Jen we're going to focus on kindergarten today just as you wait for the session to really begin if you can just pay attention to the few nuggets that are there introduce yourself in the chat let us know what province or school board you're from we may have people from across Canada today we know that most of you are in kindergarten but if you teach something else if you can pop that in there that would be great currently you're all in listen-only mode right now just for a better sound quality and we have a large group with us today but you're welcome to type your questions in the chat pod any time during the session they will be answered throughout and at times we may pop open and a little bit of question-and-answer time to just help move things along and any questions we don't get to one of our representatives will reach out to you as for email after the webinar and you will be receiving a recording of this webinar through a link in an email as soon as possible patty can talk about that at the end so hopefully you're introducing yourself in the chat and while you're doing that I will introduce myself and a few other people here that are from Pearson I'm Kim master Marty doe and I work as a planning and implementation manager for Pearson supporting math and religion and I've been here about a year and a half now that time just keeps creeping up my background I have been in education my whole life ever since I started kindergarten my last five years was with the ministry here in Ontario working across quite a few boards in southern Ontario working supporting math with superintendents principals and teacher teams and prior to that I come out of Durham Catholic and with me online we have Miranda coos she can introduce herself quick and then I'm gonna ask patty just introduce herself quick so let's start with Miranda perfect so my name is Miranda and I'm gonna be monitoring the chat today helping Kim in the background and so I am a teacher from Toronto Catholic and I'm seconded with Pearson and I'll be helping you guys answer some question oh I think she just faded out a bit your video off as well Miranda you just fade it off in the last sentence oh all right I'm not sure what my last sentence was but I'm here to help you out in the chat and I'll be helping him in the background and I have my video off I'm gonna remind him to turn her video off as well and we'll go to potty oh good afternoon everyone it's Patty Henderson I'm the mass marketing manager here and I'm so glad to see so many people with us today so welcome so there we go I think you can see everything now and we really want today to be a joint Agenda conversation between the people that are on the line and us we've got the power of many educators here so some of the ideas you're going to get from the resources but I'm sure some of the ideas you're going to get from each other in the chat so we really want to hear from you and we will have opportunities for you to actually enter your thoughts as we go through some of these resources it will be somewhat interactive and just a reminder to make sure that your blue button says all panelists and attendees that way everybody gets to see what you're saying so today we're going to be talking about math learning at home in school through the mythology resources that are directly oriented towards kindergarten and we're going to focus on planning and differentiation through looking at the learning progression through looking at the math little books and really focusing on that flexibility and engagement using the resources of mythology dossier in the e-text platform of which the kindergarten resources are accessed through and so online today we're going to have people that are using different resources so I'm going to ask patty if she can put up the first poll or do I actually have to put it up either your Miranda will have to okay so let's just see if I can look I'll just launched I can do it my own problem okay I got the first one lon so basically who's online you know are you new to mythology have you been using them a little bit have you been using them a lot and that will help us orient our conversation a little bit more targeted to who's e'er we have about half the people voted in you and we'll just wait a couple more seconds for the last few to do their little clicks great I think we've got most people clicked in so if I share my results we have about half of you that are brand-new to mythology and about the other half that have used mythology or mythology on Francaise or little books and there is a small amount of you that have actually been using it more than three months and so when we try to talk about who gots what who get who has what we'll try not to get confused but we'll keep this in mind that we do have about half of you that are brand new to mythology so the people that have been using it in the last little while might be able to offer some tips and things as we go through so let me just stop Launch Poll sharing this and I'm just going to go back one because the other thing we would like to do is just quickly launch poll number two you so startup let's get lunch too so basically now that we know you're either new or those people that have used it or are using it even in a short time are you using the open access little book so that's the free site or are you using the open access mythology CA or mythology CA that's with the activity cards and all the other resources that are in there or you know are you using your purchased print little books and teachers guides and if you are using the purchased ones do you use the teacher etext guides so you might be popping in more than one here you and then we'll just wait about ten more seconds for the rest of you to just pop your how you're using this stuff you and that helps us think place okay I think we've had most people vote usually it's like popcorn when it start slowing down we know that we can share it so we have people using a variety of things probably about half of you have used purchased to print little books and then some of you have used the teacher guide so we're gonna be talking about those as kind of a set and they open access as a set okay I think that we are ready to go thank you everyone for popping in there that really helps think about who the audience is because I can't see you and it helps me kind of think about who you are and what you need so