um so today we're going to be talking about echo pro which is our fsl program we have echo pro levels one two and three um and i'll talk about all the different levels and uh what they correspond to in the different provinces as far as grades are concerned so the first thing to let you know is these this list here these are the guiding principles upon which a gopro was developed so you can see certainly the program is action oriented and literacy based we have a whole lot of strategies embedded in the program in fact um you know that's one of the strongest foundations of this program is the focus on strategies there's a whole lot of cooperative learning that goes on in in the lessons and in the activities um the assessment and differentiation are at the forefront of of the work that our authors have done and certainly there's a an emphasis on cultural awareness and intercultural understanding so i do want to let you know now that we've sort of seen that list and have a bit of an understanding of what the program is based on this is also these are also the uh guiding principles for the cefr uh the common european framework of reference so um quite on purpose our authors have written this program to really match up and coordinate with the cefr so the program echopro one two and three it comes in three levels now here in ontario levels one two and three correspond to grades four five and six but in other provinces alberta bc it would correspond to different levels of five six seven maybe even six seven eight possibly depending on your students um i think what you would can i interrupt you for one second i apologize kelly yes um but for bc we do have correlations up on our website for what grades it does correspond to and yes it does go even up to grade nine um five six seven eight so it goes to eight so um you can get those correlations to your curriculum on our website and for alberta it is the same as ontario it's um four five six that's great thank you for that detail thank you sorry about that no i'm glad you jumped in please anytime barbara that's wonderful so um the program itself is based around these student modules there are five student modules at every level so what you see here these five covers that i'm showing you are from level one but of course there's five more modules in level two and five more again in level three so the student modules are available in print or in digital format for your students you can choose either one and then we also sell what we call the professional bundle so this is the teacher package so this professional bundle includes a print version of the program overview and the program overview is the pedagogy and background and foundation of the program it's how to teach you know french as a second language using eco pro the professional bundle also includes five print teacher guides so obviously they correspond with each of the student modules you do get one copy of each of these five student modules in print and then you also get what we call digital teacher access which means you get a login name and password that allows you to log in to our online component and i'll be showing you the online component the online component is a combination of the student modules with teacher guide material embedded right in it so it's everything you need in one account one login um following today's um session you will be receiving an email from our uh sales and marketing department that will give you actual purchasing prices and purchasing options the different ways that you can buy we weren't going to get into pricing too much today together because we want to spend the time actually showing you the resource itself so this chart here is taken from the ontario fsl curriculum document and this shows the evidence of all the things that can be clearly found embedded in the teaching notes so at the center of it all is the student and at this point at this level the goal here is to start thinking about creating a student that's interested in lifelong language learning so you have to start them on the road on the path and this is a great place to start so all of these things authentic oral communication an emphasis on the four strands listening reading writing and speaking um the development of the language learning strategies the strategies are super important in this program um the interconnectedness of language and culture uh the emphasis on critical and creative thinking goal setting and reflection you're going to find that um sort of self self reflection and self assessment comes up quite regularly throughout the modules and of course connections with the real world so here in blue on the top left is a quote taken again from the ontario curriculum document and it stresses the importance of teaching strategies in fsl and evidence of the strong strategy focus in eco pro is shown on this slide we've taken some examples from our student books from the student modules and we've put them here on the slide these are actual pages from the student material that really shows you um the the use of strategies production strategies uh so these are for when students are uh doing their you know their oral presentations and things like that or when they're communicating um comprehension strategies metacognitive strategies of course we mentioned that a minute ago and cooperative strategies working together jacob so this chart shows how clearly embedded the cefr framework is integrated into eco pro sorry um so on the left here you can see again these are the the foundations the guiding principles of the cefr and on the right you can see how they align with the guiding principles of a gopro so action oriented um focus on language the text that provide a focus for language learning and in our program