ask you to type quickly into the chat do you see one and if you do see one what is it so what is that number problem or what is that number story and if you could just type that chat in so we have a response from Anna saying three birds in the nest plus one more yep three plus one three plus one equals four you lots of different ways of noting it three plus one how many toys are there altogether Oh fantastic so you might have thought of it as an expression you might have thought of it as an equation you might have thought of it as not even addition but rather one more so when we think about this initial idea of developing understanding and working with fluency we begin with the five the idea of five and the five frame tool is a really great way to help support some of our earliest learners this idea that there were three birds and I've used colored counters but of course you could use a variety of materials at home to indicate the three initial birds that you've seen and then one more joining that little purple bird and flying in so here we see that three plus one would make four and so when students begin to develop this initial piece of fluency they work fluently within five so they really work on developing an understanding in a sense of five one more one less all within that framework of five and so there are lots of line masters and opportunities to really get kids to explore this idea and they're available in Mythology CA and I will do a walk through today but thinking about different ways to differentiate the learn the learning so for some students that might be using the nest recording sheet and using concrete materials on those little nests maybe it's beans or maybe it's popcorn or maybe it's little toys that they have at home or in your classroom and for some students they might be ready to move to a new new miracle representation and so you see the line masters in the center where those numerals are there and you might even create this idea of a number one more than three one less than three and all with a line master to record some of those ideas you've got that five frame recording sheet where students can think about one more one less and work really fluently within that number five so let's take another look add in another image from dance doggy daycare this time I'm going to ask you to think of possible equations of addition and subtraction to ten using the image that you see right here and entering it into the chat box so what addition and subtraction equations do you see you so Anna says five and two Kathryn says how many more to make 10 mm if all the chairs were full five plus two minus one Susan says that interesting with three numerals and minus 10 minus 7 although the chairs how many yes the full chairs okay kind of operating sorry go ahead good it's kind of like the story how many more dogs would you need to fit the ten chairs yeah excellent so this these images provide opportunities for kids to really think about ten and it's no coincidence that it reflects a ten frame as students start to develop this sense of understanding of ten they think about addition and subtraction together and opportunities to develop ten or compose and decompose ten so I was thinking very similarly five and two as seven or ten subtract seven would be three or maybe you subtracted the two sides separately and you took the whole ten subtracted the two closest to you and then the five further away and you're left with three empty chairs or maybe somebody mentioned counting up to find out how many more you might need to fill up the table altogether so as students transition through some of these ideas they really work on fluently adding and subtracting with quantities to ten so we move from five really fluently and then to ten so being able to solidify some of that understanding for ten of course there are more line masters and then this time I'll give you a chance to identify how you might differentiate for some of the students in your class so these again are all available online and you'd have access to some of these to be able to support your students so take a second to think about how you might differentiate for your students what could you do with some of these line masters and of course they're numbered in the top that you can reference them as you make a note so again I think at the beginning I think you identified yourself as grade four I'm wrong let me know it is suggesting to use this with grade 4 students as an algebra question Oh awesome great thinking so even though the book has identified as a kindergarten book you can see how it can be any grade for lots of different uses for sure and different numbers for different students to differentiate absolutely last week we had some people talking about this idea of merging literacy and numeracy so that story template in the center might be a way of thinking about it or even the inside-outside recording sheet if you drew some dogs inside and some dogs outside you begin to tell your own story and Susan likes the visual supports of the line master 4 so that's the far right oh the the line master 5 yes the 10 frame recording sheet absolutely right number 11 yes definitely there are some problem opportunities for some students that are ready to sort of stretch their thinking and think about one more and one less all right awesome so all of these line masters like we've talked about are available in French as well and so in mythology we have grade 1 available right now in great shoe coming in the fall and so these little books have all been adapted not translated and kn1 is available on Mythology CA and I will show you how to access some of those books in 2 & 3 in French as well so all of these come from our materials either they're little books and those are the ones we've explored so far and other times they are activities and so this one comes from a grade-two activity kit and we have it we're showing a teacher card here and I know all the pieces might not be super simple to see at the moment but just note some of the key pieces there are some instructional supports in a Center some ideas of what to look for probing questions along the bottom and some suggestions of materials that you may use and so today we're really going to think about how we might modify those as you use them to support learning outside the classroom so