Mythology mythology is a family of resources and we like to show this slide because the things that are in the bottom are the resources that really support what you actually see every day in the classroom so there is a math success for all that's easily Google Google Google a boat and you can find some of the research there's a learning progression we're going to talk a little bit more today there's professional learning resources that some of you might have seen like taking shape what to look for you might have used those as activities in your class and there's implementation support similar to what we're doing today or often boards work to a board would work together for an implementation plan so today we're going to be talking about the math little books that are available for kindergarten and on the right hand side how they're accessible through mythology dossier in the middle are the activity kits that go along with these resources for grade 1 2 and grade 3 is coming out in for the September so let's start with Ideas some of your ideas this is from one of the kindergarten little books by Nadine and Nadine is an author and she lives out in BC currently how might you describe one of these patterns and if you can take a quick look at one of these patterns and how would you describe it and just pop that in the chat pod you you you and then Miranda if there's some that are coming in maybe just kind of read out a couple of them absolutely so we see a repeating pattern a complex pattern and a a DB pattern we've got growing patterns an a a B pattern pattern where the color is changing so like white black white black white black yep we see a pattern a B patterns that's great it's great there's so many different ways we can talk about these you know so even the one that said about colors you know it can be white black white black or I'm looking at the one with the white strings and the white and black strings how do we account for the blue and red you know how might we talk about that it might be white black white black white black circle and talking about patterns in various different ways and so these are just really engaging for young children and we're going to talk about some of how these things came about and Learning Progression why they are the math that they are so all the maths little books are based on the Pearson learning progression and this is a step by step look at the stages of knowledge and skill that a learner goes through now because it's on paper and it's two-dimensional it's written as a linear type of thing but we know children don't all progress in the same way and so when we look at one of the pages of the big ideas this is a geometry one and it talks about 2d and 3d shapes as a big idea can be analyzed and classified in different ways by their attributes when we look at the left hand side we're starting with where a lot of our kindergarten educators are when they come in and come into school all the way to the right hand side where we hope children will be around grade three and so we can see that the big ideas are oriented we have 13 big ideas and then they're oriented or subdivided by conceptual threads and we can see how moving from left to right it moves them from some concepts into more complex concepts and it doesn't mean a student will go lockstep along these way sometimes when they're getting into a more complex concept they move back a bit and move forward and different children will move at different rates but all the resources are built on this math and so here in Ontario we may be getting a new curriculum that it doesn't really matter because the math is the math the books will just be correlated to the new curriculum because you can see here that the math underlies everything the other way we think about the learning progression is the little books actually are oriented according to those big ideas so in the top left we have another kindergarten book that talked about this learning pathway about shapes and solids can be explored and compared based on attributes moving into another kindergarten book called the castle wall and what was here I believe is a grade one right Miranda yep it's Griffin and so this is the pathway again from k2 three that we can see a little bit more where do the resources fit within this learning pathway so basically the the descriptors here can orient us to the learning of a Russian or it can orient us to the curriculum and so math ology little books really support and they're just so great for differentiation for flexibility for engagement so within kindergarten there are 16 titles about half of them are number and they include indigenous connections written by Canadian indigenous authors and they're all adopted for French so some of the names and some of the books in English are different than the names they are in fringe and a variety of other ways that they're adapted so let's take a look at this one this is from the Student Thinking castle wall and it is from that one big idea but you know I'm curious to know what you think how it might actually inspire student thinking so if you take a minute and scan over the page what might an illustration like this inspire and student thinking so if you think about a math conversation with a small group of your kindergarten students what might they say about it what might they want to talk about and if you can pop that into the chat pod what might they notice lightly sir II some of the little people working together they're using shapes simple machines oh my gosh so many coming in shapes colors ramps stacking rolling problem solving 3d shapes counting wow these differences building we got lots in there Wow so you can see how like even though this is situated in the geometry strand it can talk about well-being people working together it can talk about problem solving it can talk about all different math and literacy aspects so when we think about the kindergarten curriculum in general across Canada it really is about that integration of skills and knowledge and here in Ontario it is especially about the integration of those four four areas that that we really focus on and look at how can we move learning ahead as its work together and so we have some nice little pictures of teachers you can just Teachers follow hashtag mythology or Patti can talk at the end about another Twitter handle that teachers are just putting out