we do have a variety of texts we have graphic text audio text multimedia electronic print you name it all types of varieties so this really does show you the interconnectedness so just have a few more slides to get through and i do want to spend just a minute or two talking about assessment so in the curriculum there is a metacognition expectation or outcome for each of the four learning strands so here i did i just pulled we pulled these out of the teacher guide these are little assessment as learning blurbs that would be shown in your teaching notes so here students are expected to identify the strategies that they used or that they found helpful and to set goals for future learning so here you can see we also give suggestions on which line masters which assessment masters you would use in the different tasks so here we're saying use fisht values and then we have assessment for learning so these are some examples again taken from the teacher guy from the teaching notes some examples of reminders for opportunities to do assessment for learning so learning checks are reminders to circulate and monitor how well the students are performing and we provide suggestions on how to adjust the lesson to provide either additional support for students or uh provide information on how to how to give extra challenge to students so all of these are examples of assessment for learning reminders that are in your teaching notes and then of course assessment of learning so here's an example of some of the reminders um and again just as a reminder um we do tell you which assessment tool to use um and sometimes there's more than one that's suggested so for you can see here for assessment of learning assess and evaluate the extent to which students can transcribe personal details onto a visual text so we're saying that you could use fish develop a so it depends on what you're doing with the class and how your students are doing okay so we're going to leave the slides at this point and we're going to i'm going to jump over to the website and i'm all logged in and ready to go i'll just take this moment to check in with barbara are there any questions that i should be showing or responding to at this point in the chat not not at this point thanks kelly we're up to date in the chat awesome thanks good okay so for today's demo or this evening's demo i'm going to be using eco pro 2 level 2 um but you should know that all the levels are set up in the same way um they use the same platform we call this the pearson etext platform if you're familiar with it in any of our other programs um so just very quickly what we've done is we've taken the student modules let me open the menu here the table of contents on the left now you can see a listing of all of the content that we've included in this ebook e-text so your five modules are listed here module so you can see all five student modules are included and i'm just going to scroll down through the table of contents and show you what else is included so we also have these um literacy titles booklets these are reading story books these are not student modules um it's literally a story in a book that you can share with your students they're meant for obviously reading independent reading or uh together with your class so there are four of them and we provide you two versions of every one so we provide you the regular version so here's the pasta and then we provide you the wordless version son text is also included so you can see two versions of libre and libre do la femi special libretto [Music] is a magazine echo mag so every level has a magazine as well and then again we're just continuing here in the table of contents we have the guide can i mention one thing at this point just because it makes sense i just want to mention though with what kelly's talking about with ali ray it's actually part of our our echo series which is echo literacy and it is available in print and those um do come in like big bags of a big plastic bag with uh the readers right in it um and so um those can be purchased in print but if you're and you don't also have to purchase them at all so they can be standalones if you don't have them and don't care to have them that is fine for the program you but having what um kelly is showing you now gives you the entire eco pro program with the added benefit of had having those literacy techs in a digital format sorry about that great thanks barbara thank you yep so they're included digitally here the getting started guide that's a folder that contains some help documents and some how to navigate documents and then most importantly the coin de la senia folder and the multimedia folder are here at the bottom so let me just start there i'm going to open these up i'll open up queen de la senya so here is your teacher's corner so this is where we've embedded the teacher material your lesson plans the program overview so let's start with the lesson plans i'll just we call them teaching notes here i'll just open it it's a pdf document that contains teach your teacher guide your your teaching notes for all of the modules and the literacy titles so let's open the first one and have a quick look and see how the teacher guide is organized so this is module one lagondav until the samuel and uh we're not going to read through this of course we're not going to look at every lesson but we're just going to scroll through and have a quick look so at the beginning there's a module overview so a big picture view of how this module is going to go um generally uh all the lessons we give you the outcomes and assessment plan for each of the lessons and activities and i'm just going to get past oh a bit of information here every uh module is terminated with the students by doing an