in this case this one's really all about this idea of compliments of 10 we know that students become much more fluent when they recognize compliments up to 10 and so in this activity a student would play in a pair and so perhaps if they're playing at home they might play against themselves they select a seed card and either they can print this out at home or they could draw their own versions of seed cards wouldn't be too complicated and actually it's a great reinforcement of being able to identify one seed one card the second card please seed the third card three seed it's a great way to just modify it without having to worry about printing a line master so first they select a card and they selected for that goes in one side of the garden and so their partner or even themselves would think about the complement that would make 10 and in this case 6 and they'd go on continuing to draw new cards and filling up the garden with all the complements or the pair's 2:10 so a new piece and a new layer on the development of fluency is this idea of being able to recall those compliments so knowing them almost automatically understanding that when I think of for its complement is always 6 and that really helps develop more fluency ends are working to 10 and so from there we begin to develop even further skills and they start to explore doubles a little more in depth and so they use doubles and they use near doubles to really help they use doubles to help support that learning of near doubles and so here we have a concentration game and again these are available in line master but of course they could be developed on little pieces of paper independently by students or my parents to help support a game like this so how it works is you would take the cards flip them over and then flip over a sum and a expression and see if they match so 5 plus 6 and 16 do not match they do not have the same sum so you'd flip them back over but eventually they'll find some pairs and so in this case how does this double help with this double so if you knew that 6 plus 6 was 12 what will 7 plus 6 be so really helping students think about using facts that they know to support facts that they might not know so here it's extending that known sum into other unknown sums and so here we have doubles supporting near doubles all right so as we continue and students further develop their skills here we have a grade-2 activity where they're really working up to 20 and so now fluency and strategy are working hand in hand so the way this game works is you would flip a card and player a would place their counter in a place that makes sense for them in this case they've placed it here and they would take turns going back and forth player B would try to place their counter play or a would then think about being really strategic knowing that they want four in a line player B will of course try to block them while working on fluency at the same time strategy is a big component of this but of course speed is not really taken into account as you work on things like this and then you've got clear a and then of course player B and so there are addition cards as well as subtraction cards so what strategies might you use and if you're playing a game like this and so I want us to take it just a minute to quickly reflect I'm not going to get you to write in the chat but think about how this might be reused in a scenario at home as students work to develop that idea of fluency to 20 we've got differentiation all of these cards are available a majority of them I should say our available double-sided so in this case you see four and a line on one side that need perhaps some accommodations on the back there are three and aligned accommodations and of course combined grade extensions for those students that may need that little bit extra or for those classes that are working in a combined grade setting and they could build some of these cards themselves the last piece as we continue to push forward past 20 is the idea of multi digit fluency so using the estimation really help support the reasonableness of solutions and as we move up to bigger numbers this emphasis of reasonableness becomes a big component of fluency so what would your estimate be I'll give you a second to put some estimates into the chat so we have some estimates of 80 75 90 sort of be interesting to start thinking about different ways that you thought about getting to that number fantastic so did you think about what I was thinking and I rounded up for both numbers and I used 50 plus 40 and then what strategy might you use did you think about or do you have some students that might be thinking about counting on using a number line and so here we have they may start with 48 and do a big jump of 30 and then two more and then five more or maybe they represent it numerically where they group 48 and 30 and then add on to the nearest whole and then five more or maybe you've thought about decomposing into place value and so you've got 40 and 30 and then eight and seven you add your tens and add your ones and the numbers are a lot easier to manage more fluently in your head or maybe you balanced some of those values and you took two from 37 and gave them to 48 to create new totals of 50 and 35 which are a lot more easy to work with in your head or maybe you thought of an algorithm that might help support that addition and so as students move further along that continuum or that progression they develop really efficient strategies and know that some of those strategies might work better depending on which card you pull and so here you see question cards and those numbers are going to evoke different strategies that will of course become more efficient or less efficient depending on the numbers and of course not just the mental strategy but of course the algorithm as well when they work with multi digit numbers and at the same time this idea of estimation really supporting the idea of reasonableness and so this comes from one of our grade two activities and all of these are available in mythology dossier and so we're gonna do a quick walkthrough but I do want to fly over some of these pieces that help develop the idea of fluency from K up to Grade three and so we haven't really explored this idea of compliments but of course that becomes really helpful when students are thinking about