ideas about when they use these books and how they're putting out materials intentionally to support not only the idea of oh here's a castle wall they're putting out materials to intentionally support the math concepts that are actually in that book so here's a another picture of a few different classrooms and setups of different types of material that really help children start thinking about 3d shapes and how they work together and another one intentionally again putting different types of materials together to think about how they work together and whether it's the bottom one is a BC curriculum and big ideas or whether in Ontario we talk about our conceptual understandings and overall expectations they really are the big ideas in math and they can be brought about by these ideas that are brought about in literacy from the math little books so some of Open Access you have open access and that is available through her through the Pearson open access page and that is available till the end of June at the end of June then this is no longer available and but it's always available through purchase and what we're going to do is show you what's what's available and how you can access these great ideas and really think about engagement flexibility differentiation both at home and at school so here is the what the page looks like it's just piercing canada dot CA at home and you have access to the little ebooks for free until the end of June and what you'll find there is the actual little book that kids can click on or parents can click on and a parent info letter that suggests different activities that they can do at home and then there's also the open access to Mythology dossier and Mythology Dosage that's open again just till the end of June but if you haven't seen it it might be a good idea just go in and get your free access in the next couple of weeks so you can take a look around and see what's there and then the last thing that is it's always open is the Kindergarten Correlation kindergarten correlation so when we're thinking about planning this is one way to think about planning the curriculum correlations to the little books and when we get and if we get the new curriculum it will be correlated to that and as you see there's all the other province there that are correlated and I'll show you in mythology CA and in the e-text how we can take another look at planning also so what I'm going to show Mythology CA you now is mythology dot CA and how I'm accessing the little books through mythology CA is kind of like a one-stop shop when we think about supporting our students and you know we think about supporting our students today in that it's it's it's an odd situation we find ourselves in in June normally teaching is very cyclical we know what to expect to come September in this September we really don't know what to expect but in reality there's three scenarios either everybody's at school everybody's at home or there's some combination of the two that's kind of what I kind of think of the scenarios so as we go through this information think about those scenarios and how this resource it doesn't matter where you are teaching from or where the students are learning from you can use it and they can access all this information to continue their learning so what I'm going to do is just take that off and Math All pull up I'm just going to pull up my other part and I am going to go into math all the TTA there we go so I think we've got a little bit of a home page if I can get rid of this top part but I'm not quite sure I can there we go we'll do it that way so when you register you click go in and you Home Page will come to a home page and the home page always looks like this my home page looks like this with dif five different pins you might choose to pin different books up there that's up to you we'll talk about it later but really when we think about mythology CA it's it's a it's a way to search it's a way to teach it's a way to plan it's a way to assess and it's a way for us as educators to learn more about the math with the resources that are here so those are the kind of functions I will quickly talk about and when we think about searching let's say I just want to search for an activity or something so I might oops well maybe my time dough bumped me out here let's go in let's say I was doing patterning so I can just search by keyword I'll go in when I'm looking at patterning I'm kindergarten helps if I spell it right let's just redo that I'm just going to take a look at kindergarten and all my little books that have to do with patterning once I do search by strand there I have two books for patterning I can quickly go into we can be and all my information is there so that's one way to search another way I'm going to go back to home always on the top here and I'm back to my search so I can search by learning progression so this is where I showed you the kind of the one sheet and that's the print that comes in the boxes but we have the learning progression that's here also and so if I want to think about let's say number I can take a look at this big idea numbers tell how much and how many and think about applying the principles of counting and here I've got a few things about the principle of counting but maybe they are simply starting somewhere or here where they're thinking about using the numbers forwards and backwards or they might still be just kind of thinking about counting forward I can press that green button and up will come my little books for kindergarten that are available again I'm always just kind of going back here making sure I've got my grade because I'm looking at number maybe I still wanted to stay in the number strand and so my little books that deal with counting and number come up here so we can search by keyword we can search by learning progression we can search by Search by Curriculum curriculum so currently we're getting the kindergarten curriculum into dot CA so right now I have it in my demo and very soon it will be available through everybody else but again I can go into my K curriculum think about my math this is the Ontario one so demonstrating math and literacy behaviors I'm going to go down to one of my math overalls so again maybe I'm looking at patterning and here's some of my specific expectations I just click on the green button and up comes the actual book that deals see how now we only