action-oriented performance task so that's your uh end of module project i guess you could call it for the students so there's a bit of information up front here about that and how to set your students up from the get-go and let's just jump right down now to an actual teaching lesson plan sorry i'm trying not to scroll too quickly because i know that's sometimes disorienting so here we go lessons one two and three here at the beginning we'll be using student book pages two and three so you'll be spending three lessons using student book pages two and three so we give you the learning goal and the focus of each of the lessons shown here in this chart and then the actual lesson plan itself now as i show you these lesson plans you're going to look at that and say and you'll you'll notice that really we provide you step by step including the script of what to say in order to get through these lessons so we really do spell it out for you now of course we know that teachers are professionals and there's a really strong chance that you're going to look at this and say okay well i'm going to make this my own i'm going to read this and then i'm going to do bits and pieces of it and i'm going to adapt it for my situation and i'm going to skip this because i like to do that uh at another time and i'm you know you're going to make it your own the idea here is maybe the first year that you're teaching using this program you might rely on these teaching notes in a in a heavier way and you will do it word for word potentially but otherwise in your second and third and fourth year you'll be like yeah i'm gonna change this up and of course that's a good thing that's never a bad thing um so very quickly i do want to show you um each of the each of the lessons are divided into what we call the four-part uh gradual release of responsibility model now i don't know if you're already using that model in your teaching practice for fsl but in there's information about it in the program overview but in a nutshell it starts with modeling we we use the m to indicate modeling so that's where all the responsibility is with the teacher so the teacher is modeling for the students the language and the activity expectation and then it moves the next step is shared practice so now the responsibility is being shared between teachers and teacher and students and together you're sharing the practice the next step in the four part is the guided practice so that's where now the responsibility is moving towards the students and the students are doing the work the practic the language but with the teacher there as a guide and for support and help and then finally can i interact it this time yeah in a second sorry um you're mentioning before that um there's suggestions on how long um some of the lessons will take etc and there's a comment that has come in in the chat but i just wanted to um bring out uh for everybody to hear um because um the comment is around um with times like net right now with the um with covet and the pandemic some of the timelines yes they might be a little bit different than what we are suggesting they may take a little bit longer they may there might be more figuring out of how something can actually work in your class given the situation or you might be in a situation where you're digital and in person and you might have to work things out a little bit different so i wouldn't worry too much about how long things actually say um because you're gonna have to use some of that um flexibility around your lessons oh absolutely that's it yeah sorry i'm going and also going along with that um um some things say working in partners as well in the guide that i know is going to be a huge challenge for a lot of people and some things may or may not be able to be done in groups as we might be suggesting in that guide there might be other ways of figuring out how to do things in groups whether it's doing similar to like a zoom within your class or doing it on um like google hangouts or there might be just other ways of trying to get that partnership and collaboration to happen it's just going to take some time in figuring that out yeah absolutely as i've said before these programs were written a few years ago now before covid bc um clearly our author team had no even inkling that something like this was going to happen in our schools and in our world and so uh yeah you will notice that when you have a look at these lesson plans that yeah cooperative learning working in partners working in groups moving around the classroom getting up going to different corners of the class all of that really can't be done right now or it needs to be done with accommodations so uh don't look for actual help within these lesson plans because they were written a few years ago now so yeah it's just to that point kelly i was also and you can talk further about it but i was also going to just make the point that um you mentioned that there's five modules um for each level and um you're not going to get through all of it so if things do take longer then they take longer and you have choice if you don't want to do certain things and you do um but if you want to talk about that more i just want to say you're not going to get through absolutely every single thing absolutely yeah this uh the idea here is if you if you teach two modules out of the five you will cover the expectations uh in the curriculum so don't think that you're going to get through or that you need to get through all five modules we provide you these modules as some variety and some choice for you but you don't need to get through all five of them two is enough for covering the expectations okay so that is the teaching that's a quick look at the teaching notes we do i just i'll stop here for