sums to 100 as well and so how do we get access to some of these mythology has a site for parents and students so if you want to get students exploring some of these stories the k23 stories are available at Pearson Canada at dot see a back slash at home and so each week two new little books are added per grade and we have a read option and listen option the activities can be there are corresponding activities that can be tried online as well as a letter that works at home to support the connection between school and home and so there's a parent letter in there always to help support and so here you'll see when you enter the website there's the English version of all the stories as well as the French version of all the stories available and so currently I believe as of today there are eight stories up with two more coming each week and so to get parents and students to access these stories this is the site that I would direct them to where as teachers are able to use the mythology a web site and so this platform really brings together all those stories and all those activities in one place and we'll do a quick flyover of some of these features the ability to search to plan to teach to assess and track and some professional learning opportunities are available in da ta and I'm going to go in right now and show you how to access some of these activities so use signing here and once you're all signed in you are going to see a home page that looks just like this so I'm going to use I'm going to talk about the search features first and so I'm really gonna pay close attention to the three different ways that we're able to search the first way that you can search is either using a title that you know or a concept that you want to work on so for example I might put in AD and just see what comes up the piece that will be really helpful to you is this idea of the great sort of streamlining the opportunities that you see right now I see 69 results but I want to narrow it down so I'm gonna put in that I want a grade 1 book and I also want a story and so it'll narrow down all the opportunities for the stories that I can see right here I can also narrow down by activity and then I'll see nine different grade one results for add activities and you can see at a quick glance you have a variety of different opportunities to work on adding I'm going to use the back button to bring me back to the home page so the first way is to search the second way is to use the curriculum and so if you click on the curriculum I'm in as an Ontario teacher you can see in the top right corner that I'm an Ontario teacher and so I'm gonna maybe use grade one again just as an example these expectations are for Ontario but of course they would be modified depending on what province you're in and so I'm going to use the arrow on the right-hand side to drop down the specific expectations that I might be looking for and so the magnifying glass allows me to select particular expectations and see what's available in grade one so I'm going to click the magnifying glass and I see that there are ten opportunities for students to solve a variety of problems involving addition and subtraction so that's one other way to do search I'm gonna use the back button again to bring back and I'm back at the home I can also search by the learning progression the piece that we were around packing today so I'm going to go in and take a look at Dan's doggie daycare I remember the title but you might not remember the title you may go in in a different way to search but once I've gone in the stories are available in the platform just the same as the little activities and so on the About tab you're gonna see really quickly some key features that you might find helpful curriculum as well as the learning progression but the details piece is going to allow me to access the little book and that's just for my own use as a teacher to take a quick look if this is a story that I might want to direct my students to on the at home site so if I click on the story I can take a look at the story read and listen and of course decide if this is the right book for my class so I can take a quick peek and of course this reading to function will exist for on a student side as well the other piece is the related resource as we mentioned all the line masters are available here here you have access to the PDF and word versions with that we've already taken a quick look at the making ten problems for example here's the PDF I can click on it and I can download and then use that to support my students of course from here alright so another way to go back is by using the arrow but also using the home button so here I'm going to use the home button and I'm also going to go and do a search for multi-digit so let's take a look for those teachers that work with older students here here's a grade two activity and I imagine that it can easily be extended to our grade threes that are working on some of that thinking I'm gonna click on multi-digit fluency and again the same features are here about I'm gonna go into the details you can see that for the activities the line masters are available right at the top in PDF and Word again if you need to modify for some of the students in your class the instructions of course for you so that you can quickly take a read and think about how you might modify it to work at home so you can write some notes to your students and then some images of what the completed activity might look like like just for your own reference and so some of the things that you might be thinking about as you assign pieces like this are some of the learning videos so we've got learning highlight videos they are one-minute videos that are really there to support you with thinking about a variety of different strategies some support for consolidation and some ideas for materials that you may use so I'm going to give you a little look at that um they're both one minute let's explore how we might use mental math strategies to estimate sums and differences and to solve number sentences with greater numbers the students see how the known doubles 210 can be extended to greater numbers for example knowing that double 3 is 6 helps us know that double 30 is 60 some students may have mastered the make 10 strategy with numbers 210 I have difficulty extending his strategy to