have the one book because the other book didn't deal with this specific expectation so it really narrows down what you really want to teach and then the last thing I'm going to say is we can just if you know the name of the book so those people that have the print Search by Book books you may be looking for warm cozy nest because you know that that's the book that you're looking for and you can just search for that one book so there's when we're thinking about planning there's so many ways to find the actual book that you need for planning okay so once you have the book let's see what what what is available in the book so in mythology CA we have a little bit of information about the book and when we're thinking about again planning it tells us what the math because focus is it gives us the curriculum expectations here I'm showing you Ontario but if you are in Alberta the Alberta curriculum pops up it's really nice in Ontario how you do have math but then also there's some other areas that are focused on in here it's problem-solving and innovating and then again the learning progression is here highlighted in blue of what part of the learning progression this resource actually focuses on so as I just scroll back up again that gave me everything about so when I'm thinking about planning this is the place to go so now what do my kids get how do I get stuff to my kids we have the little book Accessing the Little Book so all you have to do is click here there's a little link on the bottom and it will bring you to the exact same place as the open source is it's the exact same one this is the same place as if you have your print books and on the back of the print book there is a URL or [Music] code there too that you can QR code that you can just use your phone or iPad it brings you to the exact same place and so children and parents can have access to this at home right now through the free access they can have this and then through the purchased access they have this through the URL and through the cue of our code on the back of the book and these books are great it because one I love the illustrations but two if a student is reading it at home by themselves have the auditory she looks down and sees a nest there's a good place to have a rest one yellow bird at rest in a warm cozy nest so these are accessible for parents at home so I'm just going to go back to hope I think I went too far there there we go we've got our warm coziness so they have access to the book underneath there's Guiding Questions some really nice guiding questions so again if you're at school these are great to have conversations with students if they're at home these are great to adapt for parents to have conversations with students in whatever medium you transfer information they're also great if you're actually meeting with small groups of students at school or synchronous to have some great math conversations and then as you're sharing the story or sharing with parents it gives us an idea of the type of math type of things that we're looking for in terms of supporting the students in using the math that's actually there so we've had the about we've had the details and now if we move over to the right we see related resources and so it gives us options of Line Masters some line masters and related lessons so if we take a look at the line masters the the connecting at home is again the same page as as what's on the free site here it's just accessible here and these are available for you to use with parents at home or put into newsletters if we're back into school the other option is it gives all the line masters that are here so we can use some of the line masters especially for differentiated support some students might really still need to do the modeling of the exact situation of using some if they're at home macaroni or something if they're at school there might be something else to model moving birds in and out and talking about those numbers and number sequences some students might be ready for they might be ready for let's say the is this one pie frame I think it's this one they might be ready for using other things to represent some of their thinking they might be ready to move into five frames and use counters or other types of things that they might have at home to represent and to talk about these stories so we can see that they are line masters and so you can project these in in whatever system you're using if it's learning at home parents can look at this and easily replicate it they don't actually have to print it and then if you're working at school there might be other ideas that you would use this or modify these because they're all in word and so you can modify them in any way that that you want and then there's always a literacy connection with any of these activities where they can make their own book now again this is a line master that they print and fold but students could easily make their own book about how many birds in the nest and making their pictures and making their very own stories so again when it comes to differentiation some students might only be working numbers 2 3 some to 5 some to 10 maybe even some more than that so they provide lots of opportunities for that differentiation and then the last thing on the bottom it shows other related lessons and other books that are available on grade and then it moves up to the above grade so you may even have some students that are ready for some different type of moving forward with their math and it'll give a related type of math book and activity for that so it really supports that differentiation for our students so Learningconnexion we've looked at the about gives us information curriculum and things like that we've looked at details that's where we find the little book and access to the little book and we found the related resources and then also on the right there our professional learning resource videos that support these ideas and again it goes back to the the learning progression it helps us as educators understand what comes before and what comes after in the math so that when we're watching our students play or supporting parents at home we can help them think about that math in a really engaging way so I'm going to a little bit of this learning connexion video for you [Music] what do you notice what do you wonder how many dogs do you see in this video we'll explore