a quick minute and i just because i happen to be on a page that i can see there is a listening activity i can see this icon here that represents an audio file so this lesson comes with a listening activity and we provide you with the script right here in your teaching notes so uh if you need to or want to copy this and and project it or send it out to students who need extra support with their listening the script is here for you so let's leave these teacher notes now and go back to the student modules and uh just as a reminder all of this your line masters as well your line masters are here are all found in the teacher's corner actually before i leave this teacher's corner i will open up the line masters these are your worksheets for students so um you have the option of opening them up in word format which allows you to modify them of course you can type and make some changes into the word format and then you just save it to your own computer or if you scroll down a little bit you can decide to instead open them in the pdf format which means it's not modifiable you're going to use it exactly as we've presented it and again you save it to your computer you send this out to your students you can send it through google classroom or through email or however else you're sending files to students so these fish these worksheets are shareable with your students okay back to the e-text so let's have a quick look now at the actual student modules in a digital format so in this format it's pretty straightforward for turning the pages you simply use the arrow keys here on the left and the right to go forward and backward and as i scroll through the pages you can have a look at some of the content you do have an option to change the presentation a bit if you go up here under your settings and switch it over to two-page view so what that does now is it brings up the left and the right page together the spread so now this exactly mimics what is happening in your print books so if you're in a classroom situation where you're projecting this up on a screen and your students might have some print books on their desks then their pages look exactly the same as your pages that you're presenting if you're not in a classroom and you're doing this virtually then of course you can share these pages with your students by doing a screen share so in a live uh classroom situation live meaning what we're doing now like in a video class but unfortunately you have no way of sharing these pages to students outside of your class unless you purchase online access for your students so if you purchase only the teacher access then you can only show this to your students during class if you purchase digital student access licenses then they can log in on their own at home or in the library or wherever on the bus and they can log in and see this content as well otherwise with your teacher access you can just do screen sharing so on these pages we've embedded some content we've embedded some what we call media so here we are on the first pages two and three and i can see here on the left we have a listening activity we have a an audio icon so let me just have a quick play of this one separate different okay so this is an activity a listening activity now this is one of the strands which is listening and you would you would have distributed er so worksheet number one and the students would be listening and looking at their worksheet and checking off the right checkboxes according to whether it's the same or different so this is one example of the type of media that we've embedded on these pages as a listening activity let me just scroll through a few pages here we just have a few more things to show you we also have another type of audio file on these pages you can see here uh there's more there are more audio icons and this is this represent a read aloud of the text so all of this text on these pages we've recorded them and we've put them here in the audio player questions so this is really built-in support for students there's reading and listening and if students are struggling with the reading then of course they can listen along as well so wherever you see these icons on the pages that's a represented that those represent the read aloud of the text and then we have one more type of odd of multimedia i'm just going to use the menu here to scroll down and jump to this page here in fete alecal and show you that we have video embedded in these modules as well so this uh this page we're on page 1617 so that's quite a few lessons in to the module this is a video type um lesson um content so let me just play it now it was acting up for me earlier and it looks like it's acting up again my internet is not let's see if it'll play oh yeah here we go okay [Music] okay so i'll just pause it there we're not going to watch the whole video but you know these are five minute videos give it roughly your teacher guide will tell you exactly how to present and how to do this lesson um these videos were written by our author team and of course they were filmed in canadian classrooms with canadian teachers and students so all of that goes into the making of these resources so that's just a really quick overview of some of the content that we've embedded in these pages oh here now sorry i was just about to end but i realized oh let me explain this page so where where we have graphic stories we also include a wordless version so here we've landed on a wordless version of a graphic story and the next page has the original version with the words so as a teacher if you want to use this wordless version maybe you want to do a predicting activity maybe you want to do an activity where let's write our own speech bubbles now you can't type or do anything on these