numbers that are greater than 10 for example 19 plus 23 could be solved mentally by taking one away from the 23 and giving it to 19 to make 20 then adding 20 to 22 to get 42 encouraged students to use their estimates to help them see whether their answers are reasonable for example since nineteen is close to 20 and 23 is also close to 20 our estimate is 20 plus 20 or 40 the answer 42 is reasonable because 42 is very close to 40 for those students who require additional support on decomposing time refer to the intervention activity 13 [Music] okay so that's our learning highlight video and those exist on the right hand side for all of our lessons for all of our activities I should say as well as learning connexion videos and that really helps unpack the bit the big idea a little bit further a little bit more in depth and it will select key activities and little books and talk about how they might work together so you always have that option on the right hand side assessment is here although I'm not going to go too much into it today feel free to take a look at it on your own but of course you can upload your own students and drag and drop them in when you see specific behaviors or strategies that they're displaying another key piece is the mini lessons for many of your students that differentiation piece is going to be key so the opportunity to provide mini lessons that are for your students that are working at grade level as well as some intervention opportunities both with a mini lesson and practice or an extension opportunity for those students that are ready to continue the thinking in a little greater depth we also have possible misconceptions and again next steps in class and in particular at home at a time like this so it's going to give you some suggestions or tips of things that you might provide to parents to be able to support at home this idea as well here you've got word wall and then of course the additional lessons either on grade or an intervention to help better support your students this intervention was specifically mentioned in the video so you've got access to those at the bottom as well so we've talked about the ability to search if I go back home I have the option to search if I click on any activity you always see the professional learning opportunities on the side the little videos that you've got there you always have the option to dive a little deeper in the About tab the details will give you the lessons themselves you've got assessment and of course some follow-up related activities the last piece that I want to quickly show you is the plan so the opportunity to take some plans that have already been created for you and adapt them as your own so in the plan tab there are some pre created activities and mine's just loading might be a little tired so as we're going into the plan here we are you're gonna scroll down closer to the bottom to take a look at some of the sample plans and so you'll see here a section called sample plans and you're able to take some of those plans we've got full long-range plans but we also have some really shorter versions for grade 1 and grade 2 I'm going to click on this particular one for purposeful practice and you've got this opportunity to really highlight some of the number or patterning in algebra opportunities that you might go as a great place to start so this idea of skip counting or maybe you want to dive a little deeper into fluency you've got a series of books all tagged here as a book or as an activity that you can use to further develop the understanding of particular concepts for your students if you decide that this is the plan for you you can adapt it by using it as your sample plan click the use sample plan to name it whatever you'd like Brandes then save it and then you'll be able to adapt it as you need so you might completely delete a section because you may have already completed that or you may move some sections around by either dragging it and moving it into a new position or using the arrows so my computer is a little tired today it's taking an extra second to catch up but the arrow allows you to move and change the order but as well the little hand pops up and you're able to drag and shift the order as well same thing over here in the center you can change the order of the specific lessons themselves maybe you want to work on counting on and counting back before you go into bigger numbers and so you can change the order yourself and I encourage you to explore this the best way is to go in and develop your own and play around with it and you've got some more features in there that you can check out at your own time so that's a quick overview of mythology and I'm gonna just jump back in to our platform and I believe Kim is going to do another Quick Poll just a really quick polling in terms of let me just pull up number two and let me continue so two questions just what features of mythology dot CA would you like to learn more about so you've had a really quick quick preview in other words kind of like what's gonna be most important to you and your go-to first and what types of things you're gonna be thinking about first and most important to you and if you could just click on one of those buttons that will really help us and then the second question is if there's further webinars what content area would you like to learn more about you you okay awesome we just wait another ten seconds or so to get everybody's vote sometimes it takes a while to think about what what is it that I need most when we have to prioritize those things that's helpful so we've had 11 of 16 voted so far just wait another 10 seconds or so if anybody else would like to cast their vote in that's perfect this is really helpful for us when we're further deciding what areas that we want to dive deeper into and what areas we can better support you with yeah so a lot of people are really searching for activities based on specific content and really planning that sequence of activities and moving into fluency and focusing a little bit more on subtraction a lot of people so thank you so much yeah that gives us great information so let's just do one final quick recap what's in mythology CA again mythology CA is a teacher platform in there you currently have in grade one English available as well as French you've got over a hundred activities