the learning pathway for the big idea numbers tell us how many and how much outlined in Pierson's learning progression several mythology resources such a kindergarten little book provide opportunities for students to count and subitize one important concept in this big idea is applying the principles of counting initially when students learn to count they touch or tag each item one at a time in this kindergarten little book students learn to count sets to 5 1 2 3 4 5 as students do this they demonstrate the counting principle of one-to-one correspondence when objects are not displayed in a straight line watch for students who count the same object more than once or forget to count one of the objects for those students providing the same number of counters as objects can help them keep track of what they've already counted by dragging over one counter as they count each object 1 2 3 4 5 when counting students learn that the last counting word they say tells how many objects are in the set not just move ahead to index you we've explored several indicators in this big idea and a few of the available resources in mythology these resources can be used to help students quantify collections of objects to inform instruction for your grade refer to your provincial curriculum so how might your students count the dogs [Music] you so I was able to show you a little bit about one of these and again they go from the learning from kindergarten to about grade three along one of the big ideas and it shows the different resources that are there so depending on where your students are at you can use different resources so in mythology CA when it's purchased as a license you get access to the kindergarten little books but you get access to everything that's in there so all the grade one all the grade to all the grade three activities and all the grade one two and three books and so buying one license gets you everything so in mythology I really like mythologyca it because it's a kind of a one-stop shop to orient myself to the resources especially for kindergarten and little books it gives me my learning progression ideas and so this is all available through the free access or if you purchase mythology CA it gets a little bit confusing but what we'll do now is I'm going to go into the e-text version of the teacher's guide so when we think about kindergarten little books in print it comes with five little books for each there'd be five warming cozy nest books there's a lap book meaning a big book that could come with it and also the online access to the e-text so when you purchase the kindergarten set like that then you get this other link so this link down here says access to teachers guide teachers guide so basically the teacher's guide is the mythology's answer or the mythology way of thinking about the same activity cards that are in grade one two three only it's in and it's in this link to the teacher's guide so if I click that if you purchased it you have a username and a password I think that this is it you have a user and a school username and a school password that gets you into this teacher's guide so in the purchase of the print the electronic is also included so currently this is not available for free access and just ignore me as I scroll down my my e-text is a big library you won't have all these things what will happen is when you open your library you will have the kindergarten little books that are here so what I like about it I can access my etext library right through mythology CA it's kind of like a 1:1 way and I get to go back and forth really easily without really thinking about it and so in in the library again you have the little books but you also have the teacher's guide and that's what gives you all the different activities so I'd like to take a minute and just bring you through some of those things and so I'm just going to go back to the warm cozy nest Kim I'm just gonna interrupt for what a minute just a heads up there you've got about six ish minutes to go okay we might take an extra five on there so we end at 10 - okay no problem just giving you a heads up yeah cuz we just want to do a quick run-through of what's in here so here is the teacher's guide and so if I just minimize that a little bit we'll see that it has opportunities again for that learning pathway and it gives opportunities in thinking about planning so it gives an idea of what the math focus is what some large group options might be what some small group options might be and what might be placed at what I call learning centers but in other words what are the materials I might set out to bring about some of this math thinking and it gives me the exact page to look for so we're going to just take a look at one of the learning center options and this is simply [Music] activity or a game I can put it up there and just take a quick look and think about hmm how might students actually use some of these materials you so it uses a line master number cards it uses some sort of counters or stuff and then it uses something for nests like cups or something and this is traditionally a matching game but we can imagine that if students have some sort of cups or containers some sort of stuff and then some sort of number cards the possibilities that these students will do in terms of mixing matching moving naming sorting it really brings about a lot of those early number concepts so this game could be set up like this or the materials could be set out for a way for the students to actually play with the materials in the assessment master we see that here we have again home connections that are available it's the same home connection letter that is available the mythology dossier goes to the same place there's also for every teacher's guide there's an assessment master again this comes in word so what it does it gives us the actual math that's available that can come about in these activities and how you organize your assessment is up to you just alter this in whatever word or whatever fashion you want but the benefit is it gives the specific math that can be brought about with this on the left hand side I can again find my line masters in Word or PDF the same as what's in mythology dossier just another way to access it I can find the student book again the wordless one can be accessed here also in addition that can access here there's the the book the same access