pages but you can project them and use them as inspiration um and class discussion and stuff um but quite frankly you could also just not use them at all the original print modules don't have the wordless versions they just have the word versions of these stories so you might decide let's just stick right to the story and skip those wordless pages um so there you go that's that's the e-text in a nutshell um i've shown you really the bulk of it which is the listening activities the read-aloud of the text the teaching notes and the line masters and the video that come with uh that come with every module your multimedia can also in addition to being found using these icons on the pages you can also find all the multimedia in the multimedia folder which is in your table of contents so i was just going to mention that um kelly um can you also show that the salt where the songs are oh sorry yep yep so every module also has a song um now i'm going to admit i'm not even sure what page the song is on in this module do you happen to know barbara in eco pro i don't but you can even just do the same by going to the left now i will that's exactly what i'll do yeah because i'm not sure which page unfortunately mine oh i can't open the multimedia because my my zoom menu is covering it up oh isn't this terrible uh let's see if i can move my zoom so oh there i can move it never mind okay we're in business we're in business so uh in the multimedia folder we have the listening activities the song and the video and the song here let me uh this there's songs for modules two three and five at this level so there is no song in module one we were looking at module one that's why i didn't know where it was so let me just you can play it from here [Music] so we won't listen to it all but that's an example of of how uh you can find one first of all in the multimedia folder or you can go to the actual page in the book where the song is presented so if anyone has questions at this point i might finish the sort of formal part of the presentation i'm happy to turn on people's microphones here if anybody wants to speak you can open up your own microphone let me just click on everyone's name uh you're more than welcome to continue using the chat if you like or you can just um turn on your microphone and ask any questions that's the way also if you would like to see something again that maybe we went over quickly um kelly's happy to go back and show you where something is if if you want to see how to find something um so the floor is now open you'll just have to um unmute yourself and then you are able to speak to it okay so linda i see that you've got your hand up so you can open your own microphone if you'd like um by hovering down towards the bottom and get the zoom there you go okay thanks um so i noticed that you have the pages where they're like the book you were saying so last week when i was doing this with um my kids in my blended class they weren't lined up so is that fixed for all the levels now or yeah that's a great question linda so in echopro 1 we are planning and but i'm keeping my fingers crossed to have that fixed for friday oh okay yeah we've been told that the engineers who build these for us um they've found a fix and they're going to promote the fix on friday the problem doesn't happen in eco 2 and that's what i'm showing you so the pages are working fine in echo pro 2 but unfortunately in echo pro 1 you're right they they're mismatched okay the other problem somebody else asked asked in the chat and i have answered it individually but since there are a number of vehicle pro users um i will mention it because it's another issue that we are having which is with the audio boxes that you cannot move them yeah um that was we'll be able to move them that fit that fit should also happen either tomorrow or early next week um oh sorry tomorrow i keep thinking that today's thursday my apologies so either by friday or early next week those audio boxes you should be able to move out of your way and where you need them based on the text yeah and in the end if if it's not fixed on friday i don't mean to sound uh like i don't trust our engineering group but um honestly we've tried a few fixes already and so we'll see what happens but if it's not fixed by friday do know that we are continuing to work on it we're not going to leave it um broken i guess we can say so we are continuing thank you yeah and your questions i don't see any in the chat but feel free to unmute yourself and ask your question um i had a question um about the the topics um so are there specific uh themes that are talked about or uh addressed in each of the different levels yeah yes this is amanda i'm assuming i'm just looking at the microphones the list here um yes absolutely so um probably the best thing i could do if if this interests you is i can um set you up with a um short term login a 60 day account where you can log in and actually look at the topics and see if it's what you're looking for yeah so in alberta we have uh specific subjects that we're supposed to cover for each of the grade levels so grade four is like the classroom and grade five is first yeah grade five is family and then grade six is more like um food and things like that right so yeah i i would need to know which level addresses the themes that we're supposed to cover before deciding yeah absolutely i know that's a so amanda let me put um okay i think you're seeing the word document that i had up earlier i'm just going to type my oh actually silly me oh so sorry i don't know why i didn't think of that uh let's keep talking you can keep talking i'm gonna put your i'll put it in okay and i'm also gonna put it here in the uh so um just so everybody knows my role here at pearson is to