you've got over 30 different stories and of course if your grade one you get access to those case stories as well if you're a Katie Chur I recommend you to sign up as grade 1 and then you'll have access to them okay and then the learning progression that everything of course is built on and then access to those professional learning videos in grade 2 currently English is available and French will be available in the fall and grade 3 is coming in the fall as well so the portfolio is here it is K to 8 and as we've mentioned that K to 3 is currently in development and available and we are working our way up the grades but of course you might be familiar with some of the pieces along the bottom whether it be the professional learning resources some of those titles that you might be familiar with or the learning progression like we unpacked today and then the materials at the top are available the stories are available in print and digital inside CA the activity kits are available in print and in digital in CA and there's that digital piece grade three is coming in August of 2020 we spent the fall the past fall classroom testing it across Canada to make sure that it really supports student engagement in math it addresses that diversity and math understanding that we have in classrooms and really different ways to better help support you with planning effectively and working on curriculum focused activities that are specific to Canadian curriculum in grade three so a little grade three mythology CA will be the center but of course all these materials can either be bought in combination or in isolation you have access to the little stories that are available in da ta you have engaging activity cards that are dry race that students can wipe on and wipe off and then of course another piece of the puzzle which is the math mats and these are really common tools that you might see and use with your grade threes and grade force that really encourage that growth points that the idea of being able to write on it and quickly wipe off if you change your mind so things like hundreds charts number lines 10 frames five frames will be available in some of these math mats and so of course the pricing for this a one-year subscription per teacher is a hundred and forty dollars and a five-year subscription is 665 and of course bundling prices are available when you purchase things together but like we've mentioned there is 90 day open access available right the same place that you signed up for the weaponers do you have access to the 90 days where you can register to try it out for those people that are not already registered and that's available at Pearson mythology CA and there so Miranda can you just click on that one more time because we did have a question where can the children access the books so if you click on and just show that webpage of the little books oh sorry okay so it's Pearson Canada dot T a back slash at home and so here you're gonna see teacher access and you're gonna go specifically to parent to access mouth all the G little books in English and in French are here and so you've got the English version and the French all available here go back to English and we're adding new books every week so you'll see the kindergarten the grade one the grade two and the grade three and that's where your students can access those stories we've got a few up and a quick recap of what the focus is and of course a parent letter that supports all of those pieces and every week two more come up absolutely thank you no problem don't know why it doesn't do that for me here we go on Pearson mythology CA you also have access to the line masters and the curriculum correlations and of course tutorial videos just in case you forget some of the things that we've talked about today and you've got access to that on the main web page as well just some guidelines for sharing that we just want to quickly recap or of course happy for you to use these materials online and you may download some of those line masters and upload onto platforms that you're currently using with your class but just some guidelines to help support you and protect our content creators and copyright so just some some rules of thumb of course download everything and put it on your hard drive take what you need and only when you need it and upload it up for your students it's to be shared only with your students in a way that they are able to log in and access it can't be posted on board web sites or shared publicly with other teachers and this access of course is available until the end of June so Miranda can you talk a little bit too about possible up copy upcoming curriculum oh yes of course so the benefit to mythology ta let me just go back to that the benefits of dot CA being available on a digital platform is that all of the expectations are actually tagged to each of the activities and so being able to retag them will be quite I won't say simple but but easier because everything is built on a learning progression so all of these are aligned to big ideas in mathematics and so it's just a matter of reet agging all the curriculum and that can be done quite quickly okay and so just a quick recap so students can access through the app home site or parents and then teachers can access through mythology ta platform and so of course we're always looking for feedback to make these webinars better we're bang on with quarter two so I want to let you go and let you enjoy your lovely evening it is snowing outside my window so hopefully it's not snowing where you are and you can get outside and enjoy but we really value your feedback so Kim is gonna put that into the chat right now and if you can take it just a moment to fill that out for us that would be amazing it actually takes one to two minutes to do that there's two or three simple questions that are in there and as you're filling that out Maranda rap up for us absolutely so if you're looking for more information please feel free to reach out to your contact all of the names are here you can take a quick photo or of course you're going to get the video after all of this probably tomorrow you should get a recording of this with any details of how to contact your rep so Kim and I'll be here for another 10 minutes or so if you have any other questions feel free to ask so and if not wonderfully