the other access here is through a wordless book so this again is great for math conversations when we just want to have those great conversations with students for the math of where they're at they can be used for that and then the last thing here on the left hand side I'm going to show you is for planning so math ology Big Ideas again thinking about that learning progression and this is really about number so again this helps me understand which books are used when with which big ideas but it also can link directly to specific expectations so we can take a look at this and know which specific expectations I'm planning for and what book I'm going to use so that's all accessible in the e-text PowerPoint so I'm just going to go back to the PowerPoint so we've looked at mythology dossier and everything that's available there and then we've looked in addition when you have the print versions you also have the e-text so we can see how it's helpful at any of those three scenarios at school everybody's at school everybody's at home or there's some sort of combination between them it for kindergarten it really is a tool that puts literacy and math together that partners directly with families and parents as a real partner and provides just enjoyable math for them to work through and so maybe we Recap can just have a quick recap that I think in kindergarten there are three indigenous perspective books written by indigenous authors they're all adapted for French that there's projectable and word lists there's in the teacher's guide there's large groups small group and Center options there is all those Shared Reading activities in the teacher's guide as well as the shared reading which we didn't do today but in the teacher's guide are opportunities for shared reading as you read it there's guiding questions and responses for students to look at there's also opportunities as you see here connecting to geometry there's opportunities to really think about what am i watching for for the students and that's here in the teacher's guide activities or in the shared reading we've looked at the different line masters that are available for differentiation and we've seen all the things that are available for assessment throughout the teachers guides and throughout the little books and the line masters so as we close up you know this is a wonderful picture and just in your mind if you can think about hmm how might this image inspire my students thinking what might your in the wonder about this and actually if you can pop those in the chat pod that would be great it's the end of the year you know your students well what might they be wondering about this picture you you okay so we're seeing perspective addition/subtraction one more will the bird will the cat catch the birds because we see them climbing up the tree why are there different color birds well total again it it's really not just about the math is it like it's really about supporting the whole student supporting the whole kindergarten curriculum and yet we can do that through a math lens and so I'm Pricing going to invite Patti to come on and to talk a little bit about this thanks Kim it and gets patty the math marketing manager and if you could go back one slide oops that would be critic sorry yeah and I know that Miranda has kindly been answering a number of these questions in in chat alright I'll just quickly review kindergarten components and pricing and we really do have an option for every budget we have a lap book pack so that's one of every kindergarten title there's 16 total for $350 so those are the big books we have a classroom pack so that's the very similar to that but you have you have those teachers guides that can walk you through included they're really helpful lots of activities in there and so that lap book classroom pack is really really sells quite well we also have little books and so we have great packs for kindergarten each grade pack has the sixteen titles in there and they come in packs of four and so with a teacher's guide and the last piece Kim talked about mythology dossier we have a one-year license for 140 and we also have a five-year license for 665 and right now we have a buy now and save it to July 15th that we have discounts on print if you buy mythology CA and the last slide that we're going to spend some time on is if any of any of these items are of interest to you and your local sales representative can really help you sort through that the variety of options we have for purchase Local Sales Representatives and these are your local reps here so we're going to end in just a couple of minutes but if you have a question about what do you have what do you have access for where's my password one place to go your principal might have your school password the other place to go is to your rep that's listed here and they can make sure that you get what you need whether it's new stuff or figuring out what you have or had access to that that is a good place to go oops Miranda did you um and then just as we wrap up we really appreciate your feedback because then we can make it better for the next one you come to or for your colleagues for the next one we are having another webinar this week on Thursday for grade 1 and then grade 2 and grade 3 come up next week so we really appreciate that and you will be getting a follow-up email with a recording of this presentation but in the meantime we're gonna stick around for a bit so people have some questions you can put them just in the chat and we will answer them as we go and then for those that don't have any questions thank you for spending time with us we really appreciate it and we really appreciate the work you do with our youngest learners I am a kindergarten passionate I taught kindergarten for many years I've loved the last few years even in the ministry working with a lot of teacher teams in kindergarten it's I have a great passion for it and I just really appreciate the energy and the work you you do for your zoom cut us off at 100 registrants today so nothing like tech difficulties for most of our day but know that we will likely host another live webinar if Kim and Miranda don't mind somewhere in the next two weeks so we can catch up with the other hundred folks that weren't able to join us today that is not a problem we will make sure that we do that thank you and just for everyone still here I'm