support teachers who are using digital so please feel free to reach out to me anytime if you have questions either before you purchase or after you've purchased and you might need some help so this is my job so i'm happy to help and i'm happy to set anybody up with a short term login if you want to give this a test drive and have a look at the content that's the best way to decide whether it's going to be suitable is to try it out so please send me an email and i will happily set you up i've also added my email into the chat if anyone wants to contact me um i'm barbara melodick and i'm the marketing manager uh for fsl in canada k to 12. that's great kelly would they be willing to do that for the student access as well i've only just started teaching at what they're calling blended class here in bc in surrey anyway um they had a different teacher before christmas and i've um they switched our schedules around so i've now taken over this grade 567 blended class yeah so um i put a package together of the books to to send home with the kids but only two of them have picked them up out of 18. oh boy so yeah and that's kind of the challenge with these kids who aren't choosing to be at home their parents have chosen um is the engagement piece so because when we when i introduced this to them two weeks ago um i was flipping through and of course the picture the little text or the audio box was right in the middle yeah yeah the dictionary that we were trying to go over and i was like okay well um but i i wondered if like having access to that because i already wrote down to talk to lily about if this district would even provide that um do a trial digital student license for the kids for like i don't know so that's not something we actually do um and the reason is because we have the student licenses are for one year and they're eleven dollars um our our our trials are like we can do a 60-day trial but um it's really only eleven dollars per student which is a very big difference for when you're looking at the uh teacher um uh professional bundle which is 550 so that's how we make that 60 day available so that you can try it out and you're purchasing it not for one year you're purchasing it based on you know five years and plus down the road um so we really don't for the students do anything like that um they're so affordable to begin with that yeah you do want to just give it a try with a few students um you could just buy a few licenses for 11 each well i have 18 kids in one class like it's a it's one class of grade five six sevens yeah okay eighteen kids in the class that siri already has a coupo level one so i have access to all the digital stuff for the teacher stuff i just thought you know if i can't get these kids picking up books from the school then at least um when i'm not because i only i only see them once a week then i could actually you know have them be working on it when they're not with me yeah so um shoot me an email linda and we'll talk about it and i'll and barbara as well um we're in a tough situation here because the students you've purchased books for them um it sounds like you have anyway so yeah let's take that offline if it's possible and we'll discuss it separately i just want to make sure that there's other questions here that we can get to them um and then we can talk with you about about what if there's anything we can do okay thank you the the other thing that i wanted to mention is that we do have on our sites and documents now i think you're in a very special case uh linda but um i i think we do have some documents if you are teaching split classes in your case where you're teaching three split classes it i i don't know if it will really help too much um but we do have documents of how to teach for two grades and actually um i do want to just address linda if you're still uh listening if you're still on the line here um the the audio player that opens up right in the middle of the screen i do want to just quickly show you that you can i'm you've probably figured this out already but if i let me just get here okay so you can see how the audio player is blocking potential text that needs to be read so you can if you zoom in by using the zoom um here on the pages you can now scroll the page so the audio player doesn't move oh okay we're working on fixing that of course but the page itself can move so it's it's a it's not great but it's better than nothing okay and it's helpful in the meantime to know that you can still get it out of the way even though it's clunky yeah yeah for sure okay thank you okay so any other questions oh i just see um amanda you have to leave early oh thank you very much for joining us okay so let's how about we leave it there i don't see anybody else opening up their microphones to speak so um you do have my email address and you have barbara's email address now in the chat so if you need to reach out to us please do anytime and thank you so much for joining tonight giving up your very precious time uh good luck with the teaching we know it's not ideal at the moment we're just uh everybody's just barely hanging on we know us too um so good luck and thank you that's it can i mention just one last thing oh yeah but just to finish up but i just wanted to remind um for anyone who isn't currently using it and for anyone who still is you will be getting um an email from our sales department um by the end of the week and you will have in there either links to correlations or price lists and more information so if you are planning to purchase or need more information regardless you'll get that and if you still have more questions even after that email always feel free to contact kelly or myself excellent have a good night everybody